Even as far back as 1946, Ernest Bevin, the British Foreign Secretary, wrote in a secret memo to his Cabinet colleagues with regard to developing Cyprus as a British base: '' ... our whole policy towards Cyprus will have to be reviewed, for we have starved the Cypriots, treated them very badly, and must mend our ways.'' But they never did mend their ways. Just 8 years later in the House of Commons the Colonial Minister, Henry Hopkinson, would bluntly declare that geostrategic colonies such as Cyprus could “never expect to be fully independent”. The modern history of the indigenous people of Cyprus has been one of disenfranchisement by the imperial powers of Britain and Turkey. And it continues to this day.

Let’s see if this one follows the typical pattern… 1. Old colonial issue reaches peak after WWII 2. Extended, dirty conflict commences, involving colonial power, local forces, some massacres, some communists and/or some US backing 3. Conflict “ends” in some combination of unhappy partition/stalemate/foreign domination/cruel and ineffectual government 4. Conflict remains cold but unresolved to the present day Yep, it checks the boxes.

Georgios Grivas was the II Division's chief of staff during the Greco-Italian War and it's said that due to the divisional GOC Maj. Gen. Georgios Lavdas' advanced age, Col. Grivas was the mastermind behind the successful operations of the division in Albania
@akisipoculturespath8290
@akisipoculturespath8290 3 года назад
Well,that's a rumor my friend. What is true 100% is that Grivas was the chief in command of the organization "X",an organization that during the occupation of Greece from the Germans (1942-1944) was fighting in the name of Hitler,armed from Hitler and the members of this organization were fanatically anti communists. Grivas collaborated with the occupation forces and tried to kil with every possible way the resistance that true patriots were striving for. Unfortunately in Greece,after the German retreat there was a civil war that the Greek collaborators with Nazi Germany won with the help of Britain and usa.That made Greece a unique example in post WW2 history.We had civil war after WW2 and the Nazi collaborators where never trialed or jailed.For what is even worse,the true resistance leaders where killed,jailed or exiled. Returning back to Grivas,it was becoming clear that he was,sooner or later,going to be caught from true patriots and executed,so the post civil war far right government sent him in Cyprus to create a resistance movement(which was highly anticipated in colonized Cyprus for many reasons) and he formed EOKA.
@apmoy70
@apmoy70 3 года назад
@@akisipoculturespath8290 It's neither rumour nor hearsay that Grivas was a competent officer in the war with Italy. On the other hand you have it all wrong, you confuse X with the "Unknown Division" the organisation Grivas abandoned, protesting for their open pro-German stance. X were an anti-communist organisation firstly and foremostly, and according to modern historians (Fleischer, Richter) although X were one of the eight resistance organisations that had signed the pact with the Middle East Allied Command and the Greek government in exile, they did not participate in the struggle against the occupiers, but waited for the German withdrawal for a final confrontation with EAM and the communists. X were monarchists and anti-communists more than anti-German
@akisipoculturespath8290
@akisipoculturespath8290 3 года назад
@@apmoy70 I didn't mean that is a rumor the participation of Grivas in the Albanian front.I said that is a rumor that he was the mastermind behind the win in the Greco-Italian war. He was the leader of X organization from the day it was formed.Of course,as I mentioned,he didn't participate in the resistance of German occupation because their oath swear oath to Hitler(you can search the oath of X). In the times of the retreat of the Germans because the fighting was escalating between the resistance and the occupiers,he accepted that his troops would be armed from the Germans in order to reduce the german casualties and replace them with Greek traitors.We called them Germanotsoliades. You can read the Grivas Life written by a friend of his while he was alive. He says everything there,he admits everything (without torture ;))
@apmoy70
@apmoy70 3 года назад
@@akisipoculturespath8290 Nowhere in the organisational pledge, Hitler is ever mentioned once (the pledge of Organisation X): "I Believe -In a Great, Glorious, Free and Blissful Greece. -In the regime our forefathers bestowed on us, under which we thrived, and which respects: Individual Freedom, and the traditions of the love for the Fatherland, Religion and Family. For that, I'm against Communism which: -Represents a different version of Fascism and Criminal violance. Is in a state of denial of the concept of the Fatherland, and its members are instruments of foreign goals that oppose national interests. I Believe -In Social Justice based not on the struggle of classes or the conflict between capitalists and workers, but in the harmonious co-operation between them. -In the Political System of Constitutional Monarchy which fits well with our national character and traditions, serves better our national interests and constitutes a berm against Communism." Again, you have a mush in your head, X were not Security Battalions. Organisation X was a pro-monarchy, staunch anti-communist resistance group, which although was a signatory of the pact between the British, the 8 major Greek resistance groups, and the Greek government in exile, in reality lurked in the shadows during the occupation, gathering members, money and weapons for a confrontation against the EAM and the communists. You have confused X's activities during the Civil War with the X during the occupation. Two completely different organisations.

