That would be “podleskie” or “podleśne”. The name “Podlasie” means „by the Lachs”, “Lach” being a name for Polish people used by East Slavs. So this name was actually given by the non-Polish inhabitanta of the region.

My grandfather lived in Spalona Gura, Poland. Spalona means burnt, and Gura means hill or hilltop. Please correct me if I’m wrong. It was located just two or three km from the Czechoslovakian border. My dad and I visited Poland for six weeks in 1974. According to my dad, the filthy nazi, herman goering, owned a hunting lodge just up the hill, about halfway to the Czechoslovakian border. I’ll never forget the very tall fences at the border and a very tall tree line of pine trees so dense that even on a bright sunny day it was dark as night when I looked in beyond the fences. I was told that the area would end up under water due to a planned creation of a reservoir. That’s probably the reason I didn’t find that village when searching for it on the internet. Just like the rest of Poland, that area was beautiful. When traveling to my gramp’s, there were a lot of people enjoying what seemed like a national pastime, picking mushrooms. Btw if I remember correctly, after the Chernobyl incident, the people’s favorite edible mushrooms, prawdziwki, were mutated genetically, thereby becoming poisonous resulting in at least 100 deaths!!😑

@@krokodyl1927 your story sounds possible, but only thing I can confirm is that it's most likely spelled Spalona Góra (not Gura, that would sound excatly the same but I don't think search engine are considering that) and that could be reason that you can't find it

@@zefciu I cannot agree. Podlasie is perfectly good name for "by the forest" especially when we consider that name is historical and was made in old polish. For that claim I would bring conjugation of a Podlasie - Podlaskie. There is clearer split between "pod-" (by, near etc.), "-las-" (the forrest), and "-kie" (suffix of the Voivodships"

Rivers flow downhill, further up the river implies a higher elevation, so the two are equivalent, it has nothing to do with flatness though, so his take was a tad off there.

I made a very clumsy attempt to take exception to the statement in the video that "the reason this one [Lower Silesia] is lower is most likely due to the fact that the topography is low to the ground and the land is more flat in general." It does not necessarily follow that a place with "lower" in its name "is low to the ground" (which I presume means "has a uniformly low elevation"); or that "the land is more flat in general."

How Łódź got it name is hard to find out.. For children, versions about Janusz and sleeping under the boat are often presented. On the other hand, linguists agree that the version about the Łodzia coat of arms is incorrect. Most often, the name of the city comes from the threshing willow species (Łoza) that grows on the banks of the rivers of Łódź.

also, Łódź is pronounced woodge with the oo as in tool and the dge as in bridge

And also Varmia and Masuria the Mazuria part comes from word Mazury not Mazowsze.

@@ignacymichalski4871 Mazury and Mazowsze are from the same root. In the past, current Mazowszanie were known as a Mazurzy. Later, in XIX century, the name Mazowsze became much more common for today Mazowsze.

No. At this point of time Silesia is shared between Poland and Czechia. Germany does not own any part of Silesia anymore. And name for this region is definitively not Germanic.

@@janoczek6187 Goerlitz has been historically Lusatian, it was joined to German province of Silesia in XIX or XVIII century so it should be concidered as Lusatian

All old settlements between Denmark and Poland have Slavic names, that then was later bastarized by Germans, cause between 6th and 10th century Germans conquered and consequently genocided half of the western slavs. But killing multiple cultures took centuries so the names stayed, tho bastarized by their tongue.

@@equilibrum999 The dictionary would inform you that you are incorrect, then. The pronunciation using IPA symbols is /ˈvɔɪˌvəʊdˌʃɪp/ (British RP) or /ˈvɔɪˌvoʊdˌʃɪp/ (General American). The letter "e" is not pronounced, and you appear to have given a stress marking in the middle of a syllable.

I have no idea what a "stop symbol" is in phonetics, unless you are referring to a glottal stop, which is represented by the /ʔ/ symbol. But a glottal stop where you used /ˈ/ makes no sense in any dialect of English with which I am familiar.

Sometimes it's elevation, sometimes it's how close one area is to the mouth of the river (i.e. down the river, up the river)
