Eye-opening read! It’s important to understand how credit affects our spending.

Credit cards got me in a right mess. 9 years later I'm still paying them off. Not far off now but I'll never be having one again.

I keep a credit card only as a backup to my direct debit card. A lot of people these day don't look at the total price of things bought on credit, they just look at the maximum amount of credit that they think they can afford to finance. "Free delivery" is also a tax on buyers. Nearly all my local takeaways have switched to home deliveries now. While their meal prices have nearly doubled.

This is an interesting video. It would be nice to have education at secondary schools of these matters to help young people so they don't fall into the trap of constant debt in later life. I have never had a credit card and don't want one. I know they can be good for an emergency if you pay straight back. I love my little suzki altro car that I bought on facebook. It runs really well and I'm happy. I'm happy with what I have, never interested in buy this sofa or new phone etc every year. I suppose we are all different.

I completely agree with everything you have said. However, credit reference agencies are completely bonkers. Some years ago I had a bad credit rating due to late payment of a water bill. Apparently I was informed that my poor credit rating proved that I couldn't be trusted with money. Around the same time I met a bloke who had just completed a four year prison sentence for armed bank robbery. I got him to check his credit rating and it was fine. Therefore according to the credit reference agencies an armed bank robber can be trusted with money. Absolutely astonishing.

A credit rating is only part of the decision whether somebody will be given credit .

Most people like to push you to make big purchases on credit, my eight year old MacBook needed replacement and the Apple Store point blank told me that if I can, try to buy my new MacBook outright otherwise I would be paying an extra one thousand pounds in just interest alone. I have never liked the idea of using credit cards.

Hi Claudia, I hope you are keeping well. As always another fascinating video. Gosh you really know your stuff. I love to watch you because its so informative and you explain things clearly. You and your frugal lifestyle absolutely fascinates me. I'v said this many times. I just wish along with many that we was more like you. Keeping it simple sounds easy but gosh its hard to change a habit of a life time, Keep up the good work. Is there any chance you would give your opinions or advice on the results of the election? It'll be really interesting. Have a great evening.

I keep a credit card for the odd occasion I need a purchase protected, give them nothing, pay it off in full every time. Additionally I drive an 18 year old diesel Fiesta that still runs like new, £35 tax and gets 55-60 mpg round the town even the air con still works! It's insanity buying a new car and pay interest while it's depreciating like a falling rock.

yes, use points, price guarantee, extended guarantee on purchases, free hire car insurance excess fees, pay it off before due date so the scumbag banks get nothing.

Exactly. I have two cards, I pay them off every month and only use them for normal spending. The credit limits mean if I had an emergency I could use them but I could still pay them back by the end of the month.

you are so knowledgeable . keep sharing your views etc especially on cost of living . we need more people like you to explain things simply . it used to be called higher purchase and indeed it has become normalised . people are becoming trapped now , so where is all the prof advice .

There's a reason Usury (credit) was banned in every Christian nation. These lessons were learned by our forefathers and best practice was codified into religion. Unfortunately we threw the bath out with the bathwater in our rush to Atheism.

Also, now the A.I. is authorizing if you get credit or not and how much. They like to give out small loans like credit cards, to keep everybody paying interest for ever and get late fees etc. They refuse to give out large loans to people over 50 unless you have assets to secure against it. Even then, the bots will not grant a large loan now because so many people default on the loans.

Monetary inflation (more money via more debt) = more price inflation because there are more monetary units to bid up the price (e.g. when you could only get a mortgage on 3x one salary house prices were much cheaper than the 4x two salaries they are now). This is financialisation of the economy in action, the only winners long term are the people making the loans. The reason this didn't happen in the past is because we were on a gold standard and then fixed exchange rates and then heavy loan regulation. It is a failure of democracy, people want more so the government ends up running the economy on debt and inflation rather than saving and investment. Then the debt is so high everything will collapse into deflation without zero interest rates, qe and even more government deficit spending. Beware politicians and activists calling this process 'capitalism'. The most free market of economists want to regulate against monetary inflation. Problem is people will always vote for more now at the expense of the future.

Our Family believes if you don't have the money you cannot have it . Sometimes with extremely expensive things like a car you have to pay on finance but it is silly in my opinion to get into debt over a nice phone or some posh jewellery these are nice to haves but if you want them save. Some have buying addictions especially people who like shoes, clothes and even model Trains, Planes, Cars. You have one and you want them all. On reddit someone liked buying model aircraft and they was never satisfied because there was always something else to get. I felt sad for them because they cannot enjoy the beautiful models they have which are high quality and very expensive costing £50 to 100s of pounds. Sometimes it is just a mindset issue.

They couldn't come to me. I don't have the room to accommodate anyone. We'd have to go out but I don't know where. I guess it would be a family friendly pub somewhere.

@@workinprogresssince1974 that is the problem I sadly have .thankfully it has only been twice I the past 7yrs because I do visit my family regularly. But my anxiety hit a all time high they came to mine to pick me up and use the bathroom because their check in at the B*B wasn't until after 3pm .I felt obliged to offer them a cuppa before we heading out .My sister and brother in law sat in the sofa I sat on a foot stool and my nice and nephew sat in the floor but I felt so closed in and overwhelmed because my lounge is so small you can't swing a cat with just me let alone anyone else .yet my kitchen is huge but there is no seating apart from a table and one chair.
