The name Michoacán is not actually related to the ocean, it's actually refering to the lakes in the region, Michoacán has some of the biggest lakes in the country that sustained generations of the purépecha people

The fisherman origin is another posibility, considering the purepechas were the greatest aztec enemies they'd have a name for them. Also, fishing was very important for purepechas, but they fished in the lakes, not the ocean.

I'm pretty certain Michoacán comes from the Nahuatl word Michhuacan (mich-wa-can) whichs means place of fishermen. not that many Nahuas lived there, but the Spanish took their Aztec allies with them on the conquest and it was them who did most of the conquering

Also, Nuevo León is the only state that kept a version of the "New -something-" that Spanish used when founding places. Originally, the full name was Nuevo Reino de León (New Kingdom of León), but it changed to Nuevo León (New León) when it was accepted as a state in 1824. The main reason why is that Nuevo León didn't have permanent indigenous peoples, only nomadic tribes (some well known, like the Apache and Comanche), so it didn't really have any indigenous or historical name to be called. It probably could have taken the name of one of the big cities (at that time, Cerralvo, Linares or the capital city, Monterrey) as many other states did. Other such names that were lost are Nueva Extremadura (now Coahuila), Nuevo Santander (Tamaulipas), Nueva Vizcaya (Durango and Chihuahua), Nueva Navarra (Sonora and Sinaloa), and Nuevo Reino de Galicia (Jalisco, Colima, Nayarit, Aguascalientes, Zacatecas). Also, what is now Texas was briefly called Nueva Filipinas (New Philippines).

Tamaulipas before being accepted as a state in Mexico was briefly named "Territorio de Santander", then it was changed to "Estado Libre y Soberano de las Tamaulipas". And also, most northern states didn't really had native settlements either, Tamaulipas for example, only had a few on the south thanks to the land inhabitated by a few huastecos, and the rest of the natives were nomadic tribes, the most representative could be the janambres, wich got exterminated a whole time ago

I'm from Queretaro and actually, I was taught that Queretaro comes from the Purepecha native language which means "ball game" due to a ceremony practiced in many Mesoamerican civilizations. Also the word Puebla comes from a deformation of the word "Pueblo" which means town in Spanish.

Actually, Baja California Sur is the original california, then the territory that encompasses more or less the US states of California, Arizona, Nevada and Utah, they were called "Nueva (new) California", while the Baja California peninsula got renamed to "Vieja (old) California". They were later renamed to Alta (Upper) California and Baja California respectively.

No, the "State of Mexico" is a different federal entity from "Mexico City" and those are their official names, Mexico City used to be in the Federal District but not so long ago it changed its official name to Mexico City

« Spain » is simply the English transliteration of the French exonym _Espagne_ , which itself is derived from the Spanish endonym, España. (Sort of like the French for « Great Britain » is _Grande Bretagne_ ) So, it's really not... completely different 😕 (You're just not used to Spanish)

One important thing to mention: I don't get why you mixed the names of real places with that of a fictional place. Every Mexican worth their salt knows that there's not such a thing called "Tlaxcala". It's a wild bedtime story that nobody knows why our parents invented.

Hi! Fellow Sinaloan here, we are told in school that "Sinaloa" means "pitahaya redonda" where "pitahaya" is the name of the fruit and "redonda" is the descriptive form of the word "Round" so it would be "Round Pitahaya". The word "Sinaloa" is believed to come from the "Cahita" people who inhabited the land that today is Sinaloa. Loved the video, please keep up the excelent work

The basque language IS spoken both in Spain and France, regardless of the lack of official recognition as an official language by the french government. I personally have french basque-speaking friends. It has little to do with whether the Basque Country is, in fact, a country or not.

So... Hidalgo is quite a fun word, since it means "Son of something" (hijo de algo). It was, roughly, the equivalent to knighthood as I understand it. It was often given liberally (purchased, as a reward, that sort of very... uncorrupted (absolutely. yes sir.) stuff) and eventually got a bit out of hand.

The area of the U.S. California was called "Alta California" prior to 1847. In English it would be "Upper California" so there were two "Californias" in Spanish/Mexican eras: Upper & Lower. Later Mexico split Lower California into the current two states you mentioned. Oh, "Baja California Sur" directly translates to "Lower California South". I've always hoped that when the northern part of California separated from the rest of California, it would reclaim Alta California as its name. Also, King Louis IX of France is not the only king to be declared a saint. There is also a king in Spain who was declared a saint: Fernando XIII of Castile as well of León & Galicia. He is known as San Fernando Rey de España.

I noticed a few things about pronunciation, though you did pretty well, all things considered so I won't nitpick. It seems most Mexican states have a capital city with the same name, which is interesting though not all that surprising. Good episode!

