Broke my humerus bone at 51, (was doing a roll in on 7’ shallow end of the big bowl at my local) now at 52 I’m riding transition consistently again and prognosis is great for full recovery. The shoulder mobility was positively impacted by riding bowls and pump tracks especially in switch stance.
Wow, I really hope your ok! Felt that second slam, had many of those and all the weight on side like that sometimes knocks the wind out of me. Huge props though, you got back up and kept skating. Roll ins are tricky, I learned the way you where trying them, slowly stalling on the coping but using the nose to lift the back truck over. Then eventually adding a little speed to pop the back truck over with no stall or nose lift, if that makes sense. One things for sure though the roll in comes with the small price tag of a full body slam from time to time.
Bro I couldn't roll in until I got switch rocks, then it all clicked. Drop in, rock to fakie, then just get your back wheels over the coping and stay on your board. The wheels do most of the work. Stay wide stay low and stay on....
I was thinking that same thing. Go on a mini and do rock to fakie then fakie rock. It feels wierd at first but you are right, the wheels will do the work.
@@ericharmon7163 😎👍 I showed my 9 yr old that the board naturally wants to come back down.... go figure it had just enough to get over then just stopped... ghost stall 👻
@StevesSkateXplosion indoor is a good idea. Falling on wood instead of concrete does make a difference. First time I tried a roll in I went full speed commit at it. I flew like freaking superman down to the flat, 😆. Just keep your weight in the ramp on fakie rocks and you will roll right back in.
Dude! Those falls! I did the same thing and STILL feel it in my palm/wrist. You got it though! Your axle stalls are so good too. And the "potential thumbnails" are awesome. Stock thumbnails... Just sayin.
Bro I’m fricking dead after that. Definitely my worst slam ever. My whole body is aching. But I still went and skated today because I can’t be resting more than a couple days tops. You know! Skating calls us!
If you are wanting to learn how to roll in, then hanging up your back truck will likely result in a fall like you have. Rolling in is closer to a mini manual until your back truck is off then you lean forward. I felt that bail in my soul and I have done several of those learning to roll in myself.
It looks like you were trying to rock in rather than roll in. Not sure which is more difficult. Your slams are no joke. If you wanted to work into roll ins you can do a grind first from the deck and then roll in. Starting on smaller transition is a good idea as well.
Same here. 51 here, LDP longboarding. Been trying several times pumptracks... Resulted in ankle sprain, rib and shoulder concussion. Sticking to flat and carving too
I use my Burton snowboard hip pads. I started 6 years ago from a suggestion to improve my backward snowboarding. I'm not much but see my grin. I'm 82 now.
Buddy I just watched your videos... coolest old timer on RU-vid. 👍😎👍. Good stuff, I hope I can be like you, the smile alone is worth a broken bone or two... stay safe pad up and have fun
@@soberskater It is so fun. My high point, so far, perverse as it is, was going to the VA ER. When they asked and I explained the board flipped on some leaves at the bottom of a jump and broke the top of my foot, they called others in and asked me to explain it again. I was 80.
Hey man rolling in over coping is really hard. I’ve been skating for almost 39 years and I really don’t fool with it any more. It’s a good way to get a separated shoulder. If you want a safer way to get over coping after getting up on the deck try learning roll on 50 50’s. BTW the gym mat is really a great way to go to the hospital. Eventually it will pull the board out from under you and cause a gnarly slam. Of course you are allowed to do what ever you want. I suggest watching Skateboard Lessons with JB’s roll in video before you try these again. If you don’t bonk the wheels it isn’t a roll in it’s a Hang Up and at our age it’s a broken bone waiting to happen.
@@Steves_SkateXplosion This ain’t pickle ball! Never forget how dangerous this stuff is. I have mad respect for you getting out here and doing what you do. It takes balls to skateboard after 40 for sure. Just carving around a bowl is so rad!!! If you’re going to spend a bunch of money on this you should try the 187 pro pads or TSG Force 3 pads and practice bailing to knees in your sessions. I have the TSG and use old bones knee gaskets underneath.
