How Do Calvinists Get it So Wrong?

Referring to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, John Calvin said, "Satan blinded nearly the whole world with a most pestilential error" and called it "an unbearable blasphemy and dishonor is inflicted upon Christ." John MacArthur, a popular Calvinist preacher, claims the Mass blasphemes Christ and perverts His work on the cross. Calvin and his followers consistently claim that the idea of the Mass as "sacrifice" is an invention of the medieval church, perhaps sometime between the sixth and ninth centuries. Yet, from the Didache to St Augustine, and every ecclesiastical writer in between, refutes this ludicrous claim.

@@user-fi1pe4dg3u The Word of God is the Bible. It may surprise you to know that we created the Bible through The Council of Rome in 382AD. Pope Damasus, inspired by the Holy Spirit, declared the 73 book Canon as "Divine Scriptures" or Word of God. That's why all Christians believe it is. It is worth noting that Pope Damasus is the one who designated the 73 book collection as "Byblos", or small library, a word which was also the name of a Phoenician city on the coast of Lebanon, the commercial center for papyrus at the time. Thus our "Small inspired library" in Greek, remained known as "Bible" because of the 37th successor of Peter, Pope St. Damasus. May God bless your discernment.

John MacArthur is consumed by hatred for the Church and the Mass. Two of the greatest graces and gifts Our Lord grants to us while we undertake this pilgrim's journey to eternity, and he mocks, insults, blasphemes, and lies about them, constantly. I will grant him one thing though. Unlike the proverbial incessantly smiling, happy, upbeat megachurch pastor, he really does personify the anti-catholic rage of Calvin and Luther quite well. If this was 16th century Europe and he had an army to follow him, one could imagine him defiling and burning every single Catholic church he came across. Anyways, his time in this world is limited. Protestants and people who reject or blaspheme against the Eucharist knowingly will be judged by the Lord very severely as they literally commit the very 1st commandment by denying and rejecting God. The devil did the same thing and that’s how he ended up in hell. The holy sacrifice of the Mass was instituted by Jesus himself at the Last Supper as the apostles were told to “do this in memory of me,” meaning “of Jesus.” Let’s all pray for the conversion of blasphemers and may they open their hearts to learn and accept the fullness of the truth.

Check out Brad Pitre' videos. He provides the Jewish context at the time of Christ. The Last Supper (Holy Thursday) is celebrated in the context of a Jewish Passover. "Do this in remembrance of me" in light of the Passover means to make oneself present to the first Passover with loins girded to start the exodus from Egypt to the promised land. The Jews are re-presenting the 1st Passover with the sacrificial lamb as a foreshadowing of Christ's sacrifice. Context is everything. Looking at the Eucharist with today's perspective could be diluted to having to wait 5 minutes in a McDonald's drive through. Blessings to you.

Transubstation wasn't even a doctrine/dogma or practice until the 12th Century. Resacrificing or Representing the sacrifice of Jesus to impart grace is not a biblical concept in the New Covenant. The work on the cross is completed already. Communion is a remembrance of Jesus. John Chap 6 is allegorical otherwise, the 5000 would have immediately killed Jesus and consumed him. How do they get it so wrong? You have to understand the current status of many Protestant organizations as the end result of an evolutionary process: 1. To justify the ongoing existence of your organization, it must have a reason for not being Catholic; 2. Any person who isn't persuaded of the reasons your organization isn't Catholic will _leave_ that organization and become Catholic; 3. Over time, the persons who remain in your organization are self-selected to be persons who're most-persuaded of the reasons to not be Catholic; 4. A group of persons who're self-selected for not being Catholic will naturally live in an epistemic bubble, repetitively rehearsing to one-another their reasons for not being Catholic; 5. Over time, such a group gradually intensifies all the reasons why they, and the organization, aren't Catholic; 6. Anyone calling the reasons for not-being-Catholic _overly_ intense will strike existing members as having dubious loyalty to the group, and will be shuffled out of having teaching authority within the organization (even if they don't leave); 7. Rinse, repeat; rinse, repeat; rinse, repeat; rinse, repeat; rinse, repeat; rinse, repeat.... Through sheer organizational dynamics, we can _easily predict_ that any organization which drifts away from Catholic unity will latch on to any topic where Scripture or the Patristic Witness are ambiguous, announce their own view over-and-against the Catholic view, and describe the Catholic Church as "satanic" or "blasphemous" for not holding the schismatic group's view. This is predictable because it's how human organizations act, in an evolutionary way, to preserve the ongoing existence of the organization. It's why MacArthur says the stuff he says. It's why Luther called the pope the Antichrist. It's why Jack Chick had a career. It's why the non-Christian Jewish persons of the second century had to invent stories that Jesus' real father was a Roman soldier, or that the disciples stole the body. It's why Photius hurled such hilarious lists of accusations against the Church: Azymes and whatnot. Organizational dynamics predicts all these claims. It doesn't predict their specifics (that the Roman soldier would be named "Panthera," or that Photius would say it was evil for Latin-Rite clergy to not have beards!!!) but it predicts that the defenders of such organizations would hurl any-and-every illogical accusation at the Church hoping _something_ would stick, so as to justify the ongoing existence of the dissenter organization itself.

