Learn the entire CST Wing Chun method Online: www.mindfulwin...
In the following video, Nima addresses one of the most common questions asked by people following the Chu Shong Tin Wing Chun system. He also discusses the importance of persistence in practice and shares his own experience during the times where his motivation was down...
*A note about this channel the lineage:
Sifu Nima King is the owner and team leader of Mindful Wing Chun, a CST Wing Chun school in Hong Kong with affiliations around the world. Mindful Wing Chun is wholeheartedly dedicated to passing on the internal wing chun method as passed down by Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin who was the longest serving student of Grandmaster Ip Man. Chu Shong Tin lived with Ip Man for 5 years (1950-1955) and was coined the title ' the king of siu nim tao' by his master Ip Man.
He was a legend in the world of Wing Chun (in particular the internal method of wing chun) and spent 64years passing it on full-time before he passed away in 2014. Nim King practiced under hin in Hong Kong for 9 years and established Mindful Wing Chun under CST's guidance. Nima is also on the board of Directors for the 'Chu Shong Tin Alumni' which is a group of senior students of CST that were hand picked by him to establish the Alumni and to uphold and continue his teachings and Wing Chun legacy after he passed away.
Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin was a very humble and low-key Wing Chun Master therefore its only after we began putting his videos online, that people started to hear about him. In fact, majority of the main Wing CHun teachers (of the Ip Man lineage) who began practice in the 50s and early 60s (apart of Leung Sheung and Lok Yiu) were trained by CST even-though they were Ip Man's students. This is due to CST being the most snr and main teacher of Ip Man's school in those days.
Nima was lucky to start his practice under CST in 2005 because that's when CST decided to change his teaching to all internal practice so that he can pass on "Nim Tao' and 'Nim Lik' (the mind power/energy cultivated through internal Wing Chun practice) to his students.
Nima, even though a non-chinese and much younger than the other students of CST, attained a high level of these final teachings. He now mainly teaches the seniors within this lineage and also travels around giving workshops and is working on an online program so that master CST's teaching can have a greater reach.

Thank you Nima. That was excellent. Knowing what Sigung was able to do sets the bar really high. After over a year and a half practicing every day, I’m seeing results. I do have a trading partner from another lineage who is very skilled. It’s very tough to have the right mindset under pressure and constant attack but slowly there is improvement. My Sifu from my youth always said that it takes a long time to build a mountain.

Sifu King, Mindful Wing Chun practitioners or anyone else that may know anything about other wing chun styles or practitioners other than your own; I would be eternally grateful if you could give any input on other styles or practitioners mainly mine under William Cheung! Whether or not Grand Master Cheung’s practice will yield internal stated results isn’t clear, because like many other wing chun styles or practitioners it’s never even discussed besides a book I have from William Cheung! My brother is a master instructor at a school he opened with a co worker and I’ve been exposed to wing chun for over 30yrs but I’m just now deeply into “internally” labeled or emphasized styles from studying and practicing my personal favorite which is Bagua! Once I learned of Mindful Wing Chun and others who emphasized this “internal aspect, I learned that there are differences but that internal quality or state is the same or in the least is highly similar! So specifically I’d really love to finally know if William Cheung’s sil lim tau which is in uniform with chum kiu and bil jee in the opening of the stance, whereas Mindful Wing Chun and others have that toe’s facing in then out thing instead of circle stepping into the stance like bil jee! Now if for some reason the Nim Tau state can’t be achieved because of that I’d really like to know why it’s not even in bil jee! I’m also pretty sure I’m not the only one who’d like some light shed on this subject! It’s really sad how different wing chun practitioners never get together to resolve these extremely pertinent issues.🤔🤷🏻🙄/✌️🤲☝️

Hey man, thanks for the detailed comment/question. To be very honest I have no experience in any other Wing Chun method in terms of spending time to practice them. I have however touched hands with pretty much every other Wing Chun lineage's practitioners both from Ip Man lineage and Mainland China. That is how I do may sharing with the other Wing Chun schools. In fact our Saturday classes here in HK are open to all Wing Chun schools and they come for a gathering to do chisau. its good fun. So I'm afraid I really can't (and it wouldn't be right to do so) comment on William Cheung's method as I've never practiced it. I can only comment and share my ideas from the CST / Mindful Wing CHun lineage and method of practice. I do recommend you check out our online school and try the 1-week free trial and in that you will get an insight into our method and Siu Nim Tao style :)

@@MindfulWingChun Thank you for your response! I understand that you can’t possibly comment on that which you haven’t practiced yourself, but surely you can make an informative opinion on what you’ve experienced from “touching hands” and sharing your ideas with what you said about the Wing Chun gatherings with people other than your own! You being a prominent, experienced and respectable figure in the Wing Chun world are an awesome asset that could very well fill the void of knowledge of differences and or similarities between the lineages, practitioners you’ve actually touched hands with and whatever styles that differ from your own! For instance, you said you’ve touched hands with many other Wing Chun practitioners other than Mindful Wing Chun, so PLEASE make a video on that showing the differences or similarities and your or their opinions also; especially those who may not emphasize on “internal” aspects at all so to in the least save people like me the trouble of possibly spending a lifetime in the wrong direction according to personal aspirations! ✌️🤲☝️

Hello Mindful Wing Chun! As I understand it, CST looked into Nima's eyes and could do mindful relaxation ("you can't do it... now you can do it"). I've seen your other videos when you show that he can "disconnect" his muscles. The question is, has Nima grown after CST passed away? Or was it before.

