A lot of people don't understand the significance of this win by Chris. He was the first to ever qualify for the WSOP via an online tournament. This win literally CATAPULTED poker into the mainstream. Online poker quickly went 10x, then 100x from where it was. Still gives me chills watching nearly 20 years later...What a win
without a doubt the most important player of all time. he was on hustler casino live last week and he was a blast to watch. made some plays, mixed it up, made everyone laugh. every professional poker player, and every casino with a cardroom today owes him a debt of gratitude.
Celery - I live in a state that doesn't allow online poker (I know, land of the free my ass haha), so I'm only a multi-millionaire on PokerStars with "Play Money" lol.... but that doesn't mean I don't get tilted when losing the way you just described.... which seems like it ALWAYS happens!!!!
Such is poker a lot of variance and a lot of bad beats on each and every site what is important is how u react on it and if u keep on playing your a game or at least b game most of the time be disciplined u gon be a winner plus u have to put in volume a lot of volume actually esp in tournaments
Even though we've seen these clips numerous times, I still prefer these old school poker videos over todays stuff. Wish there were more 90's and 80's stuff out there.
Chris did get lucky a few times, but he also showed a lot of heart with some great bets. And it's great to watch big hands play out in 2 minutes instead of 10.
I think the only reason Farha didn’t call, was because he couldn’t be sure Chris hit the straight. He knew Chris didn’t hit the flush, but couldn’t be sure on the straight.
@@NickWuebker Actually, there was a second reason....he 'knew' he was the better MUCH MORE EXPERIENCED player and could outlast money, but he let it get him A LITTLE on tilt, was tired, and jammed his TP/GK into a weird 2 pair......that last hand was rough.
The golden era.. looking at the top 30 finish in this main event it’s insane to see the players: Farha, Harrington, David Grey, Ivey, Freddy Deeb, Marcel Luske, Scotty Nguyen, Lederer and Helmuth amongst others. Insane!
Not the best player by far. But every poker player owes him because he’s made players millions of dollars. Possibly the most important person in the history of poker.
the game has changed so remarkably. tournament poker used to be filled with characters. now it's filled with gto robots. the game has evolved crazily in the last 20 years, all because of chris moneymaker.
Skills are 100% necessary but to win a tournament with that many people you need to dodge so many bullets and run like a god…Moneymaker changed the poker world with this win and helped the game as a whole. Just like Tiger Wood. So many pro golfers hated that he won so many tournaments but his fame ultimately made golf a much bigger sport and everyone is forever getting paid way more.
Thats why you very rarely see someone make back 2 back final tables let alone win.... He also got in some advantages situations ie when he had the ace high flush draw and top pair vs chans k high flush draw and when he hit the a on the river vs Ivey full house now that was more lucky then anything but you get my point...
I honestly think it takes luck to get there...skill to win it all. The best players win the final tables...you need to get lucky to make it to that point. Having said that i still agree with the jist of what you're saying
Main event winners is a statistical improbability to win twice; considering everyone in the tournament are considered pros or semi-pros, it's not like you're up against half donks, half decent players.
Remember watching this when it was first on. Always love Chris Moneymaker. It was a tough beat for Ivey, though. I remember ESPN repeating it over and over again. Never tire of watching this.
Just look at the players field for every main event after his and the incredible jump of player and prizes. His 2.5 million for a few main events after would qualify at 7th place money for a while. He literally is the reason I started playing back then and to this day.
I never thought about it, but we can thank Chan for where poker is today. I never thought he would go with King high flush draw, and wheel draw. What happens to poker if he folds??
That's actually a very strong combo draw. I feel like a lot of players even today would go with it. Khi flush and straight draw with 2 to come for a full double up. Those are the kinds of flops you go with if you're trying to win the tourney and not just ladder up
@@seankiesling2054 - I mean playing it at all. Chan is known for playing snug. He always has. Obviously, he adjusts to his table, but he is known for playing on the tighter side.
@@alexbentley486 he did do something. He knocked out Phil Ivey. It’s not like he played the hand incorrectly. Anyone in his position would think they were good.
@@Monahandsom3 I agree - totally standard play by Chris. What, was he supposed to fold there? Haha. Getting lucky is all part of the game. Ivey knows that too.
