Jay, it is a sad state of affairs in the US when someone's success is used to shame them for it instead of being held up and emulated. Keep doing what you are doing so we can live vicariously through you and enjoy listening to million dollar systems. Don't ever apologize for your success.

Hey Jay - I'm surprised you felt a need to make this video. You don't owe anyone any explanation! As long as you are transparent and authentic in your content (not hiding some undeclared motives) you will have lots of genuine subscribers who enjoy sharing in your journey. As you said you are the only one on YT I found discussing this level of equipment. Also I find a lot of the others pretty boring to be honest. By the way, I am loving the shorts - great way to share great music on a great system! Keep it going!

Successful and highly motivated individuals like yourself are necessary to bring more people into high-end audio. My journey in this hobby was not started by some bloke carrying a cheap, plastic boom box, but by an acquaintance with a great and very expensive system. 46 years later, I still remember that wonderful system! Jay, you are providing the same great and educational experience to many aspiring audiophiles, and they will go on to build great systems. Stay Strong!

Hey Jay, I think you know I'm a real fan, been a subscriber for about two years, bought a consultation with you, etc etc etc. All that to say I hope you understand I have no ulterior motive here with the questions. I have been really dying to know financial specifics on how you acquire the gear that you do, not to check you, but mainly because I'd like to replicate the process! I suppose this is a minor criticism, but this video really doesn't explain at all how you afford the pieces you have. You mention you work very hard and grind etc, of that I have no doubt, but a Janitor can work till his fingers bleed, he will never own a new Ferrari as a janitor. Just considering the speakers behind you, the Chronosonics are $350,000 a pair. The speakers alone represent a yearly salary that less 1% of the US population make! Not to mention that most people with a job earning $350k a year still couldn't afford those speakers! Some one walking into a Wilson dealer today and purchasing a pair of Chronosonics cash is almost certainly a multi-millionaire. You have repeatedly admitted you aren't that! So, please understand I'm not asking you to divulge any personal financial information or anything along those lines; rather I'm hoping you can offer something, anything, a bit more specific than "work hard." For example, do you take advantage of leverage/financing? Do you start small and trade up? I'm hoping for details along those lines, etc. Anyway, I hope this post doesn't hit the wrong way! I'm a huge supporter of yours and really am in your corner. Thanks.

Flippers as I understand are people who try to purchase stuff cheap and sell it for a profit. If you are simply selling something that you have tired of, typically at a loss, that's just a normal transaction done all the time. Nothing unusual by that. But the Escalade rant(sort of), definitely sounds a bit materialistic; five jobs plus the specific type of wheels shows a little bit of boasting on your part. Again, nothing that is out of the ordinary; that's why 911 turbos and M3-4's exist. We like our toys but I never thought of audio equipment that way. Hey, as long as family comes first and the kid's college fund and general family stuff, a roof over your head should come before working your ass off for a car. Maybe investments are a better place to put your money than things. I like to come from a place where buying something is not a chore and I think you confuse others for bashing you because of all the energy you seem to want to put into owning things. Hey, I never complain or bash something because it's expensive or sounds ridiculous. If you're going to have a family you have to be committed to it. And I still don't know what you do for a living.

So, you don't see much live music, know what good jazz, or classical, or whatever, in a good acoustic space, may sound like, or spend time in a recording studio understanding the equipment, the difference in sound between different microphones, and their effect on the recording, how do you interpret fine equipment without a music reference? Or are you simply listening to which has more detail?

I’ve climbed the audio mt … sat at the summit and discovered I actually prefers most manufacturers 2nd. 3rd tier products rather than the statement gear. To me the ultra gear gave m e anxiety, was too high strung and imposing. In the process sold off my dagostino, pass labs monos, in favor if the Boulder 866 and krell K-300i integrated amps. I have a great turntable with thf new krell phonostage, review for positive feedback in the works, with the new 20k PS audio speakers, also in for review and having a ball. It’s amazing how good these price points have gotten and I’ve enjoyed the scaling back process. Can I afford 100k speakers? Yes. I just don’t want them anymore. Maybe when I retire? Maybe. You seem like a great guy. Do you bro. If ever in Soho NYC, let me know.

