The surname Douglas comes from a Scottish place name which comes from the Gaelic meaning ‘Dark Stream’. I’d guess the Manx Gaelg is the same (built by a dark stream) unless it’s named after a person called Douglas

It's a geographical term - a description - doesn't actually mean anything from a political standpoint.

It's not a term used in Ireland. Most people would consider it racist/colonist, the Anglo-Irish treaty simply says "these islands". Simply saying Great Britain and Ireland is preferable, but it depends who you ask

I'm sure that I only ever hear the term "British Isles" in geographical sense, as a physical description of the islands, and not in a political manner. For example, red deer are native to the British Isles. When describing the Islands in a political sense, (in their entirety) people would say Great Britain and Ireland - technically it'd be The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, but that's an unlikely mouthful If people are solely referring to Ireland they'd say the Republic of Ireland or Ireland if they're talking about the land mass. Considering British Isles to be racist/colonist is frankly bizarre, besides Irish isn't a race, any more than Scots, Welsh or English are races.

@Owen Hay Although I don't live in Perthshire, (I'm from Glasgow) I've always called Scone, as in the place, Scoon - just as Name Explain says. As for his pronunciation of scone being "sc-own" as in bone, the less said any that the better. It's a scone, "sc-gone" as you've stated.

Older people are more likely to view it as Birmingham but like I said young people will inherit the earth.

Col is a bastardization of the old celtic word for hill. Just like dun is the word for hill in gaelic(the tongue of the Scot's people). Edinburgh comes from E dun Burgh, which means fort on the hill.