Catholic: “Luther and Calvin departed from the early Church and rejected the Eucharist as a Sacrifice” Protestant: “No they are reforming the Church to the beliefs of the early Church. That doctrine is not found in Scripture nor in the Fathers until 6th century” Catholic: (lists quotes from numerous Fathers in the first four centuries calling the Eucharist a “sacrifice” in the most Catholic way) Protestant: “…I don’t care what the Fathers say. I go by the Scripture” Catholic: “Then at least admit that the early Church is Catholic” They can’t do it. Because the moment they do, the complex doctrines on the diety of Christ, the two natures of Christ and the Trinity, which the Church clarified during this time, by many of the Fathers mentioned in this video, are thrown into question.

Your logic fails. Why should anybody admit the early Church is Catholic? Just because some of the church fathers agreed with some of what you teach now? The RC church does not own a copyright on those doctrines you mentioned. They all ultimately originate from the Bible. You could just as well claim the early church is Orthodox. How many of the early church fathers believed in the assumption of Mary? Where did that come from? Be honest - the Catholic church makes stuff up that contradicts Scripture. The early church was composed of believers, and they did not all believe the same things about everything - even the church fathers. If you want to elevate the writings of those select group of early church fathers who agree with you, above the Scripture, that's up to you. I will stay with Scripture (while also listening to and appreciating the insights of those in the early church whose teachings align with Scripture).

@@berean77 the Orthodox Church, the Oriental Church, the Roman Catholic Church are all Apostolic Churches. The Eastern Orthodox Church and the Western Catholic Church (Roman Catholic Church) split in 1054. Before the NT scripture was written down the Apostolic Church existed. Hence Sola scriptura cannot be used to bind the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church happens to teach what the early Church taught. It is not a thing of copy but faith transmitted by tradition. The NT Bible considered as scripture is also the tradition of the Catholic Church. A reminder: before you use any books as scripture, give proof text where it is written the book is scripture. Where is it written in the Bible that the 27 books of the NT books are scripture? If you can't prove it, then how can you say they are scripture? As for the Assumption of Mary, is itvcontrary to scripture? Can you prove it wrong the claims made for the assumption of Mary?

@@berean77 you missed the point. When you read the Fathers (even if you limit it to those in the first four centuries) they talk about the sacrifice of the Eucharist, baptismal regeneration, apostolic succession (one bishop per area in succession with an apostle), and the primacy of Rome. These are all found within the Catholic Church today. We don’t claim that every Father taught on every doctrine, but the above beliefs are unique to the Catholic faith. So we have a historical pedigree. You might disagree with them, but you can’t claim that the early Church isn’t Catholic.

And to you I will give the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven: and whatever things you bind on earth shall be bound also in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth, they shall be loosed also in heaven.’ And again He says to him after His resurrection: ‘Feed My sheep.’ On him He builds the Church, and to him He gives the command to feed the sheep; and although He assigns a like power to all the apostles, yet He founded a single chair, and He established by His own authority a source and an intrinsic reason for that unity. Indeed, the others were that also which Peter was; but a *primacy is given to Peter, whereby it is made clear that there is but one Church and one chair.* So too, all are shepherds, and the flock is shown to be one, fed by all the apostles in single-minded accord. *If someone does not hold fast to this unity of Peter, can he imagine that he still holds the faith? If he desert the chair of Peter upon whom the Church was built, can he still be confident that he is in the Church?”* - St. Cyprian of Carthage, The Unity of the Catholic Church 4; first edition [A.D. 251]

