One of the greatest horse races I've ever seen. I'm American, and I love american racing, but there's NOTHING like national hunt racing from GB/IRE. When it's done right, it's still the BEST thing going.
I went on a tour of the National Stud in Newmarket today and actually met Lord Wondemere. He is in retirement there 10 years on and looks great. Such a sweet gentle horse who lives polos. Sadly he is a gelding and never managed to transition to another job after stopping racing. I don't follow racing - justlove horses - and had to look him up and found this video. What a race!
Best race ever for me. I backed Lac Fontana and Tiger Roll on that day in the first two races, then I had reverse forcast Very Wood-Deputy Dan (RIP), so I won huge money. Never backed Lord V but I was so happy for him, from last place to win this, it was incredible.
Was there that day as well, couldn't pick my nose, let alone a winner! From memory Lord Windermere was a 50/1 winner? Think I was on The Giant Bolster but genuinely can't remember.
The guys who ride these horses have balls of steel .to get on one of these animals race at such speed and jump several fences with other horses potentially falling on top of you takes amazing courage i only hope they get well paid for doing this..personally i think there mad for even doing this
Strangest Cheltenham festival in years, and not the most enjoyable for me personally. How the heck did Lord Windermere win a Gold Cup? Unreal ride from Davy Russell, similar to the way AP McCoy won on Synchronised in 2012, both horses never on the bridle!
A strange race this, for most part Lord Windermere looked a hopeless case out the rear but the persistance of Davy Russell got him home in front. On His Own up there throughout plugged on gallantly to be narrowly beaten into second, the form however never really held up the following season.
Cheltenham Tips form after a gold cup? There is no such thing. Other than Kauto Star the gold cup has destroyed every winner in recent years. It's the bittersweet nature of the race. This isn't a 6f spin around Lingfield, this is The Colosseum.
Whats with the HOW DID HE WIN bit ? He travelled well throughout, went the shortest route , avoided all trouble.. Never made a mistake and was never really off the bridle, just niggled to get into contention and ridden out
What an amazing race, unreal tactics from Davy Russell, very similar tactics good old Exotic Dancer used to use staying well out the back and then picking them off one by one from about 4 out (Except Kauto of course).
There are 2 horses that fit the frame this year of winning it, Many clouds( Sherwood ) and Djakadam ( Mullins ). Many Clouds fits the bill as he's improving , hasnt failed an attempt , and comes into the race winning top class races .Mullins nag is the handicap improver .( Synchronised, Windermere ,Kicking King etc) were horses that had the same profile's as the 2 I have just mentioned . S Conti is the meetings Bismark , sunk without trace, and the bookies satchels bulging.
Lord windemere was matched in running at about 400/1 on the exchnages. Even knowing the results when I warch this replay i cant believe this horse won!!!!! funny thing is that lord windemere raced for another 3 and half yrs after this and never won a race since till it retired!! lol
I had a tenner on at 70 in running, i had a tenner before the race at 38.... i had a feeling the horse was out the back cuz thats where davy wanted him and snatched a ayrton senna at 70. It turned out to be a smart play for me. I didnt lay anything off( normally i would have done),but i was just astonished watching davy cut through...couldnt believe what i was seeing i was like a rabbit caught in the headlights. As years go by people will watch this and realise how clever Davy was in the saddle. I will miss him when he retires he has given me some great days over the years. First lieutenant, weapons amnesty, lord windermere, tiger roll. Truly great jockey. Top top top class
Why were there so many strange results at Cheltenham 2014? Because the horses who had been running on heavy ground for four months had to compete on good ground.
Does anybody know what spooked Silviniaco Conti and Bobsworth on the run in ? It was a very strange finish. I think Barry Geraghty got his tactics wrong towards the end. I will stick with the 2 horses mentioned above for the 2015 race. Probably Silviniaco because he has improved since this race. He was very good in the King George
someone had a laser pen in the crowd. Jockey D.Jacobs was badly injured in the race before the Gold Cup when his horse was `spooked`..something was not right on the run-in and was affecting the horses.
Barry Walsh You mean like Greville Starkey was spooked with a lazer gun at ascot on Il De Chypre which was never proved and with 100,000 people at cheltenham no one saw a man with a lazer pen . Dick Francis my treat
There's always strange results at Cheltenham because of the uphill finish and add the fact they've gone from running on heavy ground all winter to running on better ground here, plus there's a load of 20 runner fields that make it a total lottery in terms of the pace of the race etc.. basically its bookies xmas, birthday and anniversaries all at once. I wouldn't risk my worst enemy's money on it never mind my own. Conti was my pick in this but didn't back it.. backed Conti in the bowl at Aintree mind and also the King George as well.
Something spooked bobs and conti. It is the same area as to where Daryl Jacob was unshipped from port melon. I have my suspicions. Why did the 3 placed horses come down that side of the track.Never have I seen a gold cup winner that far off the rail..
Nothing spooked Silviniaco Conti or Bobs Worth. SC went on to do exactly the same thing in the Betfair Bowl. Interestingly, this was the largest field he's faced in his career (he'd only once faced 10+ runners before). It was probably the extra distance that was the main problem. SC drifted one way towards BW who immediately became unbalanced. He then drifted towards the three placed horses who went the way they did because SC carried them across. I could immediately think of Dawn Run and The Thinker who were that far across from the rail. It looks you're looking for a conspiracy involving Russell, Casey and Scudamore.
