I love seeing young people discover one of the greatest love songs ever performed. I have been listening to Unchained Melody most of my life and was thrilled to find this "Live" version that is better than the published copy. Listen to it again; while Bobby's vocals can't be beaten, listen to the strings and the horns, the genius of Phil Spector who arranged the music. The flowing strings are as soothing as Bobby's voice. The brothers originally flipped a coin to see who would sing Unchained Melody, and thank god Boby won.

The song was written for a 1955 movie called Unchained, about a guy in prison who couldn’t wait to get back to his girl. The guy who wrote the lyrics refused to put any of that stuff into the song so it became a general love song, sung by many before the Righteous Brothers did it .. but nobody else did it like this, altho many other singers covered the song later (including Elvis) and based their versions of it on this version by The Righteous Brothers ... It is a solo song, but the Righteous Brothers were a duo so they flipped a coin to see who was going to do it, and Bobby Hatfield won. The other member of the duo was Bill Medley who arranged the music for the studio version as well as for this performance AND he played piano while Bobby was singing .. so it was still a team effort. Bobby sang another version for the movie “Ghost “ and this revived interest in the 1965 version (this one) which was then re-released. The Righteous Brothers and this song made history by having two different versions of the same song in the Top20 of the charts at the same time, competing against each other!

Dean Bros -- no falsetto on this song. Pure tenor with range, power, timbre, intonation & phrasing. He hits controlled notes throughout that amazed most vocal coaches. What is amazing is that he never showboats. Sincerity & poignancy is real. Just a man and a microphone pulling tears from women's eyes for over 50 years. That's magic. (The Righteous Brothers had a contract that allowed each a solo song per album). You should try Roy Orbison's 1961 single "Crying" next. Another song that has that amazing vocal power & impression. Your reactions are incredible. Good job.

For music, it’s not Oscars or Emmys it’s usually Grammy’s unless the music is associated with a soundtrack. There’s artist that try to go for an EGOT which is an Emmy, Grammy, and Oscar, and Tony award. Righteous Brothers were nominated twice for Grammy award but didn’t not get them. They are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which is hard to get in.

He had a natural tenor voice of some 3 octaves and he sang this song without gimmicks, just a T.V. audience (with his parents and Bill Medley (a bass/baritone) his singing partner (not a relation) in the audience) and a T.V. show orchestra. Your grandmother probably already knows this song as it came out in 1955 (in a film called UNCHAINED sung by a black opera singer) and the Late Bobby Hatfield brought out this version in 1965 and it has become the most loved version of all times, in fact, this version is the most loved song of the 20th century) Elvis even sang it but he isn't a patch on Bobby's version. 🇦🇺🇦🇺👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

It's been one of my all time favorite songs since I was a young kid. It is considered to be one of the greatest love songs ever composed. It has been covered many times over by many great artists but Bobby Hatfield's version is probably the most well known & beloved the world over. This was definitely Bobby's song as no other can match his performance - so silky smooth & melodic, such a one of a kind ethereal voice that can make anyone swoon. My late uncle (RIP Bernie) used to call this song a "guaranteed panty dropper".

I was 16 yo when this song came out. There are some things in life that transcend all the issues that clutter our current world. This male solo is perhaps one of the best performances of all time. Bobby is the “GOAT” male solo pop vocalist. I also think Whitney Houston’s performance of “I Will Always Love You” is the best female pop vocal of all time. To me, there are no lines that divide the people of this world. We all feel the same about our families, friends and all the good things the Good Lord provided for us, here. I’ve seen so many things, changes that have transpired since my youth. The divisions of the human race are disappearing in favor of love and understanding. The life vibration of us all is moving beyond division to unity. Thank you for this great video. You are one special young man.

Bill and Bobby always did one solo on each of there albums and while on tour. They both wanted to do Unchained, so they flipped a coin. The music was written as the theme for the little-known prison film “Unchained” (January 1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers. The movie “Unchained” is about a man in prison and longing for his wife and children. Hoping his wife will still be there when he gets out. So you can now understand the meaning of the song. The movie was not very good, or so my friends told me. But we were all teenagers so what did we now. Several artists sang it and it made the billboard top 100. But no one can come close to Bobby Hatfield’s version. Bobby’s version hit the top ten chart. And did it again when it was used in the movie “Ghost” It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by Bobby. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages.

I am loving your reaction to this, you didn't even try to be cool, so adorable, you just fell under Bobby's spell like so many of us over the years. You were asking where Bill was? They were on the Andy Williams show, sang with him, sang together and UM was Bobby's song. He reportedly had a cold but he still sang like an angel! But they could also rock out, you know. Try Little Latin Lupe Lu for something completely different. And Tom Jones I'm never gonna fall in love again. he's got powerful vocals too.

Thanks for this reaction - you are clearly passionate about music! (guessing you're a musician yourself?) -- yep, this was just Bobby Hatfield on his own - the other "Righteous Bro" was Bill Medley - he sang the lower harmonies - but obviously not needed on this one -- BTW, I think they did win a couple of "Grammy" awards - one for this song..

Stephanie and Nageen hit the nail squarely on the head! many good comments. Bobby had an irresistible sweetness about him.

You'll love them singing "What I Say" on the same Andy Williams show and "Summertime" from H50 version. You'll get to see some of their personalities. Bobby hits a note that makes Andy Williams just stop in shock and Bobby has to pull his arm to get him singing again. Love your enthusiasm:-)

Jackie Wilson had a great voice like this. Sam Cooke was velvety smooth and sings in a pretty high register. Both are legends and you will not be disappointed.

You've opened Pandora's Box... The music you're listening to is magic. If not your parents, then your grandparents know these songs and they will tell you it was so much talent then. The sound, lyrics of the 1950's, 60's and 70's were clearly cleaner than the artists of today. It's the passion they put into it. They made the audience feel the music and in return the audience applauded. Nowadays, music seems like it's just words with no melodies and spitting on a microphone. For real, the singers of yesteryear would mop the floor with the singing of today's songs.
