I've been in Japan for just under two weeks and I am having an unbelievably hard time to be honest. I knew a lot about Japan before coming here, I even had compiled a list of pros and cons in my head. I also speak some Japanese (only about N4/N3 level). None of the things I am finding difficult are new to me, but they are just plainly said, worse than I expected. I was so surprised to find exactly how expressly rude people are. I went out tonight for a meal at a small diner and even though I minded my manners to the utmost, it just didn't help. The owner/server was short, brash and rude towards me even though I was complimentary of everything he was doing. I feel like I am bending over backwards to stay out of the locals way and to be respectful and it's just not even helping. I've wanted to come here for so long and I thought I was prepared even for the harsh potential of the place, but unfortunately I am still shocked by just how unwelcome I feel. FYI I am here for work, not touring around etc. My company sent me specifically to come and assist our Japanese branch in Tokyo. I have 5 more weeks to go and I am going to keep putting my best foot forward, I just need someone, or anyone to give a little something back and to just show some humanity. Staying hopeful.

@@verreal honestly, I think a lot of it still has to do with Covid. A friend of mine who has been coming to Japan for years, reached out to some of his friends here, some locals and others being ex-pats. Asking them if they would show me around etc. All the locals pretty much responded the same way: "what company does he work for and why is he traveling already". In hindsight I would have definitely tried to push the trip back (not as easily said as done, since the Japanese business can't stand still). Either way, I have been keeping positive and I have found some really positive interactions as well.

Sorry to hear that, hang in there. Unfortunately a lot of people are dismissive of foreigners who aren't fluent in Japanese. It can feel very isolating. But from my experience people start to take you more seriously when you get to the N2/N1 level. Hopefully you'll get better treatment if you get another chance to go to Japan.

Wow, it seems like Tokyo is a different world from rural Japan where I live. Since there aren’t many HQs here, companies doesn’t really hire non-Japanese people for office-type jobs. It's a great video ! I really liked the range of questions you covered in these interviews.very informative. Arigato Gozaimasu for sharing ! Also, I agree with point of second person in the interview that you can't be prejudice that all japanese firms have typical japanese work culture. After i came to tokyo i realised that a lot of Japanese firms are now adopting a more flexible system, with less heriarchy and more serious about the working hours to not extend beyond 8 hrs. My own firm and even my other friends' firms have pretty much good and convenient work environment. So for other foreigners who are sceptical about the same, please don't be that much worried about this work culture, take a chance and come to Tokyo, you won't regret it...you are going to love it !

I'm planning to go to study at Kitakyushu for my master degree (space engineering) and maybe there is the possibility that I would work in Japan in the future, but outside Tokyo. So I'm a bit afraid of finding job in a "classic japanese society, with overwork etc.. Maybe, with space engineering that is a soo advanced environment, I can hope for a more "western"/uropean oriented society, but I'm still afraid for it T_T

If one has a teaching degree in any subject try applying to the many international schools world wide. They operate just like any English speaking private school. The schools take good care of their teachers and you can stay for years. I did and it was a blast. Like the Google guy I did not use Japanese in my work day.

If you obtain a teaching license from a Japanese university you could get a full-time salaried position at almost any jr.high school or high school throughout Japan. It took me 15 years to become literate enough to be able to take a full course load in Japanese, but it was worth it. I was promoted from my ALT position to full-time teacher and my salary tripled! A teaching degree from a foreign country is non-transferable for a full-time position at a Japanese school. International schools are an exception.

Usually, you use Japanese to apply even for jobs like teaching English in a university. You have to accomplish the paper works in Japanese. I think the Japanese employer does that to somehow gauge the foreign applicants Japanese proficiency. Because even with teaching university classes in English, you still need Japanese to fill out forms, talk to your colleagues, and do administrative stuff...

Love your videos, Takashii! One small thing I’ve noticed a couple times: sometimes audio is hard panned left or right (mono instead of stereo). Not sure what software you use to edit 😁 but in premiere pro you can set clip channel format to stereo on mono clips before importing them to the timeline to get both left that right audio channels.

As a French person, I could feel the Frenchness oozing from the Congolese girl. She was probably raised in France haha!

As a Japanese who grew up overseas I find it very hard to suit/assimilate to the corporate culture here. I’m often being labeled either as a “returnee”, “American”, or “Japanese” but my Japanese colleagues seem to apply those labels in the way that is convenient for them. I cannot but to feel like I have to abide by the shifting labels and it is very draining. It’s been about 3 years since I started working full-time in Tokyo but I feel like I’ve lost who I was and I have hard time enjoying anything really because I’m just super exhausted.

I think it is kinda sad that most of the people from abroad don't seem to know Japanese very well. I can't imagine living in a country of which I don't or barely know the local language. だからもう日本へ来る前に日本語を勉強します。

Wow, vastly different experiences for different industries. Japan has a dire need for IT/Tech professionals that can easily get a sponsorship with just N3 level, while all other industries (except English teaching) are expected to have N2/N1, and follow all Japanese work rules.