The Andy Anderson shoes are so good . The flaps keep yer laces from getting burned up and they have ton armor to absorb impact. I only wish they made them in a full high top. That bowl is probably safer than those quarters since it’s so big you have more time to react.
i showed this dude who rolled up how to pop bearings out of wheels using the trucks cause he got new wheels, like 10 minutes later he got smoked and slammed on his wrist on a drop in
I went through the rediscovery phase in my 30's and slammed hard, had massive hemostasis on both hips for a year and eventually hung it up for a few year after fracturing my ankle. I got a motocross "girdle" and won't skate without it. You might wanna get one.
It all depends how fit you are. I still got got reflexes so when I fall I can minimize the impact. Just yesterday I had a similar slam in a mini ramp. I know wood does not hurt as much concret does. But the best thing to avoid mental blockades, is to try it again and make it. Otherwise the mental blocked grows and it is getting harder to over come the fear.
The first one where your back foot came off the board scared me, torque that knee a little bit the wrong way and it's game over for a bit....and those hand smacks are horrible...🤘💪
@@Steves_SkateXplosion you had it 2nd try if the mat wasn't in the way 100%... I'm scared of rolling in like that but I want to do it so bad so I'll be trying it real soon as well...💪
It’s really not that hard, but it requires perfect timing with the nose push to keep the trucks from hanging. I’ve done it a bunch on an indoor 2 foot ramp, but it’d been awhile and skating is so perishable. Not sure I trust myself to do a rock to fakie right now because it’s been a couple weeks.
Yaknow what's really nice? An Ollie to axle. You can do them just an inch high, kind of like slapping into the coping... or any height. Just smacking down on some metal coping... and it just sings. Ok. Really enjoying your videos.
DBC..Daily BLESSINGs Continue! Your Awesome Dude! I Really need to get Back to SKATEBOARDING but 110 degrees is too Hot Outside! Fall time and Winter! I know! Excuses!…. I’m a Lame. Your frickin AMAZING! ….HOPE YOU HEAL FAST! That fall was Bad. The Matt made it worse, I think!
Im 53 i need a hip replacement and have several herniated disks just a few weeks ago i got myself a santa cruz and thought hell i wanna skate again after a hiatus of 30yrs itll be just like it used to be lol 😂 after a slam on the qaurter pipe my hip is still painful ive just got pads !!! And its damn hard now i cant do anything any more
Do Switch Rock fakie first for warm up. Then try to roll in like you did. I'm 51 as well and I had never the need to fully gear up for a mini session. And I also advise you to try it first on smaller ramps Keep on shreeding
You’re exactly right. I was thinking the same thing. Fakie rocks and smaller ramps first. I had no business doing that but I was curious and curious got me.
very nice axle drop ins! And couple of hard slams... remains me of me too :) I think rolling in looked very good, even with the slams... there was one video that told that, treat rolling ins as they would be just rolling of the ledges, same way. Just hop into to emptiness, I guess normal standing position, a little Ollie maybe and after that just tilt your shoulder a bit into the transition...easy :) (ok, haven't tried that yet)....maybe a same kind of tip, than this "when you drop in into a 4' vert, one your trip down, vertical drop, remember to push your feet againts the vertical wall....yeah really this is a easy to execute anyways very good and early- bird video again from you!
Appreciate you connecting with me and your suggestions. I feel like I can get this but I’m going to have to work on a 2 foot first and maybe something a little less steep.
This goes right back to the dropping of a ledge into the bank, And you did that! Don’t go slow and put the middle of the board down. Roll up just like dropping of the ledge, front wheels go past the coping and you’re all lightweight and then when back wheels pass the coping you stop being lightweight, lean in and brace yourself for the curve.
When you next go for it, you should practice rolling up and out of the ramp again but try and do a nose manual even if just for a second and lift the tail up in one smooth motion. so your wheels dont hit the coping. Because thats basically what you have to do rolling down except you definitely wanna put the back wheels back down as soon as you get over the coping with them. Also I noticed on your first attempt that your front foot is too far back to be able to do this nose manual so you have to have it more forward. The one you got close on where you ran into the mat was close but your wheels still hit the coping and you want to avoid that since it'll startle you.
Hope that hand is alright man!! Seems a good idea but you either trip over the mat or miss it. It’s good for running bails tho, like you started with, to get over the fall fear and get a feel for it.
