Eddie Van Halen was once asked "what does it feel like to be the greatest guitarist of all time?" His response, "I don't know, go ask Roy Clark." That is the type of respect the guitar greats had for Roy.

Here is my version. So there is at least some truth in what you say. There is an Urban Legend about Roy Clark. Don't know if it is true, choose for yourself. At some point in their life Both Jimi Hedrix and Eddie Van Halen were asked what it is like to be the best guitar player. They said "I don't know go ask ROY CLARK". I know a guy who was in California in the 80's in a Heavy Metal Band. I asked him. He said everybody in the music industry knew Roy Clark was amazing.

@@vandergrad I think Roy played second fiddle in the pecking order to Buck Owens who was talented in his own right, but couldn't hold a candle to Roy instrumentally. I was young when it happened but didn't the Buck Owens show morph into Hee Haw? Hence, Buck having top billing. All that said, no conversation or list of, or about the greatest guitarists ever is complete without mentioning Roy Clark.

When watching a classic Roy Clark performance it is very easy to miss how incredibly good he was at just playing the guitar, because he was so entertaining in other ways. I dare say that almost no one achieved the same level of communication, while playing, as Roy Clark did. Then you add in how amazing he was with basically anything with strings on it and you have to concede he was one of the best pickers ever.

It was cancelled very quickly but became the first syndicated TV show that was brought back totally because of viewer mail insisting that the show be put back on the airwaves! Each week, there was a musical guest featured on the show and everyone who was anyone in the country music pantheon at the time eventually appeared on Hee Haw! How did he do that? Well, people used to have this thing called "talent" and that's how people got chosen for things like movies, television, and radio. Now people are often primarily chosen for their skin color or "identity" with talent being a secondary consideration in the selection process. Doing it this way rather cheapens any talents or achievements a person has. I'd hate to be in a position where I'd have to wonder if I were chosen for my abilities or because I'm a woman. If it weren't for the "diversity and inclusion" being pushed out there I'd be less skeptical about why a person was cast. I used to think it was because the directors liked someone's audition the best. Now I'm less sure. There are amazing, talented people from all walks of life, and it's awful that so often their talent gets overshadowed and drowned out by an agenda.

Roy entertaining was an art form in and of itself. His technique when he just played without the comedy was mesmerizing; jaws dropped open, eyes grew wide, and minds wondered at the virtuosity they had just witnessed. You saw it, you heard it, but you still can’t believe it.
