A global tech outage impacted millions on Friday after a faulty software update was sent from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike to Microsoft clients. CrowdStrike provides antivirus software to Microsoft for its Windows devices. Dan Ives, managing director and senior equity analyst for Wedbush Securities, joined CBS News to discuss the incident.

Every news outlet is getting this wrong, it affects Microsoft systems but it's nothing to do with Microsoft, not everyone uses CrowdStrike. A simple way to think about it is if you anti virus software disables your windows computer, the software caused the issue not the operating system.

Detailed technicalities matters less, may be good for knowledge. Reality is Windows was completely down on machines, and not at all usable. Professionally Windows avoided blame game, and Crowdstrike came forward ro take the blame.

It likely wasn’t tested because the update was defined as a simple security patch not effecting the operating system. Though the update did make a change to the operating system that went unnoticed.

Companies have out sourced their IT to a few companies like Tata Consultancy Services in India. Between Crowdstrike and the top 3 IT companies it only takes a few people not double checking to make this happen.

I do find it strange how Crowdstrikes update is the fault of Microsoft and they have to be better prepared by some of these pundits. Falcon software is not Microsoft's, and its up to Crowdstrike to properly test it in a sandbox. Its like putting gas in a diesel and blaming GMC.

Because it's a cybersecurity suite. There is a constant need to update the threat definitions as new exploits are discovered. If you turn off auto updates, you leave yourself vulnerable to any and every zero day exploit. What happened here is that an update which should have been a routine update of definitions also had an embedded change which affected the operating system. It was probably passed through the testing process with no testing whatsoever of the effects beyond the simple definition update. There are two major kinds of testing, Unit Testing, and Integration Testing. Unit Testing tests the basic function of the change being implemented. Integration Testing tests how the package functions within the overall system. Does it interfere with or break anything else? They probably skipped Integration testing completely, and just said "Yep, it catches the new viruses we added to the definitions."

Many or almost all security products work with kernel drivers, and in the case of crowdstrike the driver was also at fault. Normally drivers are not distributed with definition updates but with version updates from the crowdstrike sensor itself, in this case the companies have probably set the installation of minor updates to automatic, which I would never do myself. at least not on productive systems.

most corporate IT policies force windows updates on their computers whether it's a good idea or not, if you had a personal computer you can disable this or defer it until you can research things on your own, which includes manually downloading the updates yourself. but there was not the case here. if it's not 3rd party services like crowdstrike it could be something else coming from microsoft themselves, they have been known plenty of times to put out windows updates the break things, break drivers, or new features that introduce even more exploits. and the way this crowdstrike service shims itself into windows to try to prevent this is what caused the bsod

Microsoft will be liable for whatever participation in the Crowdstrike development and release. I'm guessing that Microsoft had little to no involvement. Probably no involvement. Crowdstrike moves forward by firing the engineers and the management chain that allowed this to happen. Potentially, criminal activity is involved. In any case, it was a QA failure that should have NEVER happened with massive implications.

You can thank the small time antivirus market for this. Microsoft fixed the issue with Windows Vista and McCaffe and Semantek threatened to exploit windows if it didn't let them have Kernal access. So Microsoft caved and gave limited Kernal access instead of saying no.

Daniel Ives may not be the biggest idiot, but I would say in the top 3. broken update from a cybersecurity vendor only soft-bricks Windows PC's. Yet, you pin quite a hefty amount of responsibility upon Microsoft to fix what they don't need to fix. Don't know what's worse - @CBS why are you interviewing an EQUITY analyst but asking them technical questions or the confidence Daniel has in delivering bad information

All these companies have very bad IT policies and managers. It’s very simple, 3 key rules regarding updates. First never ever auto update to production. Second, update a few devices in staging environment for up to 30 days. Third, roll out update to production after successful staging test. Now the staging environment test is up to 30 days, but can be less depending on companies’ need to have latest update fast. Nonetheless, even if it’s for 1 day, always test in staging first. Do not auto update. Any good IT professional knows new updates are often buggy, and need to be tested, this is not new. Lastly, auto updating a production environment while users are logged in & working is asking for trouble. This could easily prevented, oftentimes so called experts get complacent and stop following basic rules.

It wasn't a Microsoft update. It was a Crowdstrike update. Windows 10 canbe affected by 3rd party software glitches, just like any other computer system, Windows or non-Windows, that has ever been made.

@@DavidTangman hey not the first time this has happened with updates and Microsoft! How many times has Microsoft had to roll back patches? The real issue here is poor testing by BOTH Crowdstrike and Microsoft! Crowdstrike submitted their patches and the roll out was approved. The reason this is a major deal are the kinds and types of applications the world now relies on that were taken off line.

@@DavidTangman Why you try to protect Microsoft? I have used Microsoft update before and it did crash my PC and I have to reinstall my Windows. Microsoft engineers now are spyware engineers.
