What was it like for Irish immigrants who made the big move to America more than 100 years ago? We visit the Ulster American Folk Park in Northern Ireland to find out! Curator Liam Corry guides us through recreations of places where the first Irish immigrants lived - along with checking out one of the ACTUAL homes!

I am not Irish (I am Ukrainian Jewish) however I have always had much respect for the Irish (and their descendants). Like many other immigrants in the New World The Irish were treated terribly even within their own homeland, the land of their father's and forefather's. I support Irish independence referendum. I have visited Ireland twice and I have always admired the beauty and scenery.

I am half Ukrainian Jewish and non Jewish German. I always wondered why people say that I look like this or that. When do I get my right to have my own identity? I am also part Irish. It was my great grandmother. I would say that she had a good life. I miss her. She was full of love. I don’t understand why people act mean like Irish people acting like I am their enemy. Weird. And being nice to everyone else

Vanquish. You can be Ukrainian Jew and Irish descent. I just found out that I am 40 percent Irish and 49 percent Ukrainian Jew. Yes. i know that Ireland is green and has great food. And great dancing. In the United States, it is like we took over here. Maybe because we are Catholic and don't believe in abortion.

Irish and Scottish people mixed with the Italians and they all start speaking English among themselves and a new accent of English language is created to join the cockney, Brummie and West Country is the all new American accent,

My great great grandfather came from Ireland. Because of our name he was vague about his background. He’d lead people to think that he might be a Scot. He was lucky to marry into a family of New England English Puritan heritage.This grandfather was able to inherit the family farm, then go on to establish a decent sized dairy business.

I'm 4th Gen highland Scott (from highland refugees) and mixed with ulsters. I was not aware at all of my Irish side because of lack of records but I finally closed the gap when some popped up with no record from Ireland. At that time they were under severe persecution by England and smuggled into ships anyway anyhow. Many arrived by smuggling in and uniting with family not for a "better life" but protection by numbers....

It's nice to see there's still Irish nationals who acknowledge Irish Americans in a relatively neutral to somewhat positive light. If you spend basically anytime on the internet that relates to Irish stuff you run into a lot of excessively unpleasant Irish nationals who aim a lot of hate and nationalistic sentiment at Irish Americans.
@UntappedShesources

Yes I have encountered this ugh I am beginning to learn Americans of “Irish” lineage are a much more lovely bunch lol but the Irish nationals who are kind and welcoming warm my heart like no other❤ The nasty angry Irish nationals I have encountered have just made me realize that although I am interested in my family history and where they came from where my ancestors were from I should perhaps just embrace my American culture as is and appreciate it a bit more than I already do.

My grandfather's family emigrated from Ireland to Boston during the famine. He told me about the "No Irish need apply" signs all over Boston. He said the Irish competed with black people for domestic jobs, and that caused the black people to dislike the Irish, as domestic jobs were among the few jobs open to them. I have no doubt the Irish didn't treat them well, either.

Thanks to both of you. Not all Irish people who went to USA were poor. Some went for opportunity. The nice guy in the hat who is from West Virginia, have you heard of Monsignor Thomas Aquinas Quirk? He is my Grand Uncle. He served in the Union army. He went to Paris, became a Catholic priest, even though born a Protestant . Look at The Padre of the Mountains. Be good Joe

Can a valid argument be made that, on immigrating to the United States, race prejudice gave Europe's serfs targets on whom to feel superior? I do recall my landlord, who happened to be of Jewish religious faith, said to me that the immigrants were instilled, starting at Ellis Island, with the belief black Americans were the "dregs" of society. That prejudiced might have taken hold with so many African Americans having Celtic surnames, e.g., Ella "Fitzgerald," and so forth.

. The Black slaves also had worth to their owners. They could be bought and sold. And were of value. The Irish were not. Thomas Sowell has an amazing video on this topic.

My Father had a dead rabbit tattooed on his shoulder, told me it was ouribe. Personally I think he was full of shit, but that was the first time I`d heard. I think that was around 1970 when I ask him about it. Then when the movie Gangs of New York came out I remember my Father told me my great grandfather came through there when he emigrated.

Ohh piss off with the race baiting. You're ancestors enslaved your ancestors and sold them to European buyers.... Plus learn your history, Arabs and Africans enslaved while Europeans back in the day. Norwegian Vikings enslaved the Irish. Get over it, its history, and it has many pages other than the single page black folk endlessly repeat
