Buxton Mountain Rescue Team were called along with other mountain rescue teams in the Peak District to assist the emergency services following heavy rainfall and a partial collapse of the dam wall at Todbrook Reservoir at Whaley Bridge in the Peak District in the UK.
Buxton team members along with members from Kinder Mountain Rescue Team set up a rope system using 2 x 100m ropes stretched across the top of the dam. The ropes were anchored either side of the dam. The Police special operations group placed sandbags on the top of the spillway to hold back the water that was eroding the downside wall of the dam whilst being secured to the Rescue ropes in case the dam collapsed under them.
The sandbags were filled and passed to the Police team by Peak District Mountain Rescue Team members from all 7 teams in a co-ordinated operation. This action helped in holding back the dam waters whilst the Fire Service pumped water from the reservoir.
In a quickly developing incident, team members maintained a presence in Whaley Bridge for a number of days assisting the Police and Fire and Rescue Services with a number of deployments associated with the evacuation of the village and the stability of the dam wall.
As the Todbrook Reservoir dam incident developed, water trained personnel were requested to be ready and stationed locally in case of a dam breach. Other team members took up station at control and at other advised locations.
As the risk of a dam breach continued, the Team were tasked by Derbyshire Police to knock door to door on an additional number of properties that had been identified as being at risk of flooding and needed to be evacuated.
Thirty two team members and 10 vehicles from across Peak District Mountain Rescue Organisation assisted with this part of the on-going incident.
Stopping the dam slip way being eroded using sandbags and the actions of the Fire Service pumping out the surplus water in the reservoir ultimately saved the dam.
