How contests will improve your models and your hobby enjoyment. 

Just subscribed to your channel Chris, working my way back through the videos now and enjoying it a lot! I'm super-jealous of the number and size of the shows you guys have over there. Here in Australia we have fewer and much smaller shows, but they are definitely worthwhile attending! I've never entered a competition, but have taken part in a few club displays. The main benefit for me is the people. As you said, meeting like-minded folks and comparing notes on kits and techniques over a cold drink or a coffee and wandering around taking in all of the displays is priceless. New Subscriber - I too went to the Ottawa show and thought both the show and venue were great.

Entered my first ever contest this autumn. It’s a small local contest so not too intimidating. Glad I did it and I had more fun than a barrel of monkeys! 🙊

I've been building for 60+ years and model shows were always fun to attend. Looking at the builds and doing a little shopping for the stash ! The one thing that I found was when it came down to judging entries all to often the winners were members of the club putting on the show . If you were a loner who entered hoping that one day you could win an award, forget it. One year I entered a show just for the fun of it and it was a show I had never been to put on by multiple clubs. After all those years of entering shows my one model took 6 awards, Best in scale, Best engine, Best of show, Best paint, Peoples choice, and Judges best in show ! I saw others from those other shows standing there going " who is this guy ? ". Politics hurts young builders getting into the hobby and overlooks truly beautiful models built buy unknown builders that should have won. I still go for fun and chit chat, but judging has always been a debated subject by many modelers who are not in one of the " good old boys" club.

Not even half way through the video and I can point out two kits that were also at the model show in Hamilton last year. That Canadian Hornet with the Tim Hortons box in the cockpit, and that gorgeous Canadian Gripen (I am very biased on that subject) That was the first model show I've ever been to. Great place to find models for great deals. I got a 1/32 Hasegawa Stuka for $20 just cuz the guy had already started it.