I'm not gonna say how many years I have watched racing because Tha has no relevance, but the jockey trainer comments do and none have mentioned any horse being spooked. Its bloody Cheltenham have you heard the noise!!You would need to fire a cannon.Just tired horses and in contis case he was hurting with the ulcers,he ran off line winning at Aintree the following month. He will piss the gold cup next month.I'm on for a fortune, come on!!Nap of the meeting.Good luck.
MrSmid888 You may have been watching racing longer than me. But I have just watched this video clip again and the race was between Silviniaco and bobsworth after the last. Something strange happened on that run in. I agree that barring mishap Silviniaco will win this year, but I think Bobsworth will be second.
“As in 2014, he dropped to last on the first circuit but on this occasion he failed to make any late progress and was pulled up by Russell at the second last. The horse's owner was unhappy with Davy Russell's performance and insisted that he should not ride Lord Windermere again. “ It’s a fickle old game.
Silviniaco Conti here reminds me a bit of Wayward Lad in the 80s... A classier horse at 3m or even 3m1 who didn't quite stay up the hill. He seemed to take more restraining than most after the first false start, but it's debatable if made the difference and it looked like he just got out stayed. I can't believe this is a strong Gold Cup, but Triolo d'Alene is interesting. I hadn't realized how badly he was squeezed at the 2nd last, jumping into The Giant Bolster's back end. It totally destroyed his rhythm and McCoy just eased him. He may be better than that.
I had On His Own and he definitely would have won only in trying to hit his own horse, Russell's whip kept hitting On His Owns face. Close up face on showed it and objection wasn't lodged because Willie didn't want to win it that way. True story
As far as Silvianaco Conte is concerned, I don't accept he was spooked, just that he doesn't quite stay the extra 2 furlongs. He was well beaten in Coneygree's Gold Cup, no matter what excuses Nicholls comes out with, after going comfortably till they came into the home turn.
Does anyone know why First Lieutenant was declared a Non runner. He has beaten Lord Windermere and Lyreen Legend twice this season in the Lexus, and the Irish Hennessy. Like Some of the other absentees like Captain Chris, Cue Card, Rocky Creek, would have surely gone close. On the Good ground i also think that some of the Ryanair chase horses like Dynaste, Boston Bob, Al Ferof & Rajdhani Express would not have been far away, given the chance to run in this Gold Cup.
on the channel four pictures (which you can see ion the c4 website /programmes/channel-4-racing/4od#3662532 at 2 50) first and second jockeys exchange pats on the back just after the finish, ATR pictures stay with the other horses finishing, also you can see the stewards enquiry at 3:00 at that link.
Why oh why oh why have I been stupid enough to have backed Silviniaco Conti this year? The more I look at the race in depth I believe it's between: Road to Riches, Djakadam, Coneygree and if the blinkers/headgear make a difference Bob's Worth. GL Y'all.
I guess I got caught up in the hype after Conti's last performance. Still 10-3 represents no value at all for a horse which (in all likelihood) won't win.
Conti has no chance IMO and definitely not worth backing at 3-1. I think it'll be between Road to Riches and Djakadam, had two decent sized punts on them.
Strange race the false starts didnt help things. Some of them were buzzed up before the race had even started. Best horse won on the day and Daveys cool head keeping out the back when they all wanted to push the pace. I dont think the form will stand up, the only things to take out of it are the good run from On His Own (who must go for the national now) and decent national warm ups for Teaforthree & Triolo D'alene.
If Conti wins this year I'll eat my hat . He has tried twice and got nowhere . The best horse i've seen so far is the Mullins horse Djakandam or however you spell it. They way he carried top weight in his last race and had time to fart in the faces of the rest of his field tells me he will be unbeatable come march with some sun on his back . Conti should be 5/1 to be placed and that isnt even good odds to me
Johnny Newton Conti has had 2 tries at the Gold cup and failed . Last year 3 horses went past him as if he was standing still with a 4 length lead into the straight . 25/1 sounds about right . Wont even back him at those odds , wont even finnish in the frame so whats the point.
Johnny Newton Conti 2 years ago fell when cruising and last year was suffering from stomach ulcers which have now been cured. He's stronger this year, in best form & will take a hell of a lot of beating in my eyes.
Johnny Newton Johnny boy , Conti will finish 4th or more , ok , maybe might just hang on to 3rd place in a photo , but horses that have tried twice at the Gold cup and failed have an almost impossible task of ever winning it. And im not talking about previous winners .Just look at Conti last year, hit the front turning in then popped , year before crap . The horse he beat in the KG hasnt won since . If Conti was 10/1 or 20/1 why shall i back him if he wont be in the frame........Again ! And dont include horses that have tried once and won , im talking about twice or more.
Please no hate reallly people IN MY OWN OPION number 7 to me looked in pain just in my eyes yes i know they wouldn't send a horse out in pain but he or she just ran like they were in pain
Certainly an odd race. Who would have thought that the first two over the last wouldn't be in the first three at the post? Still I think they were right to let the winner keep the race and I hope the connections of the second wont try to get it reversed in an appeal. I don't think that would be popular at all. they need to accept it. it happened and that's it.
No wonder Graham Wylie paid all that dough out to supplement On His Own to get in the race. Nice it of prize money for second. If gets round he'll go well in the National
would ya beleive, my reverse forecast of lord windermere and giant bolster was in tatters cause of on his own!! , weak show that year, will conygree show up this year??
First lieutenant was non runner cause he didnt eat up Well that was the offical story but his trainer is being investagated for using banded substances ie sterioids