Mortal man cannot give anyone eternal life. But mortal man can lead us to the pit of burning flames .......... Man cannot make moral , what the Heavenly Father has declared immoral , Even if sin is legalized, it is still sin in the eyes of the Heavenly Father........... No priests in the New Testament Church except Christ. That office of an unmarried man offering repeated sacrifices is unknown in the NT. There are elders, pastors, teachers, presbyters, even bishops depending on how you interpret the Greek - but no priests. They had to make it up.
@geoffjs
@geoffjs Месяц назад
Celibacy is a discipline not a doctrine, so it can change. Jesus was celibate so Catholic priests try to emulate Him. Offering sacrifice is what Jesus commanded Jn 6 51-58 which reflects Mal 1:11 which gentiles do in all places at all times. Catholic parishes offer Mass most days. The words “daily bread” in the Lord’s Prayer in their original language means supernatural bread or Eucharist The apostles were the first priests who were also bishops! The English word “priest” is derived from the Greek word presbuteros, which is commonly rendered into Bible English as “elder” or “presbyter.” The ministry of Catholic priests is that of the presbyters mentioned in the New Testament (Acts 15:6, 23). The Bible says little about the duties of presbyters, but it does reveal they functioned in a priestly capacity. They were ordained by the laying on of hands (1 Tm 4:14, 5:22), they preached and taught the flock (1 Tm 5:17), and they administered sacraments (Jas 5:13-15). These are the essential functions of the priestly office, so wherever the various forms of presbuteros appear-except, of course, in instances which pertain to the Jewish elders (Mt 21:23, Acts 4:23)-the word may rightly be translated as “priest” instead of “elder” or “presbyter.”

Name one person in every century since the Crucifixion who believed what you believe. You can't. You are following a mutation of a 16th century invention. "Get saved": say a sinner's prayer and boom you're good to go the rest of your life. Another theological novelty.

@colvinator1611 According to early Christianity, anyone who denies the Eucharist being the Body and Blood of Christ is not a Christian.

How about sharing what the accepted New Testament writers say. Protestants only refer to the claims of this set of books. The Didache is an important set of writings, but unfortunately it is not accepted Scripture and it is not the initial hurdle that Protestants face when discussing the Sacrifice of the Eucharist. I don’t see how you will persuade a Protestant if your evidences are outside of the accepted scriptures. The very same collection that we claim that we originally gave to the church.

It is a proto-catechism. To demand a "scripture" reference for every doctrine is to claim that everything else the Lord and the Apostles said and did is irrelevant.

To bring the witness of the Church Fathers to protestants undercuts their claim that they've restored the Church to its original condition. If the historic record of the early Church conflicts with protestantism and supports Catholicism/Apostolic Christianity, then it shows what protestantism actually is: an innovation based on claims made up by the "Reformers". The problem is as you note though: (many) protestants hear the testimony of the Church Fathers, get that it conflicts with their "Reformers" and then play the shell game by saying, "well this doesnt matter because its not in Scripture. Its dishonest but it does give then an easy out. FWIW, I was a fallen away Catholic and reading the Church Fathers helped me a lot in returning to the Church, as they did for the gentleman presenting the video evidently.

It was the Catholic Church that decided which Christian texts are Scripture and which are not - and Mass was regarded as a sacrifice centuries before then.

@@HAL9000-su1mz But we won’t get through to Protestants if we don’t. The Protestants will just conclude that there was a development of the doctrine, as they already do. Quite frankly, such ‘shut down the discussion’ type comments just cause further division.

I think since there are so many divisions/denominations that deviated from Catholicism it’s hard to make a video for each one - so the moderator uses a general “umbrella” term (Protestant). If you watch his other videos and testimony on Cordial Catholic, he has a background with Baptist/Calvinist type churches and did his graduate work at a highly regarded Thomistic Seminary.

In all Catholic churches, you will see a dead Jesus nailed to the cross forever. The Catholic Mass is a celebration of the suffering and death of Jesus. In a Protestant church, you will see only an empty cross. Protestants believe that Jesus suffered and died on the cross ONCE and then rose from the dead and is very much alive.