Be careful man and yes when you slam at our age it takes longer to heal so let's keep those back trucks off the copping, not sure how but I can see you certainly don't want them getting hung up, that's no bueno!
@@Steves_SkateXplosion Yeah hope you are okay that was a hard slam, you definitely need to make sure you are focused when riding! Just glad you’re good man!
Dude, I feel your pain, what a great idea with the pad! I don't think my hip is ever going to be the same again I have hit it so many times now. Looking so good on those axle stalls, keep it up!
Nice process! I laughed when the mat absolutely caused the fall. Good demonstration. And by the end of the video, you had it! If you have a pump track nearby, I highly recommend it, too! I'm 40 and have enjoyed the controlled progression on it. Your videos remind me of mine 😂 Hope I'm brave enough to try a ramp one day
@StevesSkateXplosion I snowboard but got into longboards 3 summers ago. I cruise flat ground, try to do dance, and ride pump tracks on shorter longboards. But now I'm so tempted to start learning street skate tricks, even if just a couple basic
I am at minute 3:35 with it paused laughing! I was thinking this man is going to make the roll in and then hit that mat and go flying, like hitting a pebble in the street.
Glad you survived that slam dude and great to see you pick yourself up and keep going. I broke my collar bone on a mini ramp last year so know how easily it can happen. P.s those stills at the end were genius.
@@Steves_SkateXplosion it was about 6 weeks in the sling and another couple to properly heal. Worst thing was not being able to drive the kids around and getting the bus to work! I think I just hit a stone and went straight down on my shoulder from the transition. I usually take a broom to the skatepark now but I also have a daughter with a gym pad! 🤔
Try doing a line now. You have enough. Try axel stall, kick turn or slash grind then rock to fakie. New challenge with skills you have. Feel that joy of skating. It's skills you have. But you have to put them together. Might help. The 1st roll in worked until the pad. Overthinking the pad perhaps. More thinking about the 1st go and why it works.
Pads are a necessity at our age or anybody just learning. Pads saved from me from breaking elbow and wrist (still broke my shoulder) but would of ended my skating permanently. In theory the gym mats might help but it appears to be more of a hinderance. Anyway can't wait to see your next deck set up
@@Steves_SkateXplosion oh man. do you need to get your hand checked out ? I have noticed your subscribers and views have been picking up. That's great and you have the best skate channel that the regular average skater can relate to while trying to learn .
Your entire approach is wrong. You're supposed to lift the front truck and speed bump the back truck off the coping and land close to the flat in order to maximize speed into the next obstacle. If that makes sense? And like everything else, if you do it correctly once your brains just shit out all the previous fear and you unlock a new accomplishment 😉 you got the skills and perseverance, now just do it already!!! And wheels under 56 hang up on coping more.
@@Steves_SkateXplosion 58 is perfect, I was thinking that maybe if you were rolling in with bearing cover sizes it would explain why you couldn't monster truck over the coping? And I know it's not comfortable but you also stand up instead of squat with your butt out for a lower sense of balance. It's all scary, that's why you have done what not everyone can accomplish anything you have been achieving. 👍👍
Steve. Thank you. This is so much work and your efforts show and encourage all of me. I look like the Michelin man at the park as you can see in my inset. And, notice the grin.
I automatically enjoy watching someone skate after watching them take a heavy slam and getting back up. Longtime watcher of the channel. You finally got my sub today 😂 keep it up boss
omg lmao the one where you hit the mat and slammed after vaulting over the mat was funny as hell. you couldnt have been funnier if you tried. going up on top of the deck and stalling in the 50. im having the hardest time with that. thats why i thought you would be ready to get a 50 50 grind. is that coping rusty or sticky for some other reason?
@@Steves_SkateXplosion i would. im one of people that over does sht but maybe hit it with some sand paper and make it shiny. shiny= smooth. but if you wax it and do some grinds that will sand it too just not as well
@@Steves_SkateXplosion yea man just been learning to carve/ link turns and do some rock fakies. Def want to shred them harder though once Im comfortable. I got a helmet, just looking for good knee pads that arnt to expensive.