You constantly contradict your self, not a good thing to do on RU-vid. But now you say that you suffer from anxiety and it makes more sense. When you started out and I asked you about something you said your response was not to take anything you say seriously and all this is for fun . Remember? What happened? I am glad you get to enjoy the finer things in life. There was a great deal of hard work that went into all the equipment that you have shown. It is wonderful that someone like yourself who understands the effort that went into building and designing this equipment gets to enjoy it. If you have watched the movie the accountant, there is a woman who is thrilled to see a Jackson Pollock painting that the accountant had. She was thrilled not because of its cost, but knowing of the mastery of the artist who made such a beautiful painting. In the end, the accountant gives here the painting. She could have sold it to improve her life, but she hung it on her wall to do what was intended by the artist. Just enjoy it. This is the passion I see in you when you present your equipment. The makers of this equipment should be thrilled that a person as your self is enjoying and respecting their hard work.

I sense a bit of defensive demeanor (maybe rightfully justified) by having to provide an explanation of financial conditions. This is completely without necessity as we all enjoy this life as we see fit not under any obligation to answer to Anything or anyone. Same as religious beliefs. We practice our spirituality individually without answering to any organization or person. Giving an personal opinion about "ALL HiFi" is completely subjective. There shouldn't 😢 be a need to get uptight or loose sleep. It's supposed to be a fun hobby right? Let's keep it light 😉.

I can relate to the sense of growing up on the wrong side of the tracks, and needing to work hard to feel like I belong on the other side. At the same time, these efforts have diminishing returns. I've finally reached the point that I can quietly appreciate my own luxuries, and work on my insecurities, in my own space, and not have to broadcast them for validation. Takes a long time to get there (now in my upper 50's), and never completely goes away. Our efforts of validation can have opportunity costs. I had kids late in life, for which I am thankful. If I had been a younger dad, my own ambitions would have taken quite a bit away from my time and attention to them. Money is a key commodity. but as you get older, you realize time and personal energy are the most scarce and valuable of all. Good luck with your journey.

Jay I greatly appreciate your sincerity. I would inform you that in Italy you cannot afford one single piece of your equipment if you work as physician! Do not complain about US haters. If your channel were in Italy the haters would have been multiplied for a factor of thousand. In Italy if someone get success the predominant sentiment is not the admiration. The question to me about ultra high end is : are they worth ? Hundreds thousands or even millions of dollars for this ultra high end but which is the net benefit in terms of quality of music reproduction in comparison with an appropriately assembled hifi system under 10000 USD? A system assembled among thousands of different speakers, amplifiers, dac, turntables, cartridges that requires deep knowledge of many products and in many ages because many gems are from the past. If we accept as a standard old b&w 800 and a nad silver series we are now under 5000 usd, well, this system is capable of a quality reproduction of 90 per cent over 100 per cent achievable, so how better is ultra high end in term of reproduction? We say 9 per cent? Ok I think is honest to clarify that you pay 100000 usd for an improvement of 2 per cent.

12 mins of tap dancing around the issue, followed by 4 mins of shaming those who can't afford high end gear. Nice. Exactly what i expected from this video. What we want to know is what jobs do you actually do to earn this kind of money? Not just a blanket term like "I work alot". Are you working at McDonald's followed by a shift at the gas station, then bartending at night? No? Then tell us what this "work" actually is...especially if you're not a doctor or lawyer. You didn't answer the question at all. You just said you "work" more. That still doesnt add up to the kind of gear flowing through your hands on a constant basis, IMO. Im not a hater or jealous, i just want to know what field I need to go into to replicate this level of success to afford such a lavish lifestyle.

I think you understood the risks of becoming a youtube creator. Criticism is part of the gig. What's worse, is the fact that you are willing to entertain the naysayers just as this video does. Why waste your time? For the record, I find your content interesting regardless of whether I buy into your audio principles.

Jay, it comes with the success and your model for being a "consultant" of sorts. People are curious about your background and if you keep it hidden, it creates an environment for haters, and even non haters who don't trust people who aren't very transparent. I love that you are so into high end audio but I wonder more about, did you show interest in audio before you had resources to buy high end?

Personally I find in hi end audio a lot of show. The systems are to look at as much as listen to. But if that's how someone wants to spend their money it's their business and nobody elses. Can't believe someone would even ask how you afford it or if it's all your's. I would just disreguard anyone that nosey.

I have a very small beginning opinionated channel, that's getting some traction lately. I don't even understand why other channels give a shit about what you do. You're clearly passionate,we all share that. I really could give two shits less that you have speakers that can buy you a new bmw worth. It doesn't dictate who and what you are in life. You're clearly passionate, you said it correctly your journey isn't mine or vice versa. I understand this video , as it's clearly something you felt needs to be addressed. But man , look behind you man... You bought it for yourself,you created a small business out of it . It's absolutely, positively not relevant what someone else thinks. Salty people whether it's the mid-fi guy or the super high end guy . Have no clue what true passion is let alone they can insert anything useful to what you do. It's mostly envy...they can't have it so they have to judge the guy that has it.

