I have compiled all the footage of chimpanzees at Chiba Zoo, which was filmed from January 2022 to December 2022, into one video. I will do the same for the 2023 version in the near future. Most of the footage has been shared in bits and pieces in the gorilla videos, but this time I decided to compile them all into one video by year, including previously unreleased footage. You will see short glimpses of Monta in the video since he is housed next to their exhibit. Along with editing the video, my understanding of the species has deepened. I hope it will help you, too. Chimpanzees are the closest relative to humans. Western chimpanzees are the subspecies of the common chimpanzees. They live in multimale-multifemale, fission-fusion communities (meaning that the social unit is not cohesive and may split and merge depending on time of day, availability of reproductive females and food). Females tend to leave their natal community when they reach reproductive age [1]. They have rounder muzzles and more prominent brows than Eastern and Central chimpanzees [2]. Their threats are bushmeat hunting, habitat loss and human diseases.

Major events on record that happened around them:
▪︎ 1985/04/20 Santa and Gigio were transferred to Chiba Zoo with *Narsa*♀ and *Pietan*♀. They were all around 2 yrs old.🥲
▪︎ 1985/04/23 *Sunny*♀ and *Penta*♀ came to Chiba Zoo. They were around 11 years old. Not many things were known about these two individuals.
▪︎ 1985/06/03 *Hatsuo*♂ and *Sachi/Tokiko*♀ came to Chiba Zoo. Hatsuo's age was not known, but he was a fully grown adult when arrival. Sachi (now named Tokiko) was wild-born. When she arrived at the zoo, she was around 9 years old.
▪︎ 1986/03/31 Hatsuo was transferred to Yoshikawa animal trading company and was moved to Nogeyama Zoo. He was then transferred to China (Shanghai Zoo) in June 1986.
▪︎ 1987/10/05 Sunny was moved to Yoshikawa animal trade company. She was transferred to China (Shenyang Zoo) in November 1991.
▪︎ 1996/04/20 Penta died from acute heart failure at the age of 22.
▪︎ 1997/02/10 Sachi (now called Tokiko) was transferred to Nasu World Monkey Park via North-South trading company. She was transferred to Tohoku Safari Park in January 2009.
▪︎ 2010/06/08 Narsa died from liver tumor at the age of 27.
▪︎ 2016/09/16 Pietan was transferred to Hirakawa Zoo in Kagoshima prefecture.

世界チンパンジーの日おめでとうございます🍃懸命に毎日を過ごす2人を見て命の美しさに涙が出ました。ジージョの素敵なネストがチンパンジーと人間の関係性をしっかり考える機会を与えてくれている気持ちになりました。彼等に感謝を持ち大切に接したいです。魅力いっぱいのジージョとサンタ✨どうか健康で長生きしてください。これからも2人の映像を心から楽しみにしています。

ネストづくりが彼らの生活にどれほど大事かということをジージョを通して教えてもらいました。直接加害をしていないとしても彼らを絶滅に追い込んできたのは赤ちゃんを欲しがる昔の動物園であることは事実なので、今そのかれらが種らしく生活できるよう園は最善の努力を惜しまないでほしいし、私たちもそれをちゃんと見届けていきたいと思います。私もまた彼らに会うのを心から楽しみにしています⭐️ドリーホワイトさん、いつもコメントありがとうございます。Happy World Chimpanzee Day!

日本のチンパンジーでベッド作りができるのはコイコちゃんだけだと思っていたので、ジージョちゃんも作っていたのは初めて知りました。ただコイコちゃんが枝を編み込んだ複雑な作りなのに対してジージョちゃんのは草を集めた簡易ベッド的なのが可愛いです。❤個性が出ますね。😊 京都ではニイニ君やロジャー君が今もベッド作りに挑戦しているのかな？やはり大人を見て真似て覚えるのですね。改めて群れで暮らすことの重要さを感じました。陽気な印象のあるサンタ君ですが、ジージョちゃんと二人で静かに過ごしている場面では元気で仲良く長生きをして欲しいと願わずにはいられません。そのためにも園にはもう少し頑張っていただけたら…と思います。

rocket pochiさん、コメントありがとうございます⭐️福岡市動物園のサクラやいしかわ動物園のキケもベッド作りができるようです。意外にたくさんいるかもしれないですね。驚いたことはキケに関しては、タロンガ動物園で生まれているので、彼女がそのスキルがあるということは母親が野生育ちか、もしくはベッド作りの文化をちゃんと継承できるよう園が環境造りに尽力されているか、もしくはその両方という可能性が考えられますね。ジージョに関してはなにせ材料に限りがあるのでスキル不足は大目にみてあげたい😝遠くから彼女の動きをみていると織り込んでいるようにも見えるのですが、あつめているだけかもしれないですね。今はどうか分かりませんが、キケがベッド作りをしている十数年前の動画をRU-vidで拝見させてもらったのですが、材料が少なすぎて涙が出てきそうになりました。きっとタロンガではたくさんの枝葉を用意してもらっていたことでしょうに🥲今は改善されていることを願いたいです。動物園でこの行動を見れなくなるのは本当に残念なことですよね。その意味で京都市動物園さんの取り組みは素晴らしいです。他の園にも広がっていくといいなと思います🙏

