How did Mexico react to the Zimmermann Telegram? Barely. It's not like they could have done much.

One more thing that the video failed to address was that Mexico’s main arms and munitions provider was... the US. Mexico was not about to make a large arms purchase and make the US suspicious... Mexico could have also bought weapons from Argentina, but again such a large purchase that a war would require would immediately be known to the US and triggered a red alert.

It was better then Wilhelm’s plans to invade the US in the late 1800s. Concerned that the US would hamper Germany’s global influence, the Kaiser wanted to invade the US by landing troops on Long Island or in Boston, occupying New York, and marching to Washington to shell the capital. It was a brilliant plan, considering Germany didn’t have a navy capable of any of this.

Mexico was simply in no condition to start a war with the United States. They were kind of in the middle of a civil war that had already been going on for like 7 years, and would continue to go on until 1924. By the time of the Zimmerman Telegram, a lot of Mexicans were already dead, and their military was stretched way too thin as it was. And even if there hadn't been a civil war going on, Mexico successfully invading the United States to regain Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico would've been a long shot.

Well-put: It was a dumb move. Even if Mexico wasn't in the midst of a civil war, what was it going to do? Cross the border, take a few towns and wave their flags? The US would've killed every Mexican who crossed the line, took more towns, and basically repeated the Spanish-American War. And while America WOULD have been distracted and some soldiers killed, a LOT of Mexicans would've died, no territory would've been gained, he would've been ousted from power, and whoever was left would have a miserable time with the US. It wasn't just a dumb move but an irresponsible one. And what's the US going to do? Let some towns be invaded? I think not. Fighting a war of aggression is one thing, but defending American soil? Instant 100% war support against both Mexico AND Germany. Not going to war would have been political suicide for Wilson.
@malareon

at one point I wondered, what if the Zimmerman Telegram was never intercepted? I did some research and came to the conclusion that the war would last maybe a few more months but not much would change really, by the time America troops arrived the war was almost over already and America isolationism continues to be a thing until the attack of pearl harbor but all in all it was just about one of the most uninteresting alternate history research sprees I have ever done.
