At the heart of the projector, a precision prism splits white light into primary colors. The lights inside this machine are brighter than the headlights on a jumbo jet!

Visually impressive graphics showing the mechanics of the DLP chip with 8.8 million moving mirrors is amazing to produce video color range to enhance the viewing experience. The only downside is if you drop and break these 8.8 million mirrors you will have 61,600,000 years of bad luck.

For anyone wondering, the projector featured in the video is NEC NP-PH1201QL which targets at installation/business market, not for cinema. Also 281 trillion shades of colour quoted in the title is inaccurate, as this particular projector can process up to 12bit colour in each R/G/B channel, then maps them to a 16bit container for display, which makes the maximum amount of colour that can be reproduced on screen (2^12)^3 = 68.7billion shades.

+Wen Driftwood you're wrong tho. This is a Digital Projection's insight. And it is intended as a home theater solution.
@wendriftwood1952
@wendriftwood1952 8 лет назад
+daniel malik Digital Projection's Insight and NEC NP-PH1201QL are exactly the same, they'are both manufactured by Delta, with $100K price tag it's not really intended for home theatre application.

+Wen Driftwood I work digital projection. we sell these projectors for both home and the commercial markets. They come in both laser for very large screen and a dual LED model. it all depends on the application.
@paulshanks1000
@paulshanks1000 8 лет назад
+Joshua Edwards and/or +Wen Driftwood do you know if the 12bit color per channel includes dithering? Do you know if 12 bits of color is achieved in 1/60 of a second or if 1/24th second is required? Lastly, what is the purpose of the 16bit container if only 12 bits are used?
@wendriftwood1952
@wendriftwood1952 8 лет назад
+Paul Shanks If the input source is lower than 12bit there will be dithering. When connected via DisplayPort, 12bit can be achieved up to 60fps @ DCI 4K, de-gamma table maps 12 bit input to 16 bit palette for better precision.

+runforitman probably because it isn't really comforting when the projector you could be sitting next to just... you know... blows up. And then some random camera person comes in and films the pieces, before going: 'wait, this isn't as clean as they make it seem in those blow-up videos...'

It’s the same. The newer have 4k light engines, but still the same. It’s just the “box” thats from Imax, inside the box it’s Barco (in history Christie). Servers are also easy, from Barco, ICMP(-X). Just the content is different.

We go from a white light bulb to lasers without an explanation why.
@MrMopbucket
@MrMopbucket 8 лет назад
+SgtMantis Seems to me they made a mistake. You either use a white bulb or lasers to supply the RGB...not both. Not to mention when lasers are used, there is no prism needed before the DLP mirror.
@UXXV
@UXXV 8 лет назад
+SgtMantis was going to comment that too "281 trillion lasers n shit"
@paulshanks1000
@paulshanks1000 8 лет назад
Isn't the prism still needed to combine the 3 DMD's into a single image? Also, there still has to be a way to get each laser to to the right DMD (and at the correct angle), so surely the prism is still used, right?
@MrMopbucket
@MrMopbucket 8 лет назад
Yes, but they clearly show the prism before the DMD's, not after. Not a big deal, but wrong nonetheless.
@paulshanks1000
@paulshanks1000 8 лет назад
I guess I don't understand. Regardless of the type of light source, the correct color of light has to be directed to each of the DMD's and then recombined before reaching the lens. There is not a way to do this (that I know of) on a 3 chip projector, without a prism. Even if the light source is laser.

some newer and cheaper projectors use transparent screen and a power light bulb facing the screen such then goes through the lens and on the surface you aim it at

Can the human eye actually distinguish that many colors? Seems that I remember learning in art class that the answer is no. Anyone have the answer?
@Ag89q43G0HyA
@Ag89q43G0HyA 5 лет назад
Yes it can, the thing is that you dont put that much attention to details on common displays, investigate about color banding, 8 bit color, 10 bit color, 16 bit color cameras and you'll learn.

@BrownieX001
@BrownieX001 8 лет назад
+StoreBrand not a valid reason. If they were 4k or even 1440p I would have gotten a projector already. But now OLED tvs are out so what's the point.
@JiiruKoga
@JiiruKoga 8 лет назад
+BrownieX001 Since I got a 1080p projector I'll never go back to tv's. The size immersion is more important to me than the 4K you can't even notice on the smaller TV's. I want a 4K projector but they're too expensive now. I own a 50 inch 1080p tv too and didn't appreciate 1080p until I saw it on a 300inch projector. On the tv the 720 and 1080 looked the same from 3 meters away.
@BrownieX001
@BrownieX001 8 лет назад
maybe to you it makes no difference. which is nice you got what you like. i am different.
@JiiruKoga
@JiiruKoga 8 лет назад
+BrownieX001 there is a chart I saw somewhere on the net that shows the screen size and distance and what resolution a human can detect for each set. What I learned from it was that 46 inch tv's viewed from 3 meters people can't even detect the difference from 720 and 1080 so buying a 4K tv at that size and watching from that distance would be a waste of money.