Hey Jay, you are the only honest guy in this community. All other reviewers are always giving great reviews, and we, the viewers do not get any smarter, for that reason in it self. You do purchase all the equipment yourself vs. others who is given the equipment to review, that is the whole damn difference. Keep it up my friend! You are the honest one.......
@realleescoggins
@realleescoggins Год назад
I have to differ on this having worked at TAS for three years. Equipment loans don't influence how TAS reviewers view a product. The vast majority is sent back and in some cases the reviewer purchases it. Honest takes are the only thing that demonstrate integrity for readers or viewers.

Come on, Jay!!! This is way to much info. High end audio is supposed to inject immense pleasure and enjoyment into our lives. I think you're beginning to stray a little bit to far a field with to much doom and gloom. Far to many audiophiles take themselves way to seriously. This is a hobby, not a job. Who cares about all the drama. You have a good thing going. Don't screw it up with all the unnecessary sideshow dramatics. Could you please just play some music for us?

@@jaysaudiolab Jay, I appreciate what you do and clearly this channel and hifi is a labor of love for you. I've enjoyed your videos. However, watching this video has me a bit concerned for you. My brother has a very successful youtube channel (not on hifi) and has had it for years. I know from talking to him the stress of creating content constantly and how every video creates demand for 2 more and it keeps building and building, which the creative content gets harder and harder to come up with. Add on the other jobs you're doing and being a dad (I have 4 kids myself) and the constant criticism of trolls, the stress can eat you up. When you're talking about the stress multiple times, not sleeping, not being able to concentrate, and sacrificing time with family, it sounds like it may be eating you up. My takeaway from this video is you might need a vacation! No demands, expectations or deadlines for a couple weeks can be a great way to gain perspective. As much as I love hifi let's remember these are really expensive toys and we're really splitting hairs on these systems. I mean, I could pretty much blindly pick any combo of gear you've had on your channel, regardless of price, and it would sound better than 99.999999% (6n's) of what anyone else on Earth would have or even had a chance to ever hear! Since I travel for work a bit, I've learned the best "system upgrade" for my hifi may just be to not listen to it for a couple weeks. Then when I get home and have some time to listen I am always pretty blown away by what I'm hearing. It's only when I sit day after day that I start nit-picking and getting the itch to "make improvements." So, maybe take a vacation Jay. Enjoy the family. Rest the ears and audiophile inner-critic and just appreciate where you're at right now.

Jay we know you stole it now give it all back 😂 I suppose it is quite hard to connect with your channel sometimes because your equipment is so high end but it’s still very very interesting and you’re a likeable youTuber. And good for you for working so hard to achieve your goals and sharing it with us 👍 I work six days a week to afford equipment that I have which is all paid for. I guess if I was a RU-vidr in the public domain it will be hard not to take criticism personally which is obviously what you shouldn’t do ,take it personally. I did enjoy your journey in to vinyl and Luxman amps you featured which I own myself. Ride the negatives enjoy the positives.

No matter how the youtube part of your audio journey goes, someday soon your daughter is going to come up to you and say, “…DAD, can we hear how my new CD/record aounds on your system…” and then as you lke to say, thing get real… Your audio future is a bright one, enjoy! Take care.

On that note since you did the mofi sourcepoint 10 can you do something in between that and the ultra high end? i'm talking about Danny Ritchie's nxotica's or nxextreme's. Also thought's on the big TAD speakers? They are from what i heard really ultra high end. On the pursuit perfect youtube channel there is a video on those speakers and that guy even does low frequentie cut of on those speakers to be sent to 2 triple stage subwoofers so the Tad speakers sounded more pure. Insane but in a good way. Thumbs up on your video! I am at my 40's and can afford more then i was 25. No problem you worked for it. I respect your privacy. You owe nobody an explanation about anything and IMO there is no reason for you to feel you have to apologize for what you do. I enjoy your site. If I didn't I wouldn't watch it. I may disagree with you but I still respect you. I can't say that about other people who also have audio equipment sites on RU-vid. Your music is not my music. Your ideal equipment is not my ideal equipment. Still I enjoy watching what you call your journey and follow it without judgment of you or your right to your opinions. I think you say what you believe. I don't think you have ever lied to us. Once upon a time I was on a similar journed but my life took me in a different direction. There was a time when I could have afforded to do what you are doing but that wasn't where I wanted to go. Just keep making the kind of videos you do and I will continue to enjoy them. Hope you can find a way to relieve some of your stress. That might be the most unfortunate sacrifice you make. Your most important things in life are your health and your love of your family.
