1. The city was way more magnificent after the building projects of Justinian's which were after the nika. 2. The city declined for a 200-300 years but it has its revival till the 4th crusade when lots of new magnificent buildings were build

The increase of the population does not mean that it recovered. Athens today for example holds almost 30% of the population of Greece, however, by an architectural perspective, it is a nightmare. The same goes for the Favelas.

@@klidouxos Thats a comparision between Ancient times and Modern times. Given that this was in the same era, an increase in population would lead to an increase in magnificence and growth. Unfortunately the Fourth Crusade came knocking and destroyed any chance of the last Romans holding off the Turks.

Thessaloniki was widely considered the “second city” of the eastern empire. That being said, they also had cities like Alexandria, Carthage, and Antioch well into the 7th century.

This is why everyone who says the "Dark ages werent actually dark" are wrong. Constantinople peaked around Antiquity, was inferior to Rome, and yet was still considered the greatest European city by lightyears during the Middle Ages.

How was it inferior to Rome? Constantine literally stripped Rome to build Constantinople and it wouldn't recover from that well ever really but not until the 15th century. Constantinople at its zenith was probably just as impressive or more impressive as Rome at it's.
