Fantastic advice! My biggest problem has always been my keys, so after 30yrs of being late to pick up the kids or get to work or whatever I finally bought myself a giant lobster clasp & I *TRY* really really really hard to remember to clip my keys to the strap on my handbag & when I remember to actually do it I feel like I’ve achieved greatness!! Unfortunately tho, having put the clasp on my keys doesn’t actually mean I ALWAYS remember to clip them onto my bag.. it’s kinda like writing out your shopping list but either forgetting it or losing it or both & coming home with a car full of groceries, all your money is gone only to realise once you get home that you spent all your money on everything but the 4 items that were so essential you went to all the trouble to write a list for…

This explains my joy at finally having a label maker. Kind of reminds me of the physical activity of note taking as a method of recall/learning.

Hi Rick, Thanks for the motivational tips; Losing ‘stuff’ is the bane of my life!! which, sometimes when I’m trying to get into the car and leave the house, can drive me ‘almost’ (very nearly) to implosion. A few useful tips like this can really change a persons world. Sorry a can’t afford to become a patron (i live in the UK lol , enough said!) but please dont stop sharing . Hi Rick. You’re a treasure and I thank you. I was just released from an voluntary psychiatric stay at a major hospital on NYC. My mom, sis, nephew have been treated for ADHD. I slipped by, made a modestly successful career as an actor until it came crashing down. I brought my family history, thorough evidence of executive difficulties throughout life. My family history never made it into my chart, they stopped my current meds for anxiety (maybe good), adamantly diagnosed me with bipolar II (eh, maybe, definitely anxiety disorder), and gave me the ultimatum of taking an anti-psychotic or they’d send me packing. I packed and now my team is on the case to find better informed experts to see the whole picture. I’m still suffering, I’ve built lifelong strategies to cope, never abused or used stimulant medication. But I still have hope. Thank you, Rick. I’m sending you my love and gratitude through frustrated tears.
@joelripka
@joelripka 3 года назад
My family members found relief with stimulant medication but still lack the support systems and coping mechanisms and substance abuse and comorbidities are rampant and often I effectively addressed. We’re all learning more now thanks to my struggles and it’s bringing a once severed family back together to support each other. Blessings, Rick.
@joelripka
@joelripka 3 года назад
Hi Rick! I got a swift, double-verified second opinion of my diagnose. The initial diagnosis was found to be inaccurate according to these patient clinicians. Now diagnosed with ADHD combined type. I was prescribed my first dose of stimulant medication ever. I shared your trepidation but took the dose. I looked into my fiancé’s dazzling eyes, and we wept. We have a long road of putting in some real structure and modifications together. But I got my glasses today. I can see better. I really can. You will remain dear in my heart for the entire rest of my life and front row seats to any show I’m ever in when I return to the NYC stage. Blessings, Rick.

Place for everything that makes sense to me. Great advice better than,"put in the same place everytime." "Uh huh" right...a good example my purse, the one that has multiple pockets. Perfect right a place.for everything. NOPE because when I go to look for my valet ticket in my purse I forgot the perfect place from the day before and when I find it inevitably I will find another perfect place. The perfect place I will find first try everything, perfect place. Ha ha Living with other people. I FUCKING LOVE labels. Craft room, draws labled: Sharp things Sticky things Paper things

Placing a stylish, framed mirror with two large hooks on it, _where I could hang my keys as soon as I walked in the door_ , has literally changed my life for the better. :) I think Rick's on to something, with whatever holds your "important items" needing to be appealing to the eye, to work for us, knowing how many of us are attracted to (or distracted by) novelty. That way, it becomes a special place to put our things.

I just wanted you to know you helped me to recognize that something was wrong, and at the age of 52, after a month of seeing a psychologist, I was diagnosed with ADHD. Obviously I've had it my whole life and just "got by". They just started me on Adderall. On my first day, I took it in the morning and went out in the garage to work out. In an hour I came inside, very emotional, crying. My wife asked me what was wrong?.. What was it? It was quiet...Almost completely quiet. I'm talking more than audible sound waves. I'm talking about all that white noise constantly flittering around the edges of your attention, competing for your focus. They all got really really quiet...It's was scary quiet. For the first time in my life..

