The history of Germany and the people who are known as Germans or Germanic is so vast, varied and complex. One of the biggest victories of the Germanic people was beating the Romans at the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD. There is even a monument in the middle of the forest.

and everyone talks about the "Gang to Canossa" (Walk to Canossa) and few remember or know that it was a German king of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1076-> King Henry IV was excommunicated by Pope Gregory VII and the king had to make a petition and penitential visit to Canossa to the pope residing there. Henry IV tried to placate the Pope and the other nobles in order to be elected emperor. By the way, a legend says that this king declared at that time: "If the Pope wears his signet ring on his right hand as a sign of his covenant with God and the marriage between a man and a woman also reflects this covenant, then all married couples should wear their rings on their ring finger your right hand ";) ** There are some who wonder why the majority of German couples wear their wedding rings on their right hand ring finger.

Because video creators don't start telling German history until the 16th century, I would like to add something: German history begins in the early Middle Ages - more precisely in the 10th century. In 962, Otto I, King of East Francia, was crowned Emperor by the Pope. This made Emperor Otto I the first emperor in Europe since Charlemagne (150 years earlier). The empire of Charlemagne had disintegrated 2 generations after his death - France emerged from the Wetfrank Empire. And the eastern part will later be called the "Holy Roman Empire of German Nation". The Holy Roman Empire of German Nation was an empire that existed for over 840 years. It was built in the middle of the 10th century and was destroyed by Napoleon in 1806. However, this empire was never really a unified empire, but rather a puzzle of countless small counties, principalities, duchies and free cities. Over time, it called itself the "Holy Roman Empire (of German Nation)" because it was ruled by an emperor (modeled after ancient Rome). In the Middle Ages, the emperor was also crowned in Rome by the pope. Then he could call himself "Roman Emperor". However, the emperor did not have much power, because the political power structure was too much a matter for the individual sovereigns, dukes and counts. In the Holy Roman Empire, the throne was not inherited, but certain princes (called "Kurfürsten" - "elector princes") elected the king, who could then still be crowned emperor by the pope. The emperor of the empire also regarded himself as the supreme protector of the faith from Rome. (Nevertheless, there were power struggles and rivalries with Rome from time to time.) For all these reasons, this strange entity called itself the "Holy Roman Empire", although it was never really a unified empire, but a huge puzzle of loosely connected small states. With a politically weak emperor who was dependent on the princes. After the Thirty Years' War, the hoped-for unity of religion was over. Catholics and Protestants were fairly equally represented. And at the Peace of Westphalia of 1648, they had to recognize each other. After that, the empire became politically more and more decentralized, and in the 18th century, Prussia rose to become a new great power, challenging the emperor in Vienna. Last but not least, in 1806, Napoleon dealt the final death blow to the strange empire. In the 19th century, the Germans began to wish for a truly united modern state, mainly due to the struggle with and against Napoleon. In 1848 there was even a revolution, but it failed. It was not until 1871 that the first German unification succeeded: with the German Reich (1871 - 1918), the first real German nation state was born. ("Reich" means "empire".) The Prussian Prime Minister Otto von Bismarck forged together this first German nation-state as a result of 3 wars. The Prussian king became German Emperor. And Bismarck, the first chancellor of the German Reich. The German Empire collapsed as a result of the First World War. The monarchy was abolished on 9 November 1918 and the republic was proclaimed. This first German democratic republic adopted a constitution in Weimar in 1919 and is therefore called the "Weimar Republic". In 1919 the first German republic (called the Weimar Republic) came into being. But already in 1933 Hitler destroyed it again. Unfortunately, the Weimar Republic only lived for 14 years. The most important reasons for its failure were once crises (such as the stock market crash of 1929) and, above all, the fact that this first German republic had too many opponents and enemies of the republic in administration, the judiciary and parliament. These people could not make friends with the new political system and began to undermine democracy after the economic crisis. In 1933 they made Hitler chancellor. In 1939 the 2nd World War began ... In 1949, today's republic - the Federal Republic of Germany - was born. And also the GDR. However, as early as 1949, the constitution of the Federal Republic of Germany set out the goal of achieving reunification once again. But it took 41 years to get there. The peaceful revolution in the GDR in the autumn of 1989 made it possible for German reunification to take place on 3 October 1990. That's why October 3rd is our national holiday.

The day of the signature of a treaty is our national holiday. Well, okay, so is the American. But couldn't the Germans have waited until summer 91? A day off in fall usually isn't worth much in Central European climate. (And maybe some details of the treaty would have been reconsidered if not signed in a hurry.)

It's very interesting imo, and is often overlooked in history for the more prominent Roman empire and other big cultures of the time. This title is a bit misleading. This video shows Prussian domination over Germany rather than the rise of Germany. Yes, in this case we can talk about the emergence of the modern German state (and later the contemporary one), but the history of Germany and its fragmented statehood goes back far back. The ancient Greeks and then the Romans called these areas Germania (Referring to the ethnic majorities) . After the fall of the Roman Empire, the warring Germanic tribes were briefly united by the Germanic tribe of the Franks (from the 5th century AD), whose proto-German state turned into the Empire of Charlemagne and then split into three parts, giving rise to most of the states of Central and Western Europe (9th- 10th century AD). From the western and central parts of the former lands conquered by the Franks and Charlemagne, the main German states arose (Bavaria, Swabia, Saxony, Hesse, Thuringia, Carinthia), loosely connected with each other by family ties and dynastic relations, which soon merged into a more integrated state, later called the Holy Roman Empire (and later still the Holy Roman Empire of the German nation). The country had a different structure than most European countries, but it was a power for almost 1,000 years. It also had a supreme ruler (elected emperor), a national parliament (Reichstag), and a joint judicial and legislative power. The truth is that the emperor's power was very limited, he had to take into account kings, princes and bishops, and the so-called free merchant cities, who had significant independence in their domains. This country consisted of several hundred different areas (not only German-speaking), but all neighbors referred to this country as Germany and its inhabitants as Germans (that is why there are so many different names for Germany). Napoleon put an end to this state, which again led to its disintegration into many separate, loosely connected parts and the creation of Austria as a separate state from other German areas. But this is already covered in the video above.

