So basically, the Order of the Bath was created because Empress Matilda’s hated husband, Geoffrey of Anjou, was a filthy teenager who stank and no one would knight him until he bathed. “No really, Geoff. It’s just part of the ceremony. Don’t forget the soap.” 😂
@ReadingthePast

I hadn’t thought of it that way… but now you mention it…

Reading the title, i expected to hear about the Wash, the estuary of the Fens. Being from the US, I confess I knew of that area from D. L. Sayers' Lord Peter Whimsey 'The Nine Tailors'. But of course, you have gone with the more universal experience! Thank you again for your wonderful videos.

As said in Robert Burns poem “The best-laid schemes O' mice an' men/Gang aft agley,” the poet writes(lie,often go away)” is about inevitable failures of humanity. The act of accession and elevation of titles points to the fragility of even the best laid plans often go afoul; the results of events beyond their controls. Honor and civility are attainable through personal disciplines and distorted by the same. Life throughout the ages is an allusion where we plan for the best but are not surprised when it brings out the worst.

Yes, please, more! This is a perfect way of explaining all of this to my husband. That said - There are other "ceremonies" that "change" one (allegedly, hopefully) profoundly, in their outlook on life, and behavior. Baptism (as an adult), Confirmation, becoming part of DeMolay, a Mason, even the US Girl Scouts has ceremonies. I distinctly recall the one we did moving from "Brownie" to "Junior" Girl Scout levels; you crossed a small bridge, with a mirror placed under it to be the "water" you pass as you "bridge", and we tossed our old Brownie hat into the mirror abyss and crossed to the other side as a Junior. There we tears. It meant something to us. Funny how decades later we can talk about it and realize it did change us.
@k.s.k.7721

My Brownie to Scout transition was called a "flying up", if I recall, and we received a badge with 2 wings to put on our sash, below the official troop number, to show we did not join as Scouts, but moved up from Brownies. And yes, it was a big deal at the time. Thanks for the memory.

Ah, your description of this makes me want to write historical romance. Can you imagine seeing the men emerge from the bath, after all that praying, and secretly being in love with one of them? Who would you have been, to have seen that? Then perhaps being present for the kind of procession you're describing? There must have been so much passion around this ceremony, named or unnamed. I love this so much. Thank you for making this video, Dr. Kat.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Chuck decided to harken back to history and tradition during his coronation. The monarchy is at an all time low in terms of popularity, and an appeal to a more “mystical” and “romantic” time might be a decent way to stabilize his position. I don’t know if that would work though, as he might come off as a sort of Louis XVI (“partying while the people are starving”)

It was the anointing that was the most sacred ceremony that was thought to make the king or queen semi devine. This was done sometime before the coronation it was the anointing which made the king not the crowning. Although it was acknowledged that if the sovereign for whatever reason could neither be anointed or crowned he was still the legal sovereign.

I too have lived in the reign of three monarchs I was born seventy two years. I hope to be proficient in the English language some day but not enough to worry about it I don’t really see the point of worrying about sparse punctuation marks or proper spelling and since I love long run on sentences too I am sorry if my comments lack clarity….well not really sorry but as a Canadian I am required to say sorry. My son says I should so I sprinkle a few full stops and commas when I remember them do you think that the language police might be offended that I don’t make that effort? There I am pleased with myself that I actually inserted a question mark and in the correct place too. I have a question for you do you enunciate Aunty to rhyme with anti I tell my nephews that I am not there Ant I am their daughtie / dotty Aunty. Since apples don’t fall far from the tree I credit the source of my sense of humour to my wonderful mother . She likely inherited hers from Grampy Ho Ho all of his grandchildren called him that as his laughter sounded like that. I have it on good authority that I am not really dotty even though I have burned my supper a few times I haven’t burned a hole in the pan..yet. I told my primary doctor that I would like the cognitive test though due to family history and that I viewed as a base line for the future after discussing it with my son. He was so relieved that my pots and pans didn’t have holes as a close friends mother is in bad shape . When I asked the Doctor if he thought that I could tell my son that I got an A+ on the test he laughed and said yes.. it was the easiest test I aced it even read one part of it upside down as he was writing a three word question for me to read and write a response as he was handling me the clipboard I told him what I had read my reply was about six times as long as I like to be a wordy devil . It’s six in the morning so I have to take my eye drops and continue my day thank you for letting me know about oak apple Ciao Linda AKA adniL eaM setaG I didn’t mention that I missed the day grammar was taught and I regret that I left out a few words that would have made my intentions clear…it is what it is I hope you find it in your heart to not give me an F maybe a C please or a D if you must 😇🌟🍀🌟👍👍👍🌟❤️🌟🖖🖖🖖🌟🍀🌟🖖🙋🏼‍♀️🖖🇨🇦

May 24th was Queen Victoria's birthday and Canadians have observed it since 1845. Nowadays it is celebrated with a long weekend (Saturday through Monday) - it is less common now to hear it called Victoria Day - now it is more often called simply 'May 24th' and a new name 'the May long' has recently appeared. Since Victoria's death it has been considered to be the celebration of the birthday of the current monarch It is the traditional beginning of summer, often celebrated with fireworks (when I was a child it was also called Firecracker Day) and outdoor parties.
@lindagates9150
@lindagates9150 Год назад
@@annemorton5236 thank you for filling me in . I am having a bit of a chuckle that I never did any research as to why we were celebrating the 24th . You would think that someone who was born over seventy years ago would have been aware of the story behind the celebration. I am amazed that I truly don’t remember it being referred to as Victoria Day. I can recall that Canada Day was Dominion Day so I am left to conclude that I was not paying attention to a commonly known fact that is universally recognized by everyone else. Another small chuckle I expect that we will still be celebrating the Queen’s birthday in 2023. It’s funny that I knew the Queens birthday was celebrated on a different day in the UK but I assumed that it was done so for political reasons. Perhaps weather related. I shall have a conversation with my young granddaughter so that she will know the truth about the 24th. I am smiling and looking forward to teaching her the words of the song too and filling her in on the Oak Apple day as well.
