African American people were segregated out of safe pools when recreational swimming became popular in the 1920s & 30s, and again when it really took off in the 50s & 60s as a sport. At that time a lot of municipal pools got built - but African American people were not allowed to use them. Yes, segregation technically ended in the late 60s .. and then many white people fled to the suburbs, removing their tax dollars from those municipal pools and their upkeep, forcing the shuttering of thousands across the USA, which made the problem worse. eh you can get some great gigs...just be prepared to be on call 24/7...my advice...if you do with a big company that will want to milk you dry...stick with it and take advantage of every investment option they got.... pay off your loans or take off a nice chunk....and then jump ship to a small to medium size company....and try to negotiate hourly instead of Salary (depends on the work load/ and company size ) smaller companies tend to be more flexible, and tend to give you a bit more freedom, unfortunately the IT department is usually small
What really ticks me off is the parent salary doesn't mean that parents are going to help you... Them asking is predicated on the false idea that parents are obligated to help you.
It's obscene, the only times that you can enter 0 for the FASFA is if your parent is dead. If your parents are alive but what nothing to do with you, you still have to enter some amount of money. It's stupid, I still live with my parents, but they don't support my college.

Nor does high parent income actually mean they have money. Number of children, number of expensive family health issues, global economy (2008) all made it so our parents couldn't help despite their income being too high for fafsa.
Which is funny cause my parents made between 75k-100k and I wasnt eligible. Btw when you start to get to the 22% tax bracket... yea you end up making less than you think..

The scandal wasn't that they refused Asian students. It was that they were accepting students, specifically black ones, with significantly lower scores in place of Asian students in order to "promote diversity."

My local college was recently sued over discrimination off of race, they were actively turning down certain races to make a more “diverse” campus. They ended up settling and they still do it to this day.
@@lalabell2They have lots of asians because the international Chinese students make the college a ton of money with "out of state" tuition fees. Plus, asians perform so well in terms of grades, testing, and extracurriculars that the colleges have to accept a lot of them locally anyways. They'll still replace other asians and whites though with hispanics and African Americans if they can though.

You're missing the point which is that the standard for Asians is higher than other minorities. Even though you may be well enough qualified compared to class average, being Asian will make you disqualified unless you meet a ridiculously high level that other groups aren't required to meet.
i love when the SCOTUS basically said stop with the affirmative action admissions, but then Harvard sent a letter out to all the students basically saying they wont listen.
Programs such as these are definitely lazy attempts to elevate minorities, but in concept it's to help low income people, who are usually racial minorities, have a better shot at succeeding in life instead of wasting their skills in the lower class
@@verdantmischief7092 that's the concept, sure, but what ends up happening is many people who benefit from affirmative action gain admission to colleges they aren't academically able to handle, which means they perform poorly, struggle to keep up, and are isolated because they're in above their head. this deprives people who _could_ be performing and succeding at that level of the opportunity, *and* it leaves those who took advantage of Affirmative Action no better off; they didn't do well enough to continue, so they're out of that university, and they likely didn't gain any useful skills while there, so they're back to before going to college in the first place, but having wasted time, being stressed for weeks to months on end, and less motivation to continue in their endeavors.

@@Wyatt_Riley in an ideal world that would be the case-but these universities, as bastions of an educated society, have to deal with the ramifications of historical injustices that have made a meritocracy a socially inefficient system. If you look at it from an economic perspective, the externality to educating a person from a community that has been left behind (even if that person is “less qualified” than an alternative candidate from a prosperous community), the change in social welfare resulting from that increase in education is larger than it would have been otherwise. In theory, and in a perfect world, I’d completely agree with you-but the way to think about it is less about race and more about economic situation. Giving educational advantages to people in communities that have been left behind historically gives the opportunity for these policies to be revoked eventually, when the need for them has elapsed. I do take issue with the whole racial aspect of it-as a hispanic person at Yale, it’s hard to not look at myself as a “racial admit”-but from my experiences, I’m sure that’s not the case. Socioeconomic rifts often fall upon racial lines, so universities have found that to be an easy correlated variable to base admissions from. Is it imperfect? Of course. But is it blatantly racist and unnecessary? Not at all. There’s a lot more nuance to it than allegations of discrimination against certain communities, which is why these policies have been continuously upheld in courts, and why I support them as well.
Even worse in grad school, especially for foreign students. Our department takes in like 2-4 phd students from China each year and most of the time, half, if not all the quota is already taken by current undergrad/masters student before the application is even open. So no matter how qualified you are, you can end up going nowhere. Happened to my buddy last year, really sucks.

