Hi all, and welcome to The Dog Grooming Nerd!
Today's video talks though dog grooming clipper blades and comb attachments. Understanding the variety of blades can be difficult when you're only starting out as a dog groomer, and I wanted to explain the very basics to you guys.
This video covers the anatomy of a clipping blade, the different kind of blades and comb attachments available and my personal favourites. I have also linked a few useful resources below for you to take advantage of. The most important tool will definitely be the clipping blade length chart just below, as that will show you the length of pretty much every blade and comb attachment widely available on the market.
Please use the comment section as a platform to ask questions about which blade to use on certain dogs. Naturally dog grooming isn't a black and white profession, but getting other groomers' feedback and preferences is always great!

I am no longer taking my poodle to the groomer not risking Getting respiratory illness. I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this illness that's going around! Is it airborne like kennel cough is? If yes, you dog can unfortunately pick it up from literally anywhere other dogs have been present. I'm sure groomers in the areas with the infection are putting in extra measures to disinfect all of their areas between all dogs and monitoring for symptoms. I'm super inactive on RU-vid as I've found TikTok much less time consuming, so if you're on the platform go give me a follow (thedoggroomingnerd there as well). I'll be filming tutorials soon. 😊

Some of the best information on blades vs combs watched so far. I wasn’t searching for combs but rather a blocking blade and what it does. Glad RU-vid popped you up in the search results. I started with a 5f for my standard poodles then tried combs. I like using a comb better, I find the blade is farther from the skin and the blade runs cooler. I’ve only used a 10 with the combs but will try a 30 from your preference. Many thanks for your professional presentation.

Hi 👋🏼 I have a miniature poodle and I am using a mini clipper with a 10 blade for her face. I have tried a even smaller clipper with a 40 blade and an attachment comb but that was difficult and I wasn’t thrilled with the result. I know it is normal to use a 10 blade for her face, but I would like to leave a little more length. So my question is, is there a small clipper that has a 5 or 7 blade, I can only find the one I have (Andis) that came with a 10 and a 40 blade?

@TheDogGroomingNerd
@TheDogGroomingNerd 2 года назад
I often use a 7 blade on Shih Tzus bodies, which is 3mm. Then leaving the legs longer is a personal preference, I like leaving them a good few lengths longer so you probably want a comb guard that is 10mm or longer. It really depends on what guards came with your trimmers.

Hi, thank you, your video was great! I Groom the main body of my cavachon with an andis 5fc blade, as I like a shorter coat, & I always scissor the face. I like to leave the head fluffier than the body but can never get the cheeks to look blended in right, so I’d like to use a comb attachment to blend the head and face in together, what size comb attachment(s) would you recommend? And would you use a different comb att for cheeks to the head? Many thanks xx
@TheDogGroomingNerd
@TheDogGroomingNerd Год назад
Hi! I personally prefer to use a length or two longer on the head, so either 4f or 4CA with a 5f on the body. I use the same length on the cheeks if I do clip down them, but as it takes all the hair the same length you may not be able to get a rounded finish on the head. If I want a round head, I'll lightly skim down the cheeks with the same blade I use over the top of the head and then use chunkers and/or thinners to blend it all together.

You should start taking your puppy to a groomer as soon as they're allowed outside after puppy jabs. This isn't for the full works, it'd be for a "puppy intro" session that includes a bath & blow-dry, brush through, nails and a small tidy up. These sessions are super important to get dogs used to being groomed in a professional environment. Full groom completely then depends on your puppy's confidence levels, that'll determine when they're ready for it. And in terms of trimmers, I haven't used Andis so I can't comment on their quality! I personally use Heiniger Saphir clippers and Mastercut 5-in-1 trimmers

Hello, I have working Great Pyrenees, I understand we are in a warmer climate then what the breed prefers. I do not want to "shave them" I would like to trim and take out some mats. I picked up the Oyster A5 turbo with the #10, I also picked up #5 skiptooth based on the guide. I started and the #5 would not even get into the coat . I am VERY aware of the dangers of hurting them and too short . Any tips?
@TheDogGroomingNerd
@TheDogGroomingNerd Год назад
Please be very careful with a skip tooth as it's very easy to catch skin between the teeth. If the blade is not going under the matts then it's not a short enough blade, you may have to use the 10 you have instead. And please don't use a blade all over your dog as it can cause coat funk. A lot of groomers clip out a "tram line" on double coated dogs to give them a panel under their belly. This gives skin contact against cool surfaces in the hot weather.

@TheDogGroomingNerd 3 года назад
Hi! It's really down to personal preference. I've seen some taken super short with a 7 blade, and some left long with comb attachments. If I was told to do whatever I wanted on a BC, I'd probably go for a 16mm comb attachment or slightly longer.

