Thank you Paul and thanks to Brendan. I have been accused of posting alarmist comments regarding "Drone to Phone" proposal. Paul put my concerns to Brendan very succinctly about anyone being able stalk and "jack" a pilot on location. Brendan even mentioned the opportunity for a commercial rival to abuse this system. I'm sure Drone U will give us more information in December when comments open on this proposal so that we can become part of the discussion in a more organized and impactful way.

What about ALL sUAS? DJI does not speak for the community. They speak for themselves. If any organization speaks for the community it should be AMA with over 75 years of safe skies. DJI is a Chinese company. Who do we want to represent us?
@VicMossPhotography
@VicMossPhotography 4 года назад
It's obvious you did not listen to the podcast or you wound't ask this question. Brendan states quite clearly DJI isn't speaking for the community. Any more than AMA should be speaking for the community. AMA does not represent the commercial UAS pilots out there. I have no doubt they'll put out a memo to their members. And they should. But based on past memos, it will likely be something along the lines of "leave the hobby industry alone". That's the drum they've been beating since 2012. And that is a huge shame too. They were poised to be THE UAS voice in the U.S. But their "drones suck" attitude out of the gate dug themselves too deep of a hole to get out of. I know they're trying now, but it's too late. The UAS community has zero confidence in the AMA to speak for us. I'm predicting now that the AMA letter going out to it's members will include a copy and paste complaint (that does no good), and will basically say that hobby planes have been flying longer than the FAA has been around, and have a stellar safety record (all true), but then they'll say because of that no hobbyists should have to comply with RID. So they'll end up wasting not only the FAA's time, they'll end up wasting the time of their members who really should just educate themselves and each make a well thought out and educated comment after December 20th. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm probably not. The AMA has a very poor track record of helping when it comes to UAS legislation.
@rich500

I'll take DJI. They are lobbying congress in our interest. AMA wants us to be able to only fly at their approved sites, after we pay dues to a club and them.. Money talks, AMA walks.
@kennyfoss8389
@kennyfoss8389 4 года назад
@@VicMossPhotography Sorry you are wrong. I DID watch the entire interview. You can speak up for ALL commercial pilots. I speak up for the hobbyists. AMA has rules of flight for ALL its members...hobbyists. I fly only quads in my club. So don't for one moment think I am a fixed wing pilot, but my friends do fly them. DJI would like to speak for everyone so they can rule the quad world. Why do you think they sent you a FREE MM? They want their way or the highway. You are being bribed to follow them like a lemming. Sure they will put some device on their quads to ID their product to the detriment of all other manufacturers. Dominate the market. The LAANC system does work. You use it more than likely and so do I. We don't need any more means to ID ourselves. One last thought. The horse (quads)is out of the barn and no amount of rules are going to stop the rule breaker. If someone wants to do their own thing, they will. So legislate and penalize all us sUAS folks for the guys who don't give a crap about the rules.
@VicMossPhotography
@VicMossPhotography 4 года назад
@@kennyfoss8389 If you watched the video, I guess I'm confused why you would say that DJI is speaking for the community. They obviously aren't, and know the futility of trying to do so. There are plenty of other manufacturers, albeit none as large as DJI. They are also developing their RID systems for when (not if) that rule goes into effect. And they didn't send me a free MM, they sent one to Paul. I have my own that I bought with my own money. I rarely review products that are given to me. I can think of only one instance in the past. As far as flying at an AMA field, maybe that's one of the exemptions for the need to use RID? As a matter of fact, that's probably a darn good idea. Suggest that in your comments on the NPRM. And yes, we do need more means to ID ourselves if we're flying outside an AMA field. It's a logical condition, and one that is in the works. Wishing it away is an exercise in futility and frustration. Let's take a possible project I'll be doing next summer. I may be flying and covering parades. And if I get my 107.39 waiver, I'll be doing that over people. Supposed someone else is doing the same thing, yet doing so illegally? How is an LEO going go differentiate between my safe and legal flight, and someone else's unsafe and illegal one? RID will do that. You shouldn't equate legislation with penalization. They're not necessarily the same thing. Flying in the NAS is a privilege, not a right. And there need to be safeguards and rules to do so (just like AMA has at their fields). RID is just one aspect of that system. And I will agree with you that no amount of rules will stop the rule breaker. By definition they won't. So that isn't even part of the logical discussion here. Rules are like locks, they only apply to those willing to follow them. But without any rules and laws, it's anarchy. There is no perfect system out there. But we should never let perfect be the enemy of good. RID is a good and workable system. We as a community just need to make sure it's a viable one for both the hobby and commercial sides of this industry.
@stephencarlson6297
@stephencarlson6297 4 года назад
@@VicMossPhotography That you are flying at an AMA field or not should not be a differentiating factor for if you must have RID or not, to do so would essentially turn the AMA into an arm of the government (which is what they seem to want, let's them wield a weapon to force membership). I'm not in favor of RID, not just due to the asymmetric burden of having to be implemented on both hand-build R/C plane verses mass-produced drone, but also that it sets a precedent that all other forms of aviation must also be so "tagged". You are essentially pushing for Ultralights, Skydivers, Powered-Paragliders, Hang Gliders, model rockets, balloons, kites, and everything else to have RID. That the vehicle is caring a human or not is irrelevant; let both manned and unmanned aircraft use the same airspace, the differentiating factor in if required to use RID should only be the classification of the given airspace being utilized. I'm flying in Class G: I'm not doing RID.