I still remember asking why and how my dead mother, and cancer ridden father who couldn’t hold a job anymore made enough money that I couldn’t qualify for financial aid. They refused to answer.
My father passed away from cancer my first semester of college. He was still working for the first part of the year. But when I filled out the FAFSA for the next year, I couldn't put that I had only one parent, but two incomes for the prior year. Because apparently people are either immortal in their world, or they stop working on December 31st before they die. So I had to lie about either having one parent or two incomes. Oh, and the expected family contribution went up that year. Because of course it would after losing a parent. It's not like he left a huge inheritance (if that would even matter) and his life insurance was pretty average as far as I know. The system is messed up.
So I’m Indian and I attended Cornell and until I was there, I didn’t really know what they meant when they said they were trying to promote diversity. Then I joined the ambassadors program… so the way it worked was that we would speak at these panels and so I always tried to volunteer for those to give info since I felt like giving back… this was my sophomore year before I got totally disillusioned. Anyways, so I was slated to speak at the diversity panel when I suddenly receive an email from one of our deans (all the deans were Caucasian… that’s relevant)- she goes “hey so I had to remove you because we only want minorities to speak at this panel and you aren’t a minority voice.” I emailed her back completely shocked and was like “hey but I’m Indian. I’m a minority… last I checked being Asian isn’t all that common in America” (okay so I’m paraphrasing bc I said it more formally but yeah). She informs me that “Asians don’t count as real diversity because we get enough of you as applicants and don’t need anymore”. That was the day I realized the entire system is beyond broken. And to take it out on one ethnic group… beyond crazy. Oh and also we don’t count as a protected minority at many schools so some profs used that opportunity to racially harass Asian students. Happened a lot at Cornell. My department was 60% Asian when I started. At graduation it was down to just 18%. Being Asian in college absolutely sucks!

My foster daughter, from Sri Lanka, made the mistake of marking her race as Asian on some of her college applications. I recommended she stop doing that, and include a picture with her applications. The rejections stopped. So dumb.

You’re probably better off than you realize if you think it would save you from that because even people who qualify for financial aid graduate with debt most of the time. Also, apply for scholarships and grants. There tons of money out there for students you just have to be willing to submit hella applications.
@@drw0 college isn’t mandatory for most jobs but his helpful for a many more especially if your job relies on a knowledge of history, population statistics, and the understanding of basic subjects. Medicine, engineering, research of all kinds, and even teaching to an extent should require an higher education than high school (how high is debatable but higher nonetheless) and to be fair so should policing but that’s a thought for another day.

I work at a college. This is pretty much it. We recently started holding separate graduation ceremonies for minority groups (including the "diversity demographic" I'm in). It's genuinely uncomfortable but the only thing that seems to matter to admins is data.

@@KFC431 Well, representation is diversity's biggest enemy. I'm ethnically half malaysian (though from singapore) born in Belgium and now I'm a med student. In belgium we work with entry exams and only the top 20-30 percent can enter medschool. I was one of them for the classes of 2021 and I can assure you, I could count the amount of non-white people with my right hand in my class, but I'm not complaining because again, it's representative. In a western country like the USA, majority in the classes are white, damn...what a shocker. I'm pretty sure they aren't "keeping" it majority white and actually, it's quite the opposite, they are trying to keep white people a minority in universities with these forced diversity acceptances.

My brothers and I are mixed so on our college applications my parents had us put "multi-racial" for everything. The mass panic of my mom running to my one brother's computer as he went to hit send after checking the Asian box has hilarious in the worse way!

What's upsetting is that affirmative action tends to hurt everyone. It takes in student's who aren't academically capable and allows them to get into schools they won't be able to do well in so they tend to dropout, and student's who fit a certain race and sex have to do even better than usual to get in. Actually the bigger problem is legacy students, they literally get in to college because of their parents or family connections. At least AAction student have to try, these people literally take the spots of more qualified students, but we don’t talk about bc their not minorities.

Once you go to college, your parents shouldn't be paying for your school. The school doesn't need to know how much my parents make. Just how much I make.
@Kerrie Wilson a lot of black people can’t swim because of generational consequences of racism: black people weren’t allowed in swimming pools with white people, and often had no access to pools at all, and so they didn’t learn how. People who have no experience with swimming are less likely to teach their children or bring them to swimming lessons. Its a good example of how none of this stuff is just “in the past” and affects people to this very day.
Honestly that's fighting the wrong fight. Most people are not underprivileged at university. So why fight it? It's like 5% and you know what that 5percent can have such a profound influence on lifting up a community and bringing possibly into their minds. But the truth is (and i know because I come from a rough background) the majority of these so called spot stealing minorities will never ever even date to dream of going to college. It's not the threat you think it is. Maybe this guy is just looking for an excuse.
America in general needs to get away from colleges, for post secondary education. Unless your profession requires it (doctors, law etc) most jobs shouldn’t even require a degree in the first place.