I sometimes groom my mini poodle at home and have been using a 10 blade over the comb attachments but now I'm thinking this is where I'm going wrong as it tends to just get very 'stuck' with lots of coat. Would you recommend switching to a 7 blade on its own rather than the combs (I usually tend to use the shortest length comb) or switch to a 30 blade with the combs over the top?
@TheDogGroomingNerd
@TheDogGroomingNerd 3 года назад
It'll depend on the finish you want. A comb attachment will leave the coat looking slightly more natural, a 7 blade will give a very close and almost smooth looking finish on a Poodle coat. Also, how are you prepping the coat before you start clipping? The coat has to be squeaky clean and brushed through, otherwise the comb attachment will catch on every single knot.
@pinklizzy17
@pinklizzy17 3 года назад
@@TheDogGroomingNerd that's really helpful thank you!! I think I might look into getting a 7 blade although I don't groom her myself every time, she does go to a groomer sometimes as well. I think I've finally got the washing right after watching lots of RU-vid videos but do struggle to get the coat fully straight when drying as I only have a human hairdryer. I do make sure I can get my metal tooth comb through her hair and all the way to the skin though before clipping. It's more that I get lots of hair stuck in the teeth of the guard that I have to keep stopping to remove and it takes ages, even though shes a tiny mini!

@TheDogGroomingNerd
@TheDogGroomingNerd 2 года назад
If the coat is in good condition, just get her straight in the bath. A good deshed or conditioning shampoo will loosen the old undercoat, then blast like your life depends on it. I do most of my deshed work in the bath and while blasting, makes the job so much easier! The one Newfie I have on my books currently just has a foot and hock tidy + clipped under pads, otherwise her furnishings are left natural. But a good outline trim looks so nice on Newfies too. 😍 And I'd never clip a Newfie unless it was medically necessary.

I've got a terrier cross dog with very long hair and shaggy looking legs and feet. I was told by a groomer I should not clip her hair. I was told trimming her could cause her to lose her hair and go bald. I don't want a shaved dog. I like her to keep enough of her coat that it doesn't change the look of her, just make her tidier. I've got clippers how short can I clip her without ruining her double coat. I was thinking of about 3" long but I can't find any combs that I can attach to get anywhere near that long. What should I be using? I've got andis clippers.
@TheDogGroomingNerd
@TheDogGroomingNerd Год назад
Without seeing your dog in person, I can't really comment on if clipping would damage the coat or not. Clipping into an undercoat on a double coated dog (coat like a Shepherd) can cause coat funk that thins the hair and it can grow back really patchy and wispy, but that'll really depend on the coat. Technically every single dog has an undercoat but it's only the double coated category that can suffer from clipping. Comb attachments generally stop at 1" long and you would just scissor the coat if you want anything longer. Longer comb attachments don't really work and they just end up dragging in the coat, I've tried lengths up to 1,5" but they're just not worth the hassle.

@@TheDogGroomingNerd Thanks for your reply. I understand not seeing her makes it difficult. The groomer called her top coat guard hair. I understand that 1 is the longest coat setting and 9 is the shortest, but how long are these in inches? These are just meaningless numbers without that correlation. Then, my set comes with 4 combs, 3mm, 6mm, 9mm, and 12mm. How do these relate to inches of hair length? 12mm= ,47 inch, less than 1/2 inch. How do I cut my dog to 5/8" length? Is less than 1/2 inch the best I can do with what I have? What if I use the clipper without the comb? And is a guard the same as a comb? And how do I use them in combination? The comments below speak of CA4 and 5CA. What are these and how do they relate to the numbers above?

Ok let's break it down! I've never used the Arcos myself, but based on what you're saying it's the other way around with the length. Setting 1 which is a #40 is VERY short, it's like a surgical blade length. That's only .7mm, that's the length I personally use under all my comb attachments. Setting 5 would be 3mm, that's close to a #7. 3mm is 3/32" if that helps to visualise the length on the Arcos. If you're only used to blades and combs in inches, the easiest thing is to throw the millimetre measurement into a converter on Google. 3mm - 3/32" 6mm - 1/4" 9mm - roughly 3/8" 12mm - roughly 1/2" So yes in this scenario your best option would be the 12mm to achieve the closest cut to what you're after. Guard and comb are the same thing, they're mostly called combs in the UK. :) Using combs in combination is actually really fun. A lot of groomers use one length on the body of the dog, then use a longer comb on their legs and/or top of head. Leaving the top of a dog's head longer makes their head stand out a little more, and leaving more hair gives you a bit more creative freedom with the rest of the face when you start styling. The 4CA and 5CA refer to the Wahl stainless steel comb attachment set that clips onto any A5 blade on standard clippers (like Heiniger Saphir, Wahl KM10, Andis Pulse ZR). A 4CA is 13mm (just over 1/2") and 5CA 16mm (5/8"). CA is just short of comb attachment. Hope this explains it all, if you have any more questions then ask away!

You shouldn't use a blade on a Chihuahua. Why are you looking to clip one?