In the end if we are subject to this all aircraft must be subject, which is not the case now. Balloons and powered parachute aircraft are not even restricted with an agl. These aircraft are flying in drone airspace Class G. Also this a pipe dream of crying security. No terrorist is going to subject himself to this plan. This will ultimately result in pilots having to get a permit to carry for self protection.

Balloons and powered parachutes are easy to find and track. Drones aren't. That's the issue for RID and drones. People need to know who is in the air, and RID will give them that option. But, and this is very important, it can't give people instant access to the location of the pilot. That needs to be reserved for those with a legal and compelling need to know.

Remote ID should only broadcast the serial number of registered drones. All around the world we are having to register our drones to get autorization to fly with them. If someone is doing something they are not suppost to be doing, the drone police could get the app, retrieve the drone registration ID, acess the drone registration database for that country and get the pilot information. If the drone is not registrated, then it should broadcast the drone pilot location because he is doing something ilegal ( I don't agree, but if we need to registrate it to be able to fly and we are not doing what the law says, then we would be doing something ilegal, right? )

Exactly. There is no personal info broadcast from VFR manned aircraft while squawking 1200. In fact, the FAA will say that low flying drone transponders would not even be picked up by ATC. The FAA discusses that all of this is being done to integrate UAVs into the airspace plan. Yet, drones and other UAV are currently segregated to the lower 400 feet, and neither system for ID and location will produce location data that will be made available to the air traffic controller responsible for the airspace where the UAV is being flown in real time. So what is the real purpose of all of this? It is not to make the airspace a safer place using the proposed system. If there are over 400 people killed each year in General Aviation accidents (many on the ground) and this has been the trend for at least 10 years and the FAA does nothing to improve these statistics, then by definition, the loss of 400 people a year to General Aviation accidents is below the threshold of concern. Yet, there is not one proven case of a UAV killing anyone in the past 10 years and the FAA is going bats to solve the safety problem that does not exist. And anyone believes that the FAA is going to consider our input? The die is already cast, but if they are overwhelmed with comments, it will take them longer to wade through the comments and that will give all of us more time before we have to scrap most of our current drones that will never meet the requirements. There are 1.5 million recreational flyers and another 500,000 107 pilots. If everyone files, someone might get the message.

People on community web sites have made the statement that they will shoot down any drones over their property. ID the pilot and where does the FAA think that might lead. ID bad idea. Also, the data goes into a data base. If the drone is a couple of hundred feet over the altitude allowed, the data supplied to the data base could be self incriminating which brings up Constitutional issues regarding the right not to self incriminate. Will the police officers be trained to the level of a 107 pilot so they are aware of all the complexity associated with a flight, like a drone pilot is on an photo flight 3 miles from the airport with a waiver. I think that turning Barney Fife loose with a receiver is going to create some real problems, unless Barney holds a 107 certificate and fully understands how the drone is being operated and that it is legal. 802.11 technology has its origins in a 1985 ruling by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission that released the ISM band[1] for unlicensed use. In 1991 NCR Corporation/AT&T (now Nokia Labs and LSI Corporation) invented a precursor to 802.11 in Nieuwegein, the Netherlands. The inventors initially intended to use the technology for cashier systems. The first wireless products were brought to the market under the name WaveLAN with raw data rates of 1 Mbit/s and 2 Mbit/s. Vic Hayes, who held the chair of IEEE 802.11 for 10 years, and has been called the "father of Wi-Fi", was involved in designing the initial 802.11b and 802.11a standards within the IEEE.[ The segment of the radio frequency spectrum used by 802.11 varies between countries. In the US, 802.11a and 802.11g devices may be operated without a license, as allowed in Part 15 of the FCC Rules and Regulations. Frequencies used by channels one through six of 802.11b and 802.11g fall within the 2.4 GHz amateur radio band. Licensed amateur radio operators may operate 802.11b/g devices under Part 97 of the FCC Rules and Regulations, allowing increased power output but not commercial content or encryption. The major commercial breakthrough came with Apple Inc. adopting Wi-Fi for their iBook series of laptops in 1999. It was the first mass consumer product to offer Wi-Fi network connectivity, which was then branded by Apple as AirPort.[8][9][10] One year later IBM followed with its ThinkPad 1300 series in 2000.