My first reaction at this starting with Martin Luther was "wow, that's late". At bare minimum, the 10th century would have been good... although probably start with Charlemagne and the partition of his empire. Also, could have mentioned Bismarck proclaimed the Empire in Versailles' Hall of Mirrors, humiliating France even more. That said... i was in German elementary school when the Wall fell, but it was nothing that really impacted me. Ok, we visited the people we had sent care packages to before it fell (and one day, I was confused about my morning cartoons ending to pictures of Yeltsin's tanks in front of the Duma) but we actually covered it in History class and we got away much better than Russia...

@@jesuszockt3531 not really, that mostly is a myth that started during German Nationalism, because it obviously looks like it could be this kind of battle. Arminius made a great military alliance, but it didn't really have a long term impact on anyone's identity. No historic or archaeological evidence really points into that direction. Oh man... The way everything is shortened here and only half shown makes my toenails curl up! And such pathetic mistakes... For example, only a very small part of Schleswig, namely the so-called North Schleswig, fell back to Denmark, even though the country had not played a part in the First World War. But much worse are the omissions. Hardly a word about the Treaty of Versailles and why this misguided peace treaty was the foundation for the Nazis and the next war. I would just like to make two brief comments here. It was said very briefly and almost misleadingly in the statement that the militarily strengthened Nazis had "conquered" Austria. This is only partially true, because Austria wanted to join Germany as early as 1919, which was forbidden by the victors. So much for the “right of self-determination of peoples” that was so loudly propagated by the Allies during the First World War. But let us listen to a man who was the head of government of one of the main victorious nations in 1919: Sir David Lloyd George, First Minister of His Majesty the King of England, at Versailles in 1919... "One may strip Germany of her colonies, reduce her army to a mere police force, and reduce her fleet to the strength of a fifth-rate power. Nevertheless, in the end, when Germany feels that she has been treated unjustly in the peace of 1919, she will find means , to compel its conquerors to make restitution. To obtain recompense, our conditions may be severe, they may be harsh and even ruthless, but at the same time they may be so fair that the country upon which we impose them feels it in its heart have no right to complain. But injustice and arrogance, displayed in the hour of triumph, will never be forgotten nor forgiven. I can think of no stronger reason for a future war than that of the German people, who will certainly prove themselves to be one of the most vigorous and powerful tribes in the world, would be surrounded by a number of smaller states, some of which had never before been able to establish a stable government for themselves, but each of which would contain large numbers of Germans who longed for reunification with their homeland .” But that's exactly what happened...

1525 is far too late to begin German history. The usual starting point is the Frankish Empire under Charlemagne and its division after Charlemagne's death in 814. His son Louis the Pious inherited his father's Frankish Empire, but was unable to secure its existence, so that it ultimately ended in the succession dispute in the Treaty of Verdun (843 ) was divided among his three sons. Charles the Bald became West Frankish king and thus formed the basis of today's France, Lothar I became king in the Lotharii Regnum (Middle Kingdom) and Louis the German, East Frankish king. Lothair I was the foundation of the later rich, influential, but repeatedly disputed Duchy of Burgundy between France and Germany, while Louis's nickname already clearly shows that his empire formed the basis of the later German Empire and thus its starting point.

For some reason you guys always seem to choose this podcaster for your reaction videos. Now whilst he did a very decent job explaining, there is one massive point of criteria. He basically started a few Thousand years too late. Germany may not be old as such, but the history of the Germans goes back not centuries but millenia when the Indo Germanic tribes settled all across mid/western Europe including the British isles and Scandinavia. What is now Germany is a melting pot (especially now) but has always been that. That aside, Germany was for the longest time a land filled with different tribes described as barbarians by the Romans. Then in the medieval era Germany still was no unified country, rather being the mirror opposite. It was the country with the highest proportion of opposing factions worldwide. Germany then was nothing but a mass of dukedoms, baronies, fiefdoms and bandits and had a multitude of kings. Eventually it united under the banner of the Holy Roman Empire led by the Emperor and guided by the Pope. (The Holy Roman Empire has nothing to do with the late Roman Empire btw.) Fun fact. Before Christianity spread across Europe, Germany believed in the Germanic Gods such as Wotan, Baldur, Donar and Freya who are the very same Gods you know as Asgardians. Wotan is Odin and Donar is Thor. Donner is German for thunder 😉

I hate those kind of videos on YT, which claim to summarise centuries of history in so few minutes because a) in large parts they do not take historical research into account at all and b) precisely for this reason they present the viewer with an oversimplified picture of history as it has happened. Historical events are just as complex as what is happening right now before all our eyes... be it with Europe, the Middle East, China, Africa or the various Americas. There are various acteurs with many differing interests involved, and many different events in many different places occur on the same timelines, well, infuencing each other vice versa. The *results* are… well… temporary… meaning, there are no final results. At least, if climate change doesn't f**k us all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
