In this video, I delve into Rembrandt's artistic process, focusing on his use of the reed pen-a traditional tool for writing and sketching-to create drawings that are both dynamically fluid and emotionally expressive.

I love your channel! I am obsessed with the old masters. Can you talk about the windmill effect please!

I continue to believe that Rembrandt was probably the best natural draftsman who ever lived. It is the real thing, immediate and fresh, expressive, fluid, filled with light, space, and another extremely important quality: structure. We see the latter when he "corrected" or improved student drawings... just a few solid decisive strokes from the Master, and the student drawings were improved immeasurably! I appreciate this video, showing the effort to acquire bister ink and original style reeds. We quickly realize just how elusive and difficult it is to attempt to copy a Rembrandt. I will even say, impossible, because his talents came from within, and contained his idiosyncratic sense of light, form, and gravity. One of the best moment's of my life was the chance I once had to actually hold an unframed small Rembrandt sepia landscape drawing in my own hands! That chance doesn't come along every day!

I bought it from kremer too. My preperation, is usually just with cold water. Some people heat it up though. Any big soot particles sink to bottom of the jar, then I can pipette out the fine ink to a seperate bottle. If I want a darker shade of ink I will leave bottle open and let it evaporate. It works good even without gum arabic. It adheres very well to paper, I'm happy with it. I use it for drawing and combine it with watercolor too.

Thanks for sharing your method. I do boil the soot with distilled water as described by James Watrous from his book" The craft of old master drawings".

more reed , less brush ; lack of confidence is rectified only by practice & practice 'till you drop ; all in all you're good , close to very good ; I used a reed , properly sharpened - what they sent you ain't - since I was six , maybe close to seven years old ; now I'm seventy ; in short , bravo !

Hi, I'm a student studying art in Korea. I love your lectures. But it takes too much time to translate. So, can I know if there are any videos or paid lectures with Korean subtitles?

Thanks so much for this video,Luis! I hope to one day go to the Rembrandt museum! Also, were those actually Rembrandt’s chalks and quills on display that he used?

Thank you for commenting! The drawing displays at the museum were not the actual tools used by Rembrandt but historical recreations. The museum is well worth the visit.

Did you get the replicas of the historical quills from the Rembrandt Museum or did you make them yourself?

Hello: Thank you for commenting. I did order the pens from the Rembrandt Museum! I wanted to get reeds from northern Europe.
