How is it that a restaurant that only does chicken strips has been rapidly expanding all over the United States and even into the Middle East? (Raising Cane's) And how did the person who came up with this multi-million dollar business get started when he had no money, and no funding? (Todd Graves) Well, it involves risking his life in Alaska to catch salmon, and trying to prove his business professor wrong who told him the business idea would never work. This is the crazy underdog business success story of Raising Cane’s fast food company, and how the entrepreneurial CEO of Raising Cane’s made so much money from selling chicken fingers (despite competitors who already had the same product, and lots more funding). Well, it all begins with a guy named Todd Graves and a dream of opening his own restaurant, and a business class at university where Todd’s business professor told him his business plan would never work. In fact, the banks said the same thing - Todd couldn’t get credit / investments / venture capital to fund his business enterprise, so he realized he’d have to earn the money himself…

Former Canes employee and avid chicken enjoyer here. You really can't do this story proper justice. Todd has a simple menu that doesn't change and it absolutely works. I worked at McDonalds before Canes and the difference is night and day. When I worked for McDonalds I used to dread going in to work, but at Canes I was always happy to go to work. My coworkers were great, customers were always friendly and the food is just amazing. And the location I worked at was across the street from a Slims Chicken and right next to a KFC lol

I used to work for Canes, absolutely loved it and their whole motto. Coming from design school, I’ve always been obsessed with branding and making something without making too much waste. In and Out does this. Everything will be used eventually. Unlike Jacks or McDs where some may not buy a certain item so it gets wasted. Blizzard also USED to do this by releasing ONE insanely quality game every 3 or 4 years. Raising Canes follows this same method and it is BRILLIANT. Learn to work smarter my friends, not harder. While his professor and bankers criticized the idea of a simple menu, I feel like it's the best choice. Having a huge menu with variety can make too many things to choose from, and make it harder for a restaurant to specialize in one thing, and wait times longer (since people have to look through the whole menu instead of picking from the few choices you have). He was too smart for those people. Plus, Cane's is super tasty.😁

I still remember the first time somebody took me there and I remember thinking how could a restaurant be so successful. Only selling one item like that item must be incredibly good and when I tried it, my favorite thing about their tenders is that they are juicy crispy and the sauce does a lot of heavy lifting. I love their fries. If you eat them fresh, they taste so good. Lightly salted and the bread roll they give you is so good. So I guess the food just speaks for itself but I did consider. I wonder if the sauce just carries the whole thing, but a lot of other places fry their tinders really hard or the meat is really dry. So I think Kane's just do a really good job

Interesting story to share. I've grown up in NE Ohio for 25 years and never heard of Raising Cane's my entire life. I ended up moving down to Kentucky and when I got down there, everybody at work was telling me about this chicken finger joint down the street from us. I have never heard of this at all and didn't end up going because I couldn't justify spending money on just chicken fingers, some fries, and a piece of garlic bread. My Fiancé at the time who also moved down with me kept getting told about how we had to try this place and raving on about good it was by her coworkers. We both finally tried it and oh my goodness.... I ended up moving back home to NE Ohio and we didn't have a Raising Canes here at the time. Whenever I spoke about my time in KY, I would always reference this chicken joint we had down there. We ended getting one south of Cleveland but it still a solid 40min drive away and I would tell people about good it was and if they were heading down that way to stop there and give a try. Over time, I would get people telling me they were driving 30+ minutes away JUST to go to Raising Canes and how worth it was. A year or so later (during the COVID time) and we finally got a Raising Canes opened up here in town. The week or so it opened, I remember coming down the road and seeing traffic blocked forever.... I thought it was an accident on the road, but nope, just a line of cars sitting in traffic just to get into the new Raising Canes on our busy street. I have since (been trying to) cut fast food from my diet in my older age, so I haven't been to our new establishment, but I always tell people to try it and I always see my coworkers ordering it and there is almost always a line in our main street trying to get to the drive through. If anyone has not had the pleasure of eating at a Raising Canes, 10/10 would recommend. It really is a other world compared to how drastically KFC has fallen in years. I don't even eat there and would recommend that over any other fast food joint in the area.

I love Raising Cane's as much as anyone however, I believe that Zaxby's and especially Guthrie's would dispute the assertion that his was an original idea. There is an obvious reason that there is only one Cane's outlet in the state of Georgia. In fact, the Cane's restaurant in Georgia is in the old location of Guthrie's Chicken Fingers and the corporate headquarters for Zaxby's is in the same town. Guthrie's started back in the 1950's and Zaxby's in the early 1990's by two guys who grew up eating at Guthrie's. While Zaxby's, which originally started out as Zax and did have chicken wings as well, eventually expanded their menu to include salads and sandwiches, Guthrie's did the same as Cane's and only served the one menu item. FYI, they all have the same dipping sauce for the chicken. Ultimately, I do feel as though Cane's provides the superior product of the three although the idea is far from original. I had even heard it rumored that Tod Graves may have worked at Guthrie's as a fry cook for a brief period although that I do not know this to be fact.
