Bart Cornelis is fantastic!!! What a wonderful, short but, jam-packed, impactful discussion about Frans Hals. Just terrific!! We hope Bart does more of these RU-vid presentations on Dutch and Flemish art! and Wow! the pieces you have on display from Frans Hals are incredible! Thank you for doing these online videos as it allows us in the US to enjoy our membership at The National Gallery from afar.
@RealSalica
That was the best description of the work of an artist I've ever heard , probably because I agree with him on everything .
@nikolasao
This guy invented candid photos before there were cameras
@sambabird7
Frans Hals seems to capture the “presence” of a person and convey it all of these centuries later. I really enjoyed this.

I saw The Laughing Cavalier at the Wallace Collection in London about 50 years ago. It was a painting that I thought I was very familiar with because it was in an old encyclopedia of my mother's, but getting very close up to it, I was stunned to see just how impressionistic it was in real life, given its date [1624].

Frans Hals' work is always a treat for the eye. I love how he renders lace cuffs, neck ruffs and facial features. You could easily imagine walking into any of his sitters on the street and having a conversation with them, they are that realistic.

Frans Hals.....a really really great painter.
@MRizzio
What a splendid introduction to an artist I never even knew existed. Thank you
@dejffjed
To me how Monet and other impressionists could capture the unique moment and atmosphere of a scenery is the same how Frans Hals could capture the genuineness of people. One of my favourite artists.
@FraxinusExelsior
Fantastic description and passion

Thank you so much for this, I could listen to Bart Cornelis all day. The quality and color of the paintings shown in the video are much appreciated, most of the images of his work online do not show the level of detail and color as you have shown here. In that last painting shown of a woman standing, I love how gestural her hands are, the way they are painted reminds me somewhat of Sargents brush work, I suppose he may have studied Hals, but it is amazing to think this painting was created about 400 years ago, so innovative and outstandingly fresh. The only painting by him that I have seen in person is "The Rommel-Pot Player" in Fort Worth, TX. It is an absolutely incredible painting for one done in his time, even if photography had been invented back then, a photograph could never have captured this seeming snap-shot in time in quite the same endearing way. I had no idea that there are no known or found drawings or sketches by him, as prolific as he was, amazing!

Those joyous laughs and smiles! Wonderful and from a time when people usually looked so dour in their portraits. I bet Frans Hals loved a good joke 😊 wouldn't it be brilliant to travel back in time and watch him at work.
@hellie_el
❤❤❤❤❤ like painted snapshots!
@charlesfleeman1765
The end discussion about casual expressions, rather than posed for sitting is interesting. I remember the photographer who took the famous portrait of Winston Churchill said that his look was the result of the photographer snatching a cigar from Churchill's hand.
@aljazariofficial7780
Perfect skill
@telemachus53
Hals' greatness has also to do with sound. His portraits always seem to have an accompanying sound track which complements the action implied by the portrait. Truly a great artist.
@johnreynolds5407
Excellent presentation.
@PhilipMurphyExtra
Frans Hal is a great painter for sure, All good art should be noticed.
@geoffreykeane4072
Splendid video!
@Sheepdog1314
love this artist. His style is almost photographic, like a snapshot of the time
