Those type of situations are always a bummer. You go to fix one thing, but something greater, unbeknownst to you, is going on, but you don't notice it until you're underway with repairs or after they're done. Just always hope the customer doesn't flip out on you and is understanding.

A combustion test or a leak-down test. The combustion test will show if there is hot exhaust going into the cooling system. The leak down will bubble in the coolant.