@@karintogorillas 様ベッドを作る子がそんなにいるんですね！そうかあ…ジージョちゃんもキケちゃんも材料不足だったんですね…。京都は財政状況も厳しいですし、放飼場も決して広くはないのにゴリラもチンパンジーも幸せそうに見えます。京都にできる事が他園さんではどうしてできないのでしょうか…。悲しいです。😢

同じことをJMCのタロウに感じました。ひとりだけど幸せそう。ひとりだけどぼーっとしておらず、やることあるな、と。JMCや京都市動物園ができるのに他の園ができないのは、はやり人でしょうね・・・どういう人材を雇い入れるかが根本的に違う気がします。日本の動物園こんなばらばらでいいのかというのは考えてしまいます。だって一番影響うけるのは動物ですものね。

大変見応えのある動画ありがとうございます😊 充実している、とは言えない環境でもペアで過ごしていることで救われている部分はあるのでしょう。幼い頃に来園したジージョが寝床作りするのは不思議ですね🤔ただ展示するだけでなく、貴重な行動を観察できるよう環境を整えてほしいですね千葉市動物公園には…。てか、チンパンジーが寝床作りするって飼育員さんはご存じなのか…疑問ですね😥 概要欄を読んで、トキコが千葉市→那須WMP→東北サファリパークと移動していた事に大変驚いた。そんなに移動していたとは知りませんでした。トキコは推定1976年生まれ。かなりの高齢です。劣悪な環境で暮らしていますから、もし現在も所有権が千葉市動物公園にあるのだったら戻してほしい、と思いました🥲

ドンのあしあとさん、ありがとうございます⭐️私も同感です。充実していない環境でも、同居人がいること、その二人が相性が良いことが何事にも変えられないエンリッチメントになっていると思います。しかしそれにあぐらをかかずに、園には引き続きいろいろ工夫してよりよい環境づくりにつとめてほしいと心から思います。担当者ひとりでチンパンジーとゴリラという似ているようでまったく異なる種を同時に担当するのはやはり歪みが出てくると思います。そこらへんどうにかならないのかと思います。ジージョのネスト作りは2020年に担当されていた飼育員さんがSNSで写真を投稿してくれています。でもジージョのネスト作りはたぶん日々の日課だと思うので、種に無頓着な担当者さんでも「この◯はなんだ？」と気づくと思います😅どれだけ貴重なスキルを有しているかということには気づいておられないかもしれないです💦この技術が子孫や群れの子達に継承されることなく消えて行くのかと思うと残念です。トキコのことはほんとうに気になります。類人猿研究所さんが以前撮影してくださった映像みるとほんとにショックですよね。動物商経由で移動しているので所有は千葉ではないと思いますが、よくわからないです。できるなら、千葉よりサンクチュアリのほうが断然望ましいと思いますが、高齢の個体となると移動のリスクがあるので難しいのかもしれないですね。

Poor Monta, noisy neighbours at it again...😅 The nest building seems a built-in instinct. I follow Chimpanzee Sanctuary North West which houses rescued chimps from the "entertainment " industry and lab testing. One of theirs did phantom nest building - poor thing had had to pretend she had nesting material in the past, and even though she now had all the material she wanted she still built a pretend nest.

Thank you, Anne, for sharing your knowledge about nest building skills of chimpanzees. I also follow CSNW channel, but I haven't watched all of their videos. So, thank you for letting me know about the chimps there build nests. Do you happen to know why Jamie at CSNW likes to tuck a boot in her pelvic pocket? I found it so interesting.

@@karintogorillasHi Karin! Jamie just likes boots, all kinds of boots. In one video she was admiring a visitor's boots, and the lady gave them to her! Jamie was thrilled. She also communicates to the staff which boots she'd like them to wear if they give her an option, and will 'groom' them using a thin stick between the mesh. There is another chimp at the CSNW who loves dolls, especially troll type dolls with fluffy hair. I think that they just have preferences, just like people do

I just looked it up, Foxie is the one who likes dolls. And Cy loves to look at picture books and magazines, although he gets frightened by pictures of rhinos for some reason. The chimps there are endlessly fascinating, and the sanctuary seems to do a wonderful job caring for them. They even held a 'funeral' when one chimp died, laying her body out respectfully and allowing the chimps who wanted to visit their friend one last time. It was very moving.
