Zach Johnson, the “Millennial Farmer” is a 5th-generation farmer who’s spent his life growing, working, and learning on his family’s farm. His wit and dry sense of humor appeal to children and adults alike. A product of the millennial generation, his appreciation of new technology blends with his old-fashioned work ethic, and he offers a unique ability to deliver his message in a way that resonates with lifelong farmers as well as those with no knowledge of agriculture. With growing consumer awareness about where their food comes from, Zach has identified the need for an independent voice from the front lines of agriculture. Zach actively promotes agriculture by sharing his day-to-day experiences in the agriculture world while providing farmer-to-farmer education to help facilitate a collaborative conversation between farmers and the public.

My father had me picking rocks with a wheelbarrow, then taking them to fill in ravines and the bottom of the pond. Drove my mother nuts, he wouldn't 'waste' the gasoline to park a wagon up there for me to fill up, instead I wasted time walking the rocks back and forth with the 'barrow. He had....issues.

When we chopped grass for the cows, I drove the trailer. The wagon jumped off the hitch and the pullbar went straight into the cab in the 4455 John Deere. When i was a young fella about 13 I was towing a single axle wooden spray trailer home for lunch. Was half full. I looked back to see the trailer being dragged along by the pto pump hoses. The pin had jumped out. I was using a John Deere model.G. I stomped on the brakes which were great and the trailer prompty smashed into back of the tractor drawbar..it broke every cross joist in the trailer deck. My Dad just passed away on Sunday but he didnt rip me up. A short time later we rebuilt it together stronger with steel and a new deck. Fond memories and a valuable learning lesson.

I've had the same thing happen with a Lemken tiller. Hit a bump and it jacked the pin right out of the hitch. Luckily I was on the corner turning and was on the decelerator pedal when it happened and the safety chain caught it. I didn't have the clip in the bottom of the hitch pin then, now it doesn't run without it.

That exact thing has happened to me. retaining clip falls off, pin works its way up and out just enough for the trailer to fall off and then then pin "magically" drops back in. very irritating, I've gotten to the point I use a chunk of copper wire on the pin handle... but someone mentioned using a tarp strap for that. I have thought about welding a permanent clip onto the tractor side of the hitch that retains the pin handle.

My grandfather dumped all of hid field rock at the entrance across the road from the main drive to the house. Had a brand new hitch pin break on the crusher, only used the pin on about 10 acres. Brother lost the pull-type chopper, had the pin pop up enough for the chopper to fall off and then reseat in the drawbar. Which was more impressive since the pto shaft acted as a secondary safety pin, not sure what happened to the actual safety pin.

Thanks for an interesting video everyone. It was interesting and left you wondering what happened to the pin on the roller. Things happen. Appreciate the way the situation with the roller was handled. I agree with you Zach, I believe that pin came up far enough to let the roller come loose. You said the pin was gone. Explains the pin coming up. Sorry the hoses are broken and hose coupler on the tractor will need replacing. I really appreciate the way you handled things with Onyx. Am sure he does also. I had the pull type combine come loose and I caught holy you know what for a week. Things happen around farm machinery. Fix it and press on I always say. Crazy how those dogs get in the four by four. Amusing to watch. They love to ride. You all hang in there. Agree with your dad on keeping the planter going and double back to the roller situation later. You all take care and be safe. Hopefully you can get the roller going without too much expense and time fixing it. Once again, my compliments for handling the roller situation the way you did. The Iowa farm boy. Steve.

Same thing happened to me 3 weeks ago while finishing with high-speed Lemken disk. Good thing the safety-chain was on. Have enough issue as it is with the hydraulic couplers on the CHN. I'm gonna make my own hammer-strap pine-locker. Two tapped block welded on each side of the hammer-strap for grade 8, 3/4" bolts, to screw a 3/4" plate on top of the pine. And cut the pine flush under the bar for added measure. Some will say they don't like to hassle with bolt when hooking/unhooking (while they also loose their pine lol) Besides, who doesn't carry their Milwaukee impact with two batteries and a box set these days? Also, that could have happened on the road switching field etc. Those pine just raise up by themself with the tension and twisting, and strong enough to break the safety-clip.

Had something similar😢happen when pulling a Sanford disc. If there’s a little to no tongue weight or even negative weight when in the field position the pintle hook can work on the pin and pop it out. Putting a bolt with lock nut on the bottom of the pin(vs a clip) will prevent it from happening again

I had a cattle trailer pop off the hitch when I was about Onyx’s age. The land roller situation worked out much better than a wrecked trailer in a gully and a dead cow.

Well, I can say I've had exactly the same thing happen while rolling & another time I left the roller behind when the hitch itself came unbolted from the tractor? It's amazing even with good regular maintenance/check overs that something like that can happen. The pin incident had me bluffed too! (yes, I had a lock pin on the main draw bar pin! I never travel without them but somehow it come off & the draw bar pin must have jumped the same?)

Had that happen when I was running a disk luckily I just looked back when it happened. I ended up having to use a chain and to lift the tongue up and hook up

First time I’ve seen an implement come loose from the drawbar with the pin still in it!! You should check out the rock picker Larsens are using on a skid steer!!

Strap the pin in, I suspect it bounced up enough to let the hitch slide out, then fell back into place. Notice the spacer was out and undamaged too.

That's sounds like that's exactly what happened it jumped high enough for the spacer to fall off but the pin was just low enough to stay in the top of the hitch

Well, I give you props for maintaining composure. I’ve royally messed up some equipment in my younger learning days. Admittedly preventable as I was young and being stupid. My old man knew that as well. So he never held back.

My husband has had those stupid clips pop out before, so they devised a solution. They would always put a wire on the pin that would wrap around back around through the handle and the draw bar so it couldn't just pop out. Kept all the equipment from falling off. Sounds like other people have similar ideas. We look forward to seeing the rest of the video!