Back when Mexico was a Spanish colony, some of those states were named after places in Spain (e.g. New Galicia > Jalisco; New Biscay > Chihuahua and Durango; Valladolid > Michoacán). As Mexico got independent, those names were changed (I assume it was to not resemble the colonial times) and I think the most logical naming pattern was to put the name of the capital.

Hey! Great video. Puebla in archaic Spanish means either people or town. The original name of the Capital city of the State was Puebla de los Ángeles, which translates as The Town of Angels (there is a legend that says that angels were the ones who lifted the ginormous bells of the Cathedral). As time passed people started dropping the Angels part and just got to be know as Puebla. Today the official name of the city is Puebla de Zaragoza (the Town of Zaragoza, after Ignacio Zaragoza who led a successful campaign against the invading French army in 1862) but is sometimes referred to as La Angelópolis (The Town of Angels, but now in Greek :v)

Durango city was founded by one of Cortez's lieutenants, captain Francisco de Ibarra, who, probably, had basque heritage and named the city after its river and springs found in a generally dry region.

Great video! Although Nuevo León's name doesn't come from 'lion'. It's true that 'león' is 'lion' in Spanish, but the name of the kingdom comes from 'legion', as its capital (also León) started as a Roman camp that grew into a town and then a city. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le%C3%B3n,_Spain#History

Puebla was never a fully "spaniard" city, or even majority spaniard, although that's how the elites of the city have framed it in the past couple of centuries. Some of the oldest neighborhoods of the city were completely indigenous. Analco was home to Mixtecs, Zapotecs, and Tlaxcaltecs, and Santiago de Rivera was mostly populated by indigenous people from Cholula.

@@Anton-V also all the members of the triple alliance had the word Mexico as a prefix: Mexico-Tlatelolco, Mexico-Tenochtitlan, Mexico-Tlacopan and Mexico-Texcoco (I know they are four but technically Tlatelolco was a vessel of Tenochtitlan) but also no to be confused with many highways and streets like Mexico-Tacuba, Mexico-Queretaro, etc.

The fruit at 4:05 is called Dragon Fruit in English. There are 2 types, one with white flesh inside and one with a dark maroon flesh. The peels of both types look the same. I personally love the maroon variety which is much sweeter than the white type.

Greetings from Veracruz. As far as i know, Puebla and Tlaxcala were a single territory before the conquest. Tlaxcala was where the allied natives lived, while Puebla is where the spanish inmigrants would live. Eventually dividing the territory into modern day Tlaxcala and Puebla favouring Puebla in size. Might be wrong, it's been a while since I studied mexican history.

The explanation for Puebla is a bit off. Though the origin of the word does mean people, the word Puebla comes from the feminization of pueblo, which means town, as the city of Puebla was a relatively small settlement when it began. At least that's what a tour guide told me when I went there a few years ago.

He forgot to mention that Durango State is the worlds capital when it comes to having Scorpions. There is even a Durango polka band called los Alacranes which is Spanish for Scorpion. Polka music in Durango tends to be played faster then in other northern Mexican states. Polka spread to Northern Mexico from the German communities in Texas. It can, but usually that isn't the case is Spanish. The land that is now the U.S. state of California used to be called Alta California; so together they were Alta y Baja Californiana (Upper and Lower California). After the Mexican Cession of 1848, California dropped 'Alta' from its official name, but Mexico's state of Baja Californiana kept their name. On that note, in other languages like German, 'lower' does usually mean that. The Bundesland of 'Lower Saxony' is further North than both Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, but is lower in elevation.

The "Lower" translation is more an indication of position in the map, rather than elevation, and while Baja _could_ mean shorter or of lower elevation in Spanish, it usually refered to geographical position in the place of a name. It's more related to the word "Abajo" like saying below the other california in the map

Just to further explain some names: Many, many of the religious-based names carry also info of the founding date of the place. For example, Veracruz. It was founded as the Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz (Rich Village of the True Cross) on Good Friday. Some other places would get the "San X" name based on who was the Saint of the Day when founded. There are exceptions, of course, but that was the trend of the time.

Some pointers re. pronouncing Spanish words: The letter H is typically silent (especially when it appears at the beginning of a word) and often serves as a stress-indicator on the vowel that follows it; When Y appears by itself as a stand-alone one-letter word, it's pronounced as long E would be in English; and two L's paired together sound like Y in English.

Until the reform in 2016 there was a provisión in the Constitución that if the Capital moved the then Federal Distric would be made into the the state of Valle de México literally Valley of México, then it gained spwcial status and it finally autonomy

Colima is actually named after a late mesoamerican kingdom of Colliman or his king, who Cortéz called the same. This comes from the Nahuatl Colímatl, which was the kings name. However, the people group called themselves the Teco, which is why a city in the state is called Tecomán :)

Puebla is a very common toponym in Spanish geography and it refers to towns founded or refounded in the base of a 'carta puebla' which comes from latin charta populationis which was a document that enabled a community to colonize an area in the Spanish reconquest