My ADHD son loves to clean up his room, he needs just some minutes, even if he played with everything in his room and it is all over the floor. It is so easy to maintain, he just have 5 categories of toys. My ADHD husband also like our easy to maintain house and that the things have a place. The one diagnosis criteria box that I didn't tick was 'do you often lose things?' and that's simply because my mum's neat and tidy mantra; "a place for everything and everything in its place" was drummed into me from a very young age. Keep things in the same place, where they always are, and you never have to look for them. However, do I forget to take things with me when I'm leaving the house, getting tools together for work, packing for a trip.... Oh yes, EVERY time. :(

I have special places where I keep a lot of the things that I use or need, but often, I fail to put them back where they belong. When I discover that something is missing and not where it's supposed to be, and I don't know where it is, I ask myself, "When and where did I have it last?" The answer is usually, "I had it LAST LAST NIGHT!" But I don't know where I had it last! Why? My mind was out there, when it needed to be HERE as I point to my hand. I feel that minimizing distractions and concentrating on the task at hand in everything I do is the key to avoid incidents of missplasure. As a general rule, I save music and TV for when I have time to sit down and relax, and don't have anything else to do. When I'm on my feet and going about things, I TURN MUSIC AND TV OFF! That's my effort to minimize distractions, and CONCENTRATE ON THE TASK AT HAND!!!!!!!!! I tell myself that the task at hand is as SERIOUS AS FLYING A COMMERCIAL AIRLINER!!! I need to keep my mind OFF OF AUTOPILOT, and in MANUAL FLIGHT! My conscious mind needs to do ALL OF THE WORK! My subconscious mind needs to TAKE A REST!!!!! When it's time to go about things, my subconscious mind is the thing I wish I could turn off along with music and TV. I wish I could switch off the subconscious mind like the autopilot in an aircraft. That would do two things for me! One, it would prevent my mind from producing distracting thoughts. Two, it would force my conscious mind to do ALL OF THE WORK!!!!!

If I ever.see u in person, im hugging u a squeezing ur cheeks, ao-k? Hahaha, yeah...I'm not going to do that (of course) unless a few different circumstances were to randomly , shift! I want get into it now. So, just know tht I appreciate u taking time to share ALL OF UR INFO/CONTENT with us! I am a lifer.😆😆 Recently diagnosed bcuz my 13 yr old just happened to ask the right question to her pediatrician. And, like any.good physician/#1mom would do,.... I butt in with my uber.experienced solution! Nobody asked for it- lucky them!!! I just volunteered it. So, in this scenario I did.not practice the Golden rule. Y? Lol! Bcuz a lot of times I hv.no restraint or boundaries. I know I'm just.spewing. but I do hv questions... Every time I start getting things donated or sold or trashed, I begin yet another organization attempt. And in tht process alone I notice tht perfectionism kicks.in and I then hv a BIGGER EFFING MESS but, even more disorganization happens bcuz I get distracted with the specific things or details of organizing 1 particular item or small area. Then I've completely forgotten the 1st thing I started,.along with my initial motivation. Thts another gross defect of.my adhd- 2 steps forward & organized and then sliding 4 back! Then the spiral of death. A really big reason I feel like I slip more than organize is due to my husband whom doesn't really take time to understand my way, adhd behavior and how he can be supportive. Tht truly causes my attention deficit to go into hypersensitive overdrive! Do u hv any videos or pointers on how to better get my partner to appreciate & respect AND, MOST IMPORTANTLY SUPPORT ME rather than shaming me & unnecessarily and unintentionally retraumatize me. Whew! I hop i kept ur attention and u understand what I'm saying . Thx again!

Isn't this method something most people do? I often feel like a "defective" ADHD-haver, because I don't often loose stuff, and then someone discusses this like it's a revelation, but I was raised doing this and kinda assumed that most people do this.

People who don’t have adhd don’t have to “have a place for everything” because they go “where’s my keys, oh I set them down over here” People with adhd thats undiagnosed, or who have parents who have it and never got treated for it usually grow up like this or learn it early, because they develop or are given coping mechanisms for their adhd symptoms. I have some awesome coping mechanisms. But I lose crap all the time. /:

HAHAHAHAHAHA NO. And that's the point. These methods seem so obvious to people who are naturally organized. But, just because you have ADHD, doesn't mean you're an automatic slob. I have a friend with ADHD and he's meticulously organized. I do think, tho, that many disorganized people have ADHD, diagnosed or not. And for those people, these methods are very helpful.

I've been trying to apply this for quite some time. The biggest problem is that what's a logical space today is not a logical space tomorrow. It's like my brain keeps resetting what feels right so it's always "suggesting" a new place to look. Labels makes a massive difference though in general, will try doing this as a temporary thing as well to see if that helps me remember the areas.

Rick, You Rock! Not officially, yet hinted at, according to the criteria, plus, taking a questionaire in counselling (for depression & anxiety)... looks like I have it too! Your vids more than others, especially helped me. At 60 yrs., I had the Mom listen to your Unoffical Test. She smiled, and nodded - it was nice, but not sure it made up for the shame that was laid upon me thru the years. Hey! This is a start, no matter if I feel it's overdue.... Thanks again!!! I Love your humor on the topic! That helps to no end!!!!!

