How Did Vesta Feel About Being Compared to Chaka Khan? 

I remember when Vesta use to hang out with a group called General Kane. I use to date one of the singers. Vesta was a lot of fun! We use to hang out after rehearsals. We all knew she was going to be a hit!! Her voice was was powerful! She was funny and didn't bite her tongue!! I was so happy for her win she got her solo record deal. REST IN PEACE VESTA!

Vesta can sing but the ear that Chaka has and the growth of instrument Is unmatched.

I feel they are pretty much even on their vocal esthetic...but chaka is a gifted natural singer with high range & power...& she still going strong today...she sounds even better since she first hit the scene...

I always thought they sound and look a like.... They both have power ful vocals and a lovely face. Rip Vesta 🙏🙏🙏🙏.

Why do some people think that Vesta is trying to take her " spot"? Its not a competition. Both of these women can sing the roof off a house. Its like if a person is gifted with similar vocal style, they're labeled as copying, stealing, and put down like less than. I love both of their voices. There's room for everybody.

The beautiful tangible gifts of both of the artists are treasures to this universe. Both artists and their own joyful instruments. That is the richness and blending interwoven licks of how music keeps on enlightening our senses and is truly eternal. I am thankful to have been alive and moving around on this planet and truly immersing my being in Both Chaka&Vesta's artistic gifts. My " DIVAS "

Vesta always hated that....But Vesta started out as a backup singer to Chaka ...So that's the reason....

It is always a sad situation when they always have to compare people, especially women black women we are unique in our own way. We are original everybody’s different. Nobody is the same.

Love it! Bro it's like you are covering my entire career! I literally toured with VESTA who became one of my best friends, Jody Watley and Janet Jackson... I was with Vesta when she opened for Peabo Bryson, I remember those comparisons and Vesta's response to them. I heard that "been to the school of Chaka but graduated" comment several times. LOL. Vesta was my heart, we were close and in communication up until 2 days before her passing. As far as comparing the two, Vesta was incredible like a Bentley but Chaka is unmatched like a Rolls Royce.

Honestly, I always thought it'd be more Meli'sa Morgan than Vesta to constantly being compared to Chaka.

Vesta didn't really find her own style until later in the 90s. Her later recordings don't sound as much like Chaka as the early years. In some ways Vesta was better than Chaka. Her enunciation was clearer and her phrasing choices were more appropriate. Chaka was more raw, so she needed great producers like Arif Mardin to hone her gift and steer her voice in the right direction. Chaka had more vocal range and was more agile than Vesta. Also Chaka is an original, so her creativity was unmatched. I still think Chaka was the overall better singer/artist. Vesta came out a bit too late. If she had debuted in the early 80s she might have had more success. Interestingly Chaka sort of fell off at the time Vesta debuted. That might have helped Vesta too, not having to compete directly with Chaka for airplay.

Vesta was influenced by Chaka greatly but I would not go as far as saying Vesta sounded like her. Vesta definately had her own sound that distinguished her from Chaka. There voices blended well but that was where the sounding like Chaka ended for me.

I think Vesta was once a background singer for Chaka.

I originally thought that her songs "#OnceBittenTwiceShy", "#SimethingAboutYou" (?) and "#DontBlowAGoodThing" were done by #ChakaKhan.

I felt like it wasn’t fair

Admit both sound somewhat similar but to say or even toy with the idea V more powerful ? In her day Chaka was a BEAST ! V had a great voice but Chakas a vocal abilities / arsenal .. she can sound like 10 different kind of singers . I have NEVER heard of any other with so many different kinds of abilities as Chaka . It is NOT her songs choices that make her a Queen of her gendre . No one literally does it better .

Vesta imitated Chaka to the T, if you ask me, she was trying to take her spot, there was no originality, she tried to duplicate every thing Chaka did, which is the reason I purchased every one of her albums, just saying(lol). She was great at doing Chaka, just like Tonni Smith (Jamaica Funk) .. Not mad, just making a point! Vesta is missed though and didn't really get the love her talent deserved, I think mostly, because there can only be one Chaka.. Chaka sings different now, still great, just more technical and polished, then when she was younger, but we still have Melisa who is another one who does a young Chaka really good, so I like listening to her and Vesta from time to time.. Especially that "Don't you know a good thing" That one right there is FIRE!!!!!! even now!!

it is NEVER a good idea on ANY level to be compared to another "artist" or "singer" especially in America because it can definitely "stunt" your talent AND your career even IF it might have a good influence on the career of somebody else's by "accident" it's never a good idea to be compared to somebody else because music producers become extremely selfish and close minded about it and they DON'T give you a fair or honest chance to establish your talent !! unfortunately this happens a lot more often than what people are willing and able to admit !!
