Dave you are my favorite writer for Simon's channels by a long mile and seen this demonstration just made me appreciate even more the work you do 😁

I am here from watching Simon. I am interested in how you do things as my grandmother has Macular Degeneration, which is rampant in my family. I am getting older and my eyesight is not the best. So I have tried to make sure that if I do end up like my dearest grandmother, I know that I can still have some sort of functionality and at the very least keep myself entertained. Cool part about my very old grandmother's situation, is that she was given several weeks of "blind school" where she was taught how to handle her self as her eyesight faded so she was able to see long enough to learn how to cook, rent audio books from the blind library, be able to use her phone, and basically be able to still have a full life. My father moved in with her to help her but he doesn't need to stay with her all day, he is able to work and have his own life and is there because well, she is old and old people should not live all alone anyway, more so if they are beloved family members. I have spent some time there at her house, and it is amazing that they taught a very old woman how to use technology, when before she couldn't even change her facebook settings without a 4 year conversation. So I am massively impressed with how far the world has come. I am glad that you have a full life, and great job, and do very, very, good at your job. Thank you for sharing how you do things, I find it very informative. I just gotta know one thing, do you and Kevin have to share the basement rations or do you guys fight it out for who gets whatever is thrown into the basement feeding slot? I like to give Kevin a bit of crap when he is writing for Simon, so you get to have some fun ribbing as well. Have a great day or whatever it is when you read this comment.

Im also disabled, but I'm in America, It's a pleasure to be able to learn more about the voice over features especially from someone who so critically depend on accessibility apps, I'm fortunate enough to not have my disability to effect my physical form, I'm stuck with major ADHD & other learning "disabilities"; typically I prefer the term "dis-advantaged" it doesn't stigmatize things as heavily. Your writing for Simon is some of my favorite, so it's cool to learn more about how you navigate technology and how effectively it works. Hey Dave! Love your scripts. I always am fascinated by your anecdotes and would love to see more videos about how you doing things that I’m sure you know would shock most of us sighted folk. Hopefully that reads as curiosity from someone who has never personally known anyone who is blind and not as super insensitive and wanting to almost “fetishized” the fact that you are blind. Anyway, I’ll continue to look forward to your new scripts!

I never really knew about the voice over function! I’d been aware that it exists, but I’m quite shocked to see that it just narrates over the same graphic user interface shown as standard, instead of adapting the formatting to be more intuitive to navigate by sound. Now that I’m thinking about it, I’m imagining a sightless interface where the formatting of a page is broken down into being able to click on a box in a grid (possibly with the aid of a textured screen protector?) to go to a specific function. Like, if the iPad screen was divided into a 4x6 grid, the screen to write an email could look like: top left corner=back to previous page, one to the right would be “send to”, the one below that would be CC/BCC, then below would be the subject line, and then probably in the top right corner have a box to enter the message by typing, below that by speaking, and then another box would allow for attachments, etc. But, there’d always be a dedicated square (like double tapping bottom right?) dedicated to switching to the standard graphic interface, like if you were to be sharing the device with someone sighted 🤷🏻

Hi Dave, I have a question. I have aphantasia, as in i can't see things in my mind. How does your imagination affect your life and if a blind person also had aphantasia would it make a meaningful difference to how they operated? Sorry I know that's a bit of a weird question but i'm very fascinated.

My vision is pretty good when compared with yours. It sometimes worries me that I'll grow blind in my old age because there's just so much more effort that goes into that. It must take you forever to accomplish a task that takes us sighted viewers mere seconds. I can though type, however. So, I have that going for me. I'd end up using a computer because of that, probably... Either way, your work is awesome and appreciated.