One of my best friends from high-school has a cousin who was Moneymakers roommate and best friend from college. We went on vacation in florida and got to play online while talking to Chris on speakerphone. Hes such a cool, genuine guy. We kept laughing about how none of the other players online would believe he was actually Chris Moneymaker. They kept asking him questions they got from wikipedia or somewhere, thinking they were gonna prove he was lying. Once they started realizing they were actually playing against him, it got very entertaining. They were equal parts starstruck and terrified bc they were playing against him lol
poker is such a fascinating game. a character like Farha claimed to be an investor (lie), had a cigarette in his mouth (doesn't smoke), and is good enough at Pac-Man to take people's money.
@@rjtabit3912 Farha himself admitted some time after the 2003 tournament that he's not an investor, and only said as much to entice people to play poker with him. I'm not saying he's a bad guy, I just find it amusing that poker players can flat out lie about who they really are, and nobody bats an eye.. lol
The Ace of spades on the river against Ivey. First thing in my mind Motorhead - ace of spades "the only card i need is the ace of spades the ace of spades"
Funny how much Poker has changed from then till now. Norman Chad saying on the QQ board with Moneymaker having AQ that “you’d generally want to chase people out and bet big, and that with his small bet you’re almost begging for a call”. Uhh, yes of course you want a call! But Poker as I said was different back then. It was A LOT different in fact. Also, Moneymaker of course got lucky in some spots, but he also played pretty damn good. People might not understand the gravity of the situation. This was before Poker blew up, in fact, this very tournament and Moneymaker winning is WHY the Poker boom happened. Aka the “Moneymaker effect”. So back then, the idea of an amateur going up against a pro and not being destroyed was almost unheard of. My point is, here Moneymaker is, making these insane calls and bluffs against some of the greatest Poker players of that time period and not being afraid to do it. No matter how you want to look at it, he played great. And yes he got lucky, you HAVE to get lucky to win ANY poker tournament, let alone the main event! Anyway, man I miss the old days of Poker. Smh
Lesson learned to become a pro poker player. Go all in when you have third pair.... hit a 2 outer when behind and holdup when I’m ahead.. awesome strategy
@Short hair and straightners I couldn't agree more. You can spot them because they start spouting off GTO terminology. They always have to pose and take extra time agonizing if they should make the call with the nonsense they played. Then they lose and justify their ridiculous call because of blockers or some other garbage. Live poker has gotten easier if you're patient and play fundamental poker. Online is a clown show filled with bots and the any two cards crowd that the algorithms seems to favor.
Honestly, I think that's poor sportsmanship on Ivey's part. Chris did nothing wrong to deserve to be snubbed like that. I love Ivey, but that's disrespectful.
Ivey has no class, what a baby to not shake his hand, I've seen phil get lucky many times himself, it's called variance sht happens and when it does true colours are revealed.
@@Adamdidit Wasn't the Ivey hand a one outer? My point stands on how horribly he played, but the cards fell in his favor. Shoving QJ off preflop vs AQ suited and winning...poker gods were pulling for him.
@@Triguys1 the qj v aq wasn't shoved til after he hit the straight on the flop and the Ivey river was a,q, or 6. He had 7 outs. After Ivey stick around when he shouldn't have and then got even more lucky.
This is the best thing that ever happened to the game of poker. The best thing to ever happen for poker pros too. We need another 1 or 2 of these to boost the game again. It's starting to look an awful lot like chess...so enjoy your smaller prize pools, guys!
Casinos and 'poker pros' have ruined the game for a long time. The tournaments suck because there's no time clock to force action, guys sit for 10 minutes, motionless and then fold, then you have all these alleged pro's trying to tell everyone how there is SO much skill involved...ffs, there is no skill involved in playing Texas Hold Em. ZERO!
@@henrylowe3981 That's the point. Holdem is getting a lot more solved and boring. It's not the exciting wild wild west that it once was...not that long ago.
@@ghfjhloudz7607 I mean not sure if it was impressive or foolhardy. It was at minimum a 50/50 shot for his entire tournament life. The guy shoves with anything, pocket 4s and above. Most good players would have folded there.
I think people are bit unfair to Moneymaker, the last 20 years have seen so many entrants to the World Series that it's impossible to win the big one without luck and great cards, skill alone wont get you through 9,000 opponents.
True, but nobody's expecting him to win another main event. He got walked pretty badly when he sat with pros right after this tourney. Nobody can take away his victory here though, and who really cares what people have to say if you're winning.
Back in the days I was very happy to see him win… almost 20 years later and with a lot more knowledge off a lot of these pros I would have love to see Sammy win….
Even crazier to think about, Phil Ivey losing to the ace queen in such a good position, then only a couple years later going out first at a the ‘09 final table against ace queen again while having ace king😌 A lot has to come together to win a big poker tournament
