*face palm* The seven seas come from ancient greek literature, and they consisted of the Mediterranean sea, the Red sea, the Black sea, the Adriatic sea, the Caspian sea, the Persian gulf, and the Indian ocean. The phrase 'the seven seas' comes from the greek books listing off these bodies of water.

Well but you mentioned Indian ocean and a gulf Even if the greeks believed they were oceans and 7 is the number for perfection, it's still wrong! More accurate from a mathematical and geographical point is the 5 seas From a philosophical point, "7 seas" is more correct for the things the expression stands for, of course they "built" this expression to transmit the 2nd goal but it's still objectively wrong

The 'Indian Ocean' is called so because it surrounds Indian sub continent as mentioned in the Video. Also Probably in the ancient times, Sea vessels coming India for trade sailed through those waters to visit India and that is why they named it Indian Ocean. Indian ocean is called as हिंद महासागर (Hind Mahasaagar).
@theriam6281
@theriam6281 6 лет назад
O S Raikar no u are wrong..."Hind Mahasagar" is a very very new Hindi term coined by literal translation of the English term "Indian Ocean".... In ancient India, the Indian ocean was called by various names like इंदुसागर(Indusaagara), सिंधुसागर(Sindhusaagara), दक्षिणसागर(Dakshinasaagara), वैकुंठसागर(Vaikunthasaagara), etc.

That there is water beyond Gibraltar, was known way earlier than the Romans, though. The Carthaginians traded tin from the British Isles along the French and Spanish coast, and the whole concept of the Okeanos assumes that beyond the Pillars of Hercules, there was water. The Greeks just didn't have a reason to distinguish that ocean from any other.

they were the foundation of modern European and therefore Western nomenclature. As most other cultures never bothered to name the oceans the European names stuck. The Arabs had different names for the two sides of the Indian Ocean, but ended up just having the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal instead.

every culture has given it's own name to different geographical regions, but since Europe/English is dominant they all kind of chose to adapt the English nomenclature . for example the Nepali name of mt.everest is "sagarmatha" but even they don't call the mountain by that name anymore. it kind of shows you the power of English language.

I agree. England influenced the whole world, primarily because of their colonies. I hope that in the future, English will become the universal language. The younger generation doesn't really care about what language they speak, they just want to be able to communicate with others. That's why I think, languages will slowly fade away, and English will remain. Or I could be wrong, and nationalism comes back stronger than ever, lol.

you did a great job explaining all the names, bu there's one small discrepancy (which i see some others have mentioned). the Seven Seas doesn't refer to the oceans--it means different things depending on culture and time period (i looked it up to be certain and saw that there were more contexts for it) but in the Greco-Roman/Western sense it refers to the seven seas known to them--the Adriatic, Mediterranean, Black, Caspian, Arabian, and Red Seas and the Persian Gulf--with the ocean being counted separately from them. you CAN also count it as seven oceans if you divide the Atlantic and Pacific into North and South halves for each, but that's beside the point ;)

Great video! One point about the Atlantic, Pytheas and Euthymenes of Massilia sailed through the Straits of Gibraltar into the Atlantic in the 300s BCE. Pytheas' now lost book "On the Sea" was the first Greek text to mention Britain, Ireland, the Baltic, and the Arctic ice drift. That said, I don't remember if there was any mention of Pytheas referring to the Atlantic by that name.

Seas don't have to border or be defined by land. A sea can also be distinguished by currents, temperature, salinity, and a distinct ecology. The Sargasso Sea is located in the North Atlantic Gyre, and doesn't border any land. Despite this it is classified as a sea due to its distinct currents, composition, and unique lifeforms such as the free-floating Sargassum seaweed.

its seven because the atlantic and pacific can be split in two for each. the north atlanctic, the south atlantic, the north pacific, and the south pacific

I thought the seven seas referred to the seas the pirates sailed. Don't really know what those would be, though.

They're literally nothing alike, that's like saying Mali and Malta have similiar names, or why Gambia and Zambia are the same.

Monaco comes from greek 'Monoikos' meaning 'single house'. Morocco comes from the countries former capital city Marrakesh. Which comes from Amazigh 'amur akush' meaning 'Land of God'. According to wikipedia.

The pretty sure the term "sailing the seven seas" hark back to the era before ocean travel, and even beyond into antiquity. When the known world (known to those recording history in the vicinity of the Mediterranean) consisted of what was traversable, the bodies/sections of water in and around the Mediterranean, in that time. Similar to the "Seven Wonders of the World", over time as the known world expanded and changed our worldveiw, and our listings "seven seas" and "seven wonders" changed with it.

The medieval concept of the Seven Seas has its origins in Greece and Rome. In medieval European literature, the Seven Seas referred to: -the Adriatic Sea -the Mediterranean Sea, including its marginal seas, notably the Aegean Sea, Ionian Sea and Tyrrhenian Sea. -the Black Sea -the Caspian Sea -the Persian Gulf -the Arabian Sea (which is part of the Indian Ocean) -the Red Sea, including the closed Dead Sea and the Sea of Galilee

I suppose some people do split the Atlantic and Pacific into North and South, so perhaps that's where the seven seas thing comes from.

Our textbooks state that - 1. The Indian landmass has a central location between East and West Asia. 2. The trans Indian Ocean routes which connect the countries of Europe in the West and the countries of East Asia in the East. 3. The Deccan Peninsula (part of the Indian landmass) protrudes into the Indian Ocean, helping India to establish close contact with West Asia, Africa and Europe from the western coast and the Southeast and East Asia fron the eastern coast. 4. No other country has a long coastline on the Indian Ocean as India has. 5. It is India's eminent position in the Indian Ocean which justifies the naming of an Ocean after it.
