The best philosophy of life - Buddhism, one of the world's most ancient and widely practiced religions, encompasses a rich tapestry of beliefs, practices, and philosophical traditions. Central to its teachings is the principle of compassion (karuna) and the commitment to non-violence (ahimsa), which have profound implications for ethical behavior, including dietary choices. Among the many questions that arise from Buddhist ethical teachings, one of the most debated is whether Buddhism prohibits the consumption of meat. This question touches on the heart of Buddhist practice, intersecting with the concepts of suffering, karma, and the path to enlightenment.
The diversity of Buddhist traditions across Asia has led to a variety of interpretations and practices regarding meat consumption. While some traditions, particularly in East Asia, have adopted strict vegetarianism, others, such as Theravada and Vajrayana Buddhism, allow for the consumption of meat under certain conditions. These differing practices reflect the adaptability of Buddhism to local cultures and environments, as well as the complex interplay between doctrinal purity and practical considerations.

It is not true that eating meat hinders the path to enlightenment. Buddha himself ate meat if it was offered, and his followers did the same, and those who practiced meditation properly did attain enlightenment despite eating meat. It will only hinder the path to enlightenment if a person ate meat for pleasure (attachment) rather than for sustenance (bodily needs), and if one seek out to eat meat for pleasure and attachment or asked for meat for enjoyment.

In Buddhism eating anything with lust is called eating meat. Also Buddha said millions of creatures are destroyed in farming.

@@saddha1 I am a Theravada Buddhist. I have never heard of that about eating meat meaning eating with lust. In Theravada Buddhism, eating meat is eating meat. Current system of conventional farming does kill millions of animals due to the use of pesticides, both directly and indirectly.

@@1xm_mx1 not just current, farming always killed millions of beings. This is mentioned in the Jatakas. Lord Buddha saw everything and kept MAghAta Mamsam- no killing on Uposatha days. This is for lay folk of course.

if an animal is raised ethically and with compassion, the middle way of common sense interpretation of principle, allows meat to be eaten with spiritual ethic....being alive one cannot escape perpetuating suffering by way of eating....

This is not true at all. This statement gives a wrong interpretation. Buddha did not allow tor forbade anything to be done by people. He only said that everything has consequences (good or bad). If someone wants to eat meat it invariably kills an animal. Killing beings is an unwholesome act. Therefore those who want to promote selling meat are twisting His preaching for financial advantage. Of course, He said one may not refuse to accept an offer even if it consists of meat products. Not, demand for it. In Metta prayer, He clearly says 'People should protect every living being just like how the mother protects her only child from harm'.
