Cast iron.

They were compressed end to end then ground on the lathe, then the interior was cut. So they should be round. Huge rings though. No heat treatment. Love the cloth ring expander the old man uses.

@@lzed223 All that machining after grinding, they are not going to be round. Sure they will be roundish, but there are better ways to finish grind rings. Of course if you don't have the right machine you have to make do.

@@stusue9733 Please inform me. When they make the cut into the ring it goes out of round. But using their ring compressor and placing it into the jig to hold the rings and grinding this should create a round circumference on the outside. Then by cutting the interior circumference shouldn't that give you two concentric circles? Where does it go off the rails? Yes they seem to make things out of dirt over there.

@@lzed223 Metals aren't perfectly homogeneous, so any machining after they have been ground is not going to be perfectly symmetrical. Even grinding them round as the last operation requires a special fixture and machine to make sure they are round. Unlike pistons that should be ground oval and tapered.

@@lzed223 Perhaps I should also add, its not just about them being round but also having even tension against the bore all the way around when fitted.
