How dangerous are microplastics and how often do people ingest them?

A large amount of human-produced plastic waste degrades into microplastics: small particles that linger in the environment and can be consumed by animals and people. Microplastics spread through water, air, and even the human bloodstream. Matthew Campen, director of the University of New Mexico's Center for Metals in Biology and Medicine, joins CBS News to explain the possible health risks from microplastic exposure.

Remember that a big source of plastics is clothing. Polyester, nylon - these are plastics. Rayon/viscose isn't - it is cellulose (but one of the processes used to make rayon uses carbon disulfide, which is hazardous to workers and ppl near the factories). I volunteered at a cat shelter and was dismayed that they used a lot of polyester fleece for bedding and in order to cut down on disease transmission, they used bleach and hot water to wash. This probably generates a lot of microplastic particles. Cats love fleece, but they also love cotton terry and flannel. At home I now use a cotton beach towel as a throw. It looks nice and my cat likes to snuggle on it.

Better yet, tax it to reduce consumption gradually. Put a tax on the production of each different type of plastic and slowly raise the tax rates in order to reduce production. You might, for example, reduce it by 30% over a 10 year period, making an adjustment to the tax every month so as to regulate the rate at which production declines. The would cause a lot of material substitution, with glass, metals, paper, wood, ceramics, natural fibers and untaxed biodegradable plastics taking the place of the usual materials. I believe production could be reduced by 80% without much economic disruption if it were done in a gradual manner.

Once we're intelligent & organized enough as a species to take a step back then it's proven that our footprint on Earth will disappear naturally over time, just as theirs did. Or if we're not heading to that direction then they will be the ones to cause that doomday, but we will never be able to directly or indirectly cause the doomday when something that capable is in our air.

Buy more metal products, cotton, wool, silk, wood, rock, insted of plastic in everything. I bought myself a stainless steel food box and trashed my plastic food box. Dont use single use plastic if you dont need to! Plastic dust from clothing, couch if made of plastic like polyester fabric which most couches are, and other sources contribute a lot also i guess because you are around it all day!

Is it actually possible that there could be a plastic spoon's amount of plastic in the brain? That is a frightening thought.

So they wanted things to be biodegradable/decomposable…they said glass containers were bad they said paper and cardboard were bad, they said old fashioned plastic containers were bad bc they didn’t degrade, so science invented plastic containers that do break down…now those are bad too… metal and glass containers contain lead and chemicals so those are bad, paper and cardboard are bad bc of the impact on trees and forests and deforestation etcetera…at this rate we will have to go back to pottery and ceramics, but then someone will say those are bad too. Make up your minds people.

Is it possible that the problem is the supply doesn't meet demand? Planet can't sustain this many people.

Ummm, I hate to break it to humanity, but plastic is in EVERYTHING. I mean everything. Food, water, clothing, your body, carpets, the air, your girlfriend... all of it.

It's incredible that dinosaurs went extinct so long ago yet drilling for oil the remains of the dinosaurs and fauna of that time and using it for fuel and creating plastics is contributing to the slow yet inevitable extinction of humans so many years later.

People need to stop thinking they can keep buying plastic and recycling it. Plastic consumption needs to be reduced as much as possible.
