Oh yeah, canards are also less affected by pitch/roll sensitivity as they aren't in ground effect. Thanks for watching!

Kyle how widespread is the use of topology optimization methods in motrsport? I always see these incredibly organic shapes and can't help but ask myself who came up with them. And since open source software like SU2 has support for adjoint based topology optimization, I was wondering if there is any use to applying this to a race car. I know that in the solar car arena it is often used to decrease drag. Anyways, I just wanted to pick your brain a bit, thanks.

Can you do a video on what you would do to improve aero on a car with no money. Then what you would do with £100 and what you would do with £1000 Would like to know what is the most effective mods on the cheap, thanks.

$100 just bought me a 4x8 sheet of Alumalite. A few dollars more for some generic mounting hardware and you could make a splitter & diffuser that's lighter and stronger than all but the most expensive dry carbon fiber pieces.

Awesome videos and though i had a semi decent guess to how things worked or why they worked its great to see the explaination ! Thanks for your time. I wanted to ask about canards that are shaped as a wing, how good would they be ? So instead of the hammer head sticking out the sides (some levels of racing wont allow this level of aero), i was wondering how a mini wing would do in place of a canard ? Im assuming the answer is clean air is needed for the wing to work well ? Next question is if you can get enough downforce from your other devices then would canards used to direct air over the wheels be beneficial if not too draggy ? Thanks Again

Hey, @KYLE.DRIVES could you make a video explaining the aerodynamic forces on and around a spinning wheel. And discuss the wheel's shapes contributions to reduced drag and increased brake cooling.

Hey. Im new in your channel and I really like it. Its very useful to learn about aerodynamics, specially for what I'm looking for, LeMans Prototype. I have a question for you. Is there a way that you could make a video about Full LeMans aerodynamics. I mean. What are the essentials things to make one of this.
@ExtraFungus
@ExtraFungus 5 лет назад
I have a mid engine car. It gets floaty on the highway. One solution is to vent the front compartment through the hood, it's believed the air funneled to the radiator builds a high pressure and lifts the front of the car. I found this video looking to see what else could be done but obviously I'm talking about highways speeds so any benefits discussed here are less likely to make a noticeable improvement at highway speeds.

Hello Kyle, what about slender wing theory and vortex lift? Because of the sharp leading edge, high angle of attack, small width and lack of end plates, I've always thought of them as "rectangular slender wing" designs.

what happens when you throw a vortex counter to the flow down streem? say on the drivers side spin the air clockwise around the A pillar were it will want to spin counterclockwise when back at the C piller on a fastback
@MyLonewolf25
@MyLonewolf25 7 лет назад
Couldn't also extending spill plates higher ( before the canards separating the flow) help? Also there are times where you do want more frontal or rearward bias for aero depending on high speed stability and how it handles at speed. Just because you're not oversteering at low speed ( sub 60-80 mph ) doesn't mean you won't oversteer at at high speed ( effects rear and mid engine more than front but mostly depends on suspension design) And just because you're running neutral or slightly understeery at low speed doesn't mean you won't push like a pig at high speed ( effects front engine more in my experience) But this all depends greatly on setup and the car

When does a splitter become a front wing? Is it about the profile shape?
@slickstrings
@slickstrings 9 месяцев назад
Old comment, you probably have your answer by now but its almost in the name. A splitter divides the air, forcing most of it to the upper surface to both direct it to the radiator and to create a higher pressure zone above. Also by limiting the air going below the car, reducing the lift turbulent air underneath causes. Some splitters have a curved under surface on high end race cars but are often also just a flat plate that works well with a flat underbody to help the goal of getting the air out from under the car quickly. You can see on a wing however the whole body of the wing is in the airstream. Look at an F1 car. the job of the front wing is not to divide the air, but to interact with it as it flows over the wing, causing pressure differential in that manner.

how fast do you have to go for aero to begin working? be interested to know if you haven't done a video like it. kinda like the old spoiler on a road car does nothing thought. does it do nothing?
@JerseyMikeP
@JerseyMikeP 6 лет назад
He made videos on that subject....It basically comes down to "HOW EXTREME" your aero is. He said a WRX STI wing doesn't really do anything below 120 mph. By Comparison a One:One or ACR Viper will produce downforce that you can feel at 60mph or so. Downforce/Drag goes up 4 times as speed doubles. Most cars it's only effective at 150mph+.

Would a double-layered bonnet hood (biplane style) work to produce effective amounts downforce on the front axle? When I say double-layered, I mean the bottom layer acts as the bonnet hood, but the top layer acts as a wing, and that both layers are of the same general shape, which is based on the bottom layer (the actual hood).

How do canard work at high angles of attack? In airplane terms, it acts like a delta wing. Anyone who's familiar with the high-alpha limit behavior of the Mirage 2000 will know that the delta vortex state produces a ton of lift, buuut it's not exactly low drag. Still though. It worked for Concorde on landing. A conventional wing would have been stalled to death and back.

It's not really either, it's more of a modified bumper shape that's between a canard and an extended splitter. "Air dam" isn't a great term for describing bodywork as it's very vague.

until I just googled this I have never seen a canard on a car 0.0.. From an aerodynamics perspective, they look like a complete joke, not to mention you might as well get rid of them to increase the performance of the splitter. I mean not that I have exactly tested them myself, but I'd like to see actual data on the performance of a car with and without canards.

Are the “Splitter Wickers” on the 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 also canards? They attach at the end of the splitter and rise up. They look different than typical canards so I am unsure if they are actually canards or another aero device. media.ford.com/content/fordmedia/fna/us/en/news/2019/03/13/mustang-shelby-gt500-supercomputers-3d-printing.html
