The swivel knife is the foundation tool that sets up your entire pattern. Running smooth cuts and fading them out all stems from starting the cut at the correct depth. In this video we cover some fundamentals for setting you up with good swivel knife cuts starting with how deep to start your cut.
For a detailed breakdown of all the fundamental tools I use in floral carving, all in one place, I encourage you to check out the online course “Fundamentals of Floral Carving” at the link below:

Never thought about how the top of the bevel of the swivel blade could be a measuring tool. What a great tip! thanks!

Thanks for this! Do you have tips for good line work when a design changes direction? I’m trying a simple Celtic knot that has a lot of regular sharp-ish angles. Should I still fade the ends of each line before the turn? Any tips on getting clean corners? Thanks!

Another great informative video. Have hit the subscription button! Question, when stamping leather using some of the stamping tools is it normal for the tool to put small "dents" into the surface of the maul? I have a very good quality maul but was very surprised when I did a few test stamps on some scrap leather (was using a craftool beveller) to see that the head of the stamping tool had left quite large dents into the head of my brand new BK maul. Is that normal?