It’s becoming too much of a hassle to fly drones. I’m really thinking of selling my drones
@okanaganpeterjames

All human beings are tracked from birth. Drones allow people to see the world literally as free as a bird. Government needs to tie the drone to their person and be able to track where it goes because that's what the government does. Even if it is free they will charge drone pilots a monthly fee as well.

Very Dangerous !! Out flying on my own with £1000.00 equipment If my location can be seen by Jo Public this is Ideal for the Thugs and against Drone hunters

People are so paranoid. Just have the drone transmit a license number and be done with it.

If they start charging fees, I'll be selling my drone. I don't fly it all that much and its just for fun and I follow all the FAA rules.

the FAA (and similar equivalents around the globe) needs to have an OPEN Forum for feedback by the users. Having OEMs who will benefit from future 'requirements' is a self-licking ice cream cone . . . they will continue to make requirements that they can make money on.

That is what the public comment period for the upcoming NPRM is for. Make sure you make your voice known when that comes out.

Moss Photography that for the US. what about us guys in the EU? Or should we wait until the FAA decides, and then, in a typical EU way, just copy the American model... and by doing so, violating our just introduced, brand new (and good) data privacy protection laws 🤷🏻‍♂️

Moss Photography is that the only song your radio plays? „That’s not what this podcast is about“? 🤔😅 you answer that quite often here. This podcast is EXACTLY about that. It’s a very sensible topic, it raises many good questions. And it shows how poorly some parties involved in this act (wink wink DJI) If you wanna be uncle sam‘s favorite good poppy, feel free to do so. But let those of use who think outside the box make comments, share opinions and ask questions. Thanks 👍

@@apokalypseAATT not sure what you mean, but the podcast was talking about FAA rules. Which by the way, are very similar to EU rules. You can belittle us all you want, but if you're familiar with what we do at Drone U, you'll fully know that we are not Uncle Sam's favorite good puppy (whatever the hell that is). I've found over the years when someone runs out of viable arguments they tend to resort to name calling. I guess that's what your'e doing above. Opine to your heart's content, but we have no plans to discuss EU policy in the near future. Maybe when ICAO gets it's act together and we get cross-border regulations, but it's unlikely until then.

Let people just enjoy their hobby, without interference from the Government. How many drones have killed people so far and how many guns are being used daily to kill people? And yet they are NOT banned??? Only in the good ol' USA

I don’t think just anyone should be fine location of the operating operating most of the time something that’s a couple thousand dollars with all your equipment which is Rob from you with someone that just has a cell phone and sees it and Wants to steal it was some crazy unhinged person I think you were spying on them because they saw a drone because that’s what most of society’s thoughts are they see something up in the sky and buy them automatically there you go is always looking at me or we could care less about that it might be a couple of freaks out there but maybe there’s a license that they can report it to the police and the police can look up where the person is an approach them and see where they flew

So the DJI salesman thinks that remote ID is a great thing. Of course he does....his company has built a solution for a problem that doesn't exist. They need to convince and tell people there is a huge problem, so they can sell their solution.

I don't have a problem with law enforcement, and government, having this information. The problem I have is some nut job being able to come to my location, as I'm flying, and take their paranoia out on me. False accusations will become rampant. This guy is talking through his ass. DJI is a willing participant in kicking the hobbyist out of the sky. They want the big business and government contracts, not some weekend flier. Time to put the Phantom 3 4K on eBay and tell DJI to kiss our hind parts. I may even be nice and take a shower beforehand!
