Cliff Burton is a legend of metal bass playing. He had great tone, chops and inspired a generation of bass players. But one thing that is often overlooked is his awesome approach to bass groove under the frenetic Metallica guitar riffs of James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett.
While many bass players would choose to double the guitar riff in a metal tune, Cliff opted to go for a less is more approach that makes for more warmth in the lowend, a tighter all round sound and a better groove.
In this lesson we'll look at how this is perfectly demonstrated in the song Damage Inc. from the Master Of Puppets album.

It's nice of you to recognize and show us how Cliff was able to give more groove to the music of those first Metallica albums.

I saw Metallica with Cliff around '83-84 ish opening for Ratt . Cliff blew my mind and by the time Ratt came out the poor bastards where anticlimactic. I likened it to going on after Hendrix or Zeppelin .

Cliff was the heart and soul of Metallica. After he died, Metallica was never the same. They gave into corporate rock-radio bs and are now a great example of self-parody. Master of Puppets was the last great Metallica album, and afaic, they've only gotten worse since then.

I mean they are doing the best they can. Try being in a band and stay together let alone continue to rock the world for decades. Cliff is my bass idol and of course they would never be the same after he died. You think it would be better they stop playing music? lol.

I'd have left it as "Metallica was never the same "

The thing is, while Cliff was an amazing piece of the classic Metallica lineup, he was highly influenced by jazz and classic rock ala Lynard Skinner. That said, he may very well have been okay with the Load era. Sadly, we'll never know.
