How do centrifugal pumps work?
What are centrifugal pumps for?
And what are the basic principles of their functioning?
We wil find out in this lesson
The centrifugal pump is the most commonly used pump, both in the industrial and civil sectors
This type of pump converts rotational energy of its impeller to energy in a moving fluid. So it transforms the mechanical energy coming from its engine first into kinetic energy and then into hydrodynamic energy in a moving fluid.
The basic principle of centrifugal pumps is to transport volumes of fluid from a region of low pression to a region of high pressure.
Thanks to this scheme we are able to understand how this happens.
At the bottom of this scheme we notice the first reservoir containing a fluid, in this case water.
This reservoir represents our region of low pressure, while the reservoir at the top represents our region of high pressure
Thanks to the functioning of the centrifugal pump and of its inner impeller, the water will be transferred from the lower reservoir, up to the higher reservoir.
Initially a part of water is already present inside the pump and when the impeller start rotating, the water is cut off by its blades creating a region of low pressure.
The pressure inside the pump is much lower than the pressure inside the lower reservoir, so there is a consistent difference between point A and point D.
Thanks to this pressure difference the water is sucked into the pipe and flows from the lower reservoir, up to the pump.
Now I'm going to explain to you how the water flows from the pump to the upper reservoir, thanks to the rotary motion of its inner impeller. To do it, I will use the Bernoulli equation.

Questions: 1. It looks like point C is in the middle of the entry pipe. How can you define the head of the pump with respect to a point that you could pick arbitrarily along a potentially very long pipe? 2. If head is defined by how high a pump can pump water, then what meaning does "Ha" have? Ha looks like an arbitrary distance from some point at the bottom of the reservoir to the inlet pipe of the pump. 3. I don't understand the proof, but it looks like the final equation might be a trivial statement of conservation of energy: the theoretical head produced by the pump is equal to the actual head plus the losses. Why bother going through the proof at all?

What if H one and H2 are the same and you’re simply using it as a transfer pump. does anything change besides flow rate low rate?

You would not need centrifugal pump then...u can just create a conduit and water will flow to fill the conduit until it level out...just think of river...to move the water..u then need an energy...often from potential energy to kinetic energy..

Centrifugal pumps are not ideal for pumping high viscosity liquids. Even if you find one that can, the efficiency is very low and seal life is poor. I would recommend looking at positive displacement pumps for this service. Specific to your application, lobe pumps, circumferential piston pumps, and others are commonly used for viscous foods like your hot sauce.

@@chililovers4332 This was a year old comment, but I wonder if you had considered a peristaltic pump for this. I don't know the volume you're thinking of, but if it's "last mile" delivery, so to speak, maybe that would work.

2:11 basic conceptual mistake here. The pump does not suck the liquid. The fluid must be availale at pump suction. Also the point C is not at much lower pressure than point A.