@@akisipoculturespath8290 i think you are confusing " x " with" security battalions" that did took oaths to " the supreme commander of German forces " ( Hitler) being part of the local SS police The x was notorious and in did they mostly care about the aftermath of ww2 but they was mostly the " long hand " of the government in exile than axis collaborators Basically it was the equivalent of " OPLA" with everything that means. The period of the German occupation is a very complicated one , for example did you knew that " city police" was working with ELAS? while the " mechanised" one was openly pro nazi? Or did you knew that EDES has disowned EDES of Athens for collaborating with the enemy? Things aren't always straight forward white or black..

2:20 I have to disagree that Cyprus was handed over by the Ottomans to the British Crown. What really happened is, that the Ottomans allowed the British to build up a military fort there and receive rent for it. It was not formally handed over. With the start of WWI the British forces annexed it by force. That's when the UK started formally owning the island, not before.

My assumption is that the majority of the world haven't even heard about Cyprus all this time despite its issue being very serious and tragic. Recently it became a hot topic again because of Turkey's provocations in the island's EEZ and the illegal re-opening of the Greek Cypriot city of Varosha (Famagusta) by Turks. So I wouldn't be surprised if many people around the world started getting curious about the country after that, asking their selves ''why is Cyprus in this position and how it got there?'' and researching for answers, many of whom, youtubers.

Back in 1878 the Greek-cypriots were the overwhelming majority of the inhabitants of the island! Turkish Intervention is a better explanation. Turkey reacted to the coup d'état of Greek Junta Regime in Cyprus trying to incorporate the island with Greece. As the guarantor of Republic of Cyprus Turkey acted to stop the annexation of the island. Which succeeded in its objective. If it was just a mere invasion Turkey would have seen punitive results for it. (Like it is seeing for comparatively much lighter actions now). Which it didn't. Greece left NATO military command as a protest to NATO letting Turkey intervene on the annexation while Turkey was on full military embargo by NATO. Fun fact Cyprus's independence is actually guaranteed by both Turkey and UK but UK was hesitant on intervention. So Turkey did her part to her guarantee of Republic of Cyprus's independence alone.

@@yenimlt44 there shouldn't be any presence of Turks in the island of Cyprus anyway! The Turks are not indigenous to this island! They settled in the Cyprus for the first time in 1571, after the Ottoman Turks militarily invaded - with a massive army - Cyprus, slaughtering thousands of Greeks and usurping their lands and properties! And it is a cheap excuse to say that Turkey militarily invaded Cyprus - slaughtering once more thousands of Greek cypriots - simply because Greece was considering annexing Cyprus! The Turks were planning to militarily invade Cyprus and occupy it long before! They were just waiting for a good pretext! In any case the Turkish military invasion and occupation of the northern Cyprus is illegal by the international law and that's the reason no country in the entire world is recognizing today the "Turkish Republic of North Cyprus" - but Turkey itself! Brute force and violence should not always trample what is considered just and fair (although that seems to be the Turkish dogma, ever since this people descended - as a Turkic people - from the Altay mongolian plateau and militarily occupied the Greek-Byzantine, Armenian, Kurdish lands they are living in today...)

@@ThomasGazis It is easy to use nationalistic exaggerations like you do. Turkey can never, ever occupy Cyprus in foreseeable future. Cypriot Turks settled in 1751 doesn't make them alien to the island. Do you realize how many generations does it make? They have little to no connections to Turkey before the foundation of N. Cyprus Republic. I agree that Turkey should leave the island but not because island is owned by Greek Cypriots or Cypriot Turks. Cyprus is all Cypriots' island. And whether you and I like it or not both sides of Cyprus are allies of Turkey. And add, you shouldn't be so racist about Turks. You can't make the ancestors of a people as an excuse for treating them bad. I do realize N. Cyprus' independence is lessening in the rule of an autocrat these days but this doesn't mean it will continue this way. Whether todays government likes it or not Cyprus is long for reunification. N. Cyprus' people always says it out loud. Since they are a member of EU now, there are no possibility of annexation of Cyrus by any country left. So I do agree that Turkish guarantee has got expended by this point as long as the international community and the locals of the island stop looking their own people with racist ways like you did. Cypriot Turks didn't descend to the island from Altai Mountains, they are locals of the island by this time.
