Armenian here. So, once in the history class I learnt why it's both called Armenian and Hayastan. You got right on the explanation of Hayastan. So the name Armenia comes from the Armenian epic poem's "Daredevils of Sassoun" character called Armen. Although I don't really remember how did the country get the English name, but I remember that it was indeed somehow connected with Armen.

There's a error: Mount Ararat was only called that starting in the 1200's-1300s, it wasn't believed to be Ararat before then. It had a different name I forget.

Ar was the Pegan Armenian main God, the God of the sun, the creator. So Ar men ia menas the Ar people or people from Ar's land. That's how the foreigners used to call us in Latin, which came from ancient Greek Btw, Ararat means the place of creation.

That name Hayastan actually sounds beautiful, and that's what I think it should be called instead of Armenia! That's just my opinion of course!

“Armenia” comes from the King of Urartu’s name, Arame. The Persians got the name “Armanistan” for Armenia from the Armenian king Arame. Also, Urartu is an Armenian kingdom which also wasnt called “Urartu” by its native population. It was called Bianilli/Van. Urartu comes from the Assyrian word Uruatri, which was their name for the kingdom.