When I saw the set of labels, my brain thought the first one on the top left-hand side said, "hitlers". What a weird thing to put in a draw. And not just one. Oh, "hiliters".

So I’m still a bit confused on how I locate the thing that I just had in my hand a few minutes ago. I get distracted, put the thing down without any real conscious memory of doing so...so finding it becomes a maddening challenge. I was hoping to learn how to switch on the required conscious memory so as to avoid the loss (and lost time). I do find myself often purposefully creating consciousness when I put something down...as long as I’m not distracted. I then repeat (ad nausea) the item’s location to firm it up in my brain (sometimes to the point it becomes an intrusive thought). Did I just answer my own question? I don’t know. I just know the frustration is daily, multiple times each day, and regulating the accompanying frustration is a massive challenge.

I now have Rules for myself. Finally I realised that some things, like car keys, have to go in the same place all the time because it makes life so much easier. So my "Rules" are completely internal (I live on my own, so that helps) and as soon as I walk through the front door the keys go back on their hook, which is actually the thing the safety chain is held in, but it's far more useful being my keys' special place. Whether I keep these Rules because I know how much anxiety and frustration *not* keeping them brings, and I'm terrified of that, or because I've now not lost my car keys (in a serious way) in more than, oh, about 15 years I suppose, and I've learned how lovely it is always to know exactly where my car keys are, I'm not sure. A bit of both, probably. These Rules have come entirely from within me: I have decided that x y z is the Rule, and I follow it because I want to. If I'm out, and the keys can't go in the door, then the next default place is my right hand coat pocket; if I'm not wearing a coat then I'm probably at my fella's house so the keys will be on the coffee table. They can be in only one of these three places, or, as the ultimate last resort, they'll be in my handbag, but they always fall to the bottom and are (deliberately, if you ask me, grrr!) difficult to get hold of, so I try not to put them there. This makes life so much easier and calmer and less adrenline-fuelled; it's been a long journey but now I have given certain things a place to be in and they are *always* put in that place. Woe betide my (adult) children if they don't put one of these designated items back in its designated place! So what I'm saying, is if You can come up with a few "Rules" that you need to implement, about specific situations or objects that currently cause you grief, and that seem eminently sensible to You, go ahead and start using them. Tweak things until the system works for you. It's very satisfying when it works, because you got something Right at long last, you're not wasting energy and time hunting for stuff, and you know exactly where to find x y z or car keys. You have the power of choice! I hope this helps; onwards and upwards! Katherine from Kent 💐

So. The only item that defeats this system is my glasses. I take them off without being conscious of it. I am very, very near-sighted. Cannot drive without them, cannot watch TV without them, cannot see across the room or yard without them. But in order to see anything close than about three feet, I have to take them off. And--before you say it--bifocals suck. I'd rather live in a blurry world. I have "safe" places I put them. At the end of the day, I generally leave them on my desk at the base of my computer. It looks like the computer is wearing them and this helps for some weird reason. In the middle of the day, if I sit down to read in the living room--I put them on an end table where my cell phone and kindle live (Oddly, I rarely lose my phone or kindle). The rest of the day? Doing dishes, working in the garden, cleaning the bathroom... Your guess is as good as mine. I've left glasses hanging on tomato cages, stuck in the top of flower pots, dangling from the fence, resting on tree trunks... One pair went into the burn pile during fall clean up one year. The only good part of getting older and blinder is that I take them off less often. They need to make tiny sensors for glasses that you can track with your phone or by saying some obscure word or whistling a tune.

I’d suggest a cord to hang them around your neck, tuck them on your head like the cool kids do with sunglasses, or maybe get or make something you can add to your clothes a Velcro on loop or pocket so you can just tuck them in there. If they’re attached to you it’s kind of like the pen on a chain. Harder to get lost. 😂

I'm not very organized with paperwork, I lose school papers, prescriptions, etc. but I have very specific places for my hairbrush, my purse, my notebook that I need to function and be a mom. Thankyou!

I worked in manufacturing for a while and they're big on "5S". The bureaucrats take it too far and treat it like an opportunity to become police doling out punishments for not having a tape boarder around where your keyboard usually is. But it is, otherwise, an incredibly valuable way of thinking to use in every day life: Have a place that everything lives. My keys are either in my left trouser pocket, or on my bed side table. No other option. I would lose everything without a 5S mindset.

I find that works for me most of the time... till my 3 year old rearranges the house. One thing that has helped me massively is putting a little “orbit” on my glasses and a “tile” on my keys. I also have a cord on my keys so I don’t leave them in the front door.