Hello Nima! I got confused by the description, I thought someone else managed the channel, sorry! In another video you said that CST once told you about him being able to lift two sacks of 30kilos ( or was it 50?) One with each arm and he pivoted his hips due to the volume of the sacks. How far have you pushed your limits? Is there such thing as a limits, once you start improving?
@MindfulWingChun
@MindfulWingChun 6 лет назад
It was 50kgs each side :) And at the moment, Im only putting it under pressure in sparring, ground fighting, performing the Long Pole Form, moving at maximum speed when hitting the floor to ceiling ball etc. To be very honest I dont feel I can retain a good enough relaxation level in the above let alone lifting very heavy weights like he did... All in good time :)

So do you think 31 is not too late to start and achieve high level? Everyone I read about always started when they were in their teens and are already masters by their 30's. Not just in whicn chun, but other stuff, too. Sometimes it is discouraging, especially in a system like wing chun where you have to really just keep trying and trying to get those results, as you just mentioned here.

31 is still very young! Martial arts like this type of Wing Chun and things like BJJ are very effective right into old ages of 80s and 90s. So you have 50years man and the sooner you get started the better :)

Yes, that is its main purpose (along with relaxing the lower back). there is no need to squeeze the knees inwards but rather point (focus) them forwards into the apex of the triangle. hope that hels

Why does it have to be sil lim Tao. After doing this for so long, do you ever think of improving the form to make it more efficient to get to your goals? I mean, the tai ji practitioners have different forms towards similar results, so you would think that there would be an evolution towards efficiency. Do you think that there is something so special about the form or is it just about keeping things organized so you don't have everyone doing their own forms. I am thinking that when you start, you want to find a very comfortable position that makes relaxing extremely easy. Everyone is different so I am thinking about having a few forms and let people choose the one that is easiest for them based on things like flexibility and body shape, etc to get to a relaxed state. Maybe the ones who relax into s'il lim Tao will obviously advance the fastest. Are you getting my point? I have been trying my own version of s'il lim Tao based on what is most relaxing for me personally. Once I get relaxed I slowly evolve into the strict version of the form. I wouldn't think it matters as long as you get to doing it correctly and why not get there in ways that are more efficient? It's not about being in a rush but the faster you get to the state you want, the faster you will be ready to fight. Eventually you want to be there all the time, right? I see it like changing your muscle memory or retraining your mind. Is your birth name Nima King? It is it short for something?
@MindfulWingChun
@MindfulWingChun 4 года назад
SNT is the form that enables one to tap into the Nim Tao state. Also because of the stance, centerline, and the structure of the movements you will be able to put the Nim Tao into application. The fact that the entire body is still apart from the arms means that its easier to retain the Stillness needed to gain the relaxation and eventually release the energy. Of course with the later forms we begin to move the body and then move at maximum speed but skipping SNT will mean that Nim Tao is not really achievable. This is why CST put such great emphasis on SNT. The form is perfect the way it is and there is no need to modify it in my opinion. It's not to do with fighting but rather cultivating the Nim TAo state hence why there is no need for modification. The applications can and should be modified as times change (i.e. to deal with grappling these days etc.) Nima is my birth name and King is surname that I chose myself :)

@MindfulWingChun

If standing upright with a very good and natural posture (neutral spine, pelvis etc.) then its probably 1 out of 10 in terms of the effort on contraction. But it's important to couple Taigung with simultaneously having intention flowing up your spine and relaxing the entire mid section. by itself and without the above mentioned, Taigung won't really have much of an effect

Nima King is one of the bests out there in the Wing Chun world. The Wing Chun skill does not come by the number of years you spend in someone's house. It comes from proper training. Power does not come from Chi Sao with a partner, but comes from 'Isolation'. Chi Sao is to test and verify that you've acquired skill to manipulate qi. What Nima is talking about is high-level Wing Chun that is experienced only by a few. In the high-level Wing Chun, you just 'think' and it happens. If you don't connect to what he is talking about, you are not there yet.

Well, it’s simple to answer this question really: “you are doing it right when the moves are slow and even.” Do not put any brute force into moves. Just move your arms “slow and even”. As long as as it’s “slow and even (speed)”, you are doing it correctly. There is nothing else to worry about. “Slow and even”. Really, there is nothing else to correctedness, no mindfulness or anything like that, nothing! Just slow and even! If you think of what you are doing, you are not doing it correctly. If you go fast in some sections and slow in some other sections, you are doing it incorrectly. If you try to use your spine, you are doing it incorrectly. If you are trying to relax, you are doing it incorrectly. Remember: slow and even!

hmmm, interesting approach to your training. I personally wouldn't recommend doing that In Siu Nim Tao as our aim in SNT is to attain a particular state in the body and mind requiring deep relaxation and openness of the joints. However in application (i.e. chisau, dummy, techniques and sparring) I actually do ask myself a similar question, but I dont try and put myself intoi a fear state and rather retain a very calm and relaxed state. I put myself under pressure to allow my state to be challenged through sparring both in Wing Chun and BJJ

In this case it does. Being able to move using Nim Tao means that there is power in the movements. Check out the main video on this channel where CST talks about the 3 stages of SNT which applies to all Wing Chun forms/techniques. Moving with the mind (Nim Tao) is the 2nd stage he talks about...
