How Do Spacecrafts Avoid Space Junk?

There is actually a ton of space junk that orbits the earth. NASA, The Space Force and the Space Surveillance Network keeps track of every piece large enough to be detected. But even the smallest pieces still impose a threat since they move at high velocities.

Space junk is not as much of an issue as people make it out to be. 23,000 items the size of a softball seems like a lot until you imagine how much space 23,000 softballs would cover on the surface of the Earth. Now expand the radius of the Earth 100 miles and you would have roughly one softball for every 2 square miles. It gets even more complex than that because of the different heights of orbits, 100 miles above the earth would be the minimum to reach space.
@Thesamurai1999
@Thesamurai1999 Год назад
Yes, but it ahouldn’t be ignored as it’s a growing problem. Also there are more than 23 000 items. Way more. But 23 000 of them were the size of soft balls.

Dont forget, they travels 17,500 mph, so even each junk seperate 2 square miles but they travel so fast, still very dangerous
@jherd7909
@jherd7909 Год назад
I agree with this assessment. Not only are impacts rare, but the orbits themselves of the space junk change (mainly in LEO; low earth orbit). Don't get me wrong, it can still be a very dangerous hazard, but the likely hood of a major impact is next to nothing, especially with entire departments in multiple countries watching space 24/7.

Everyone worrying about this: Don’t worry, a company called Astroscale is dedicated to picking up space junk so other space missions aren’t impacted by debris! The CTO of the company came to talk at my school and he explained how their satellites work. Once they detect pieces big enough to be picked up, they bring it back to the Earth’s atmosphere to be burned up, and the best thing is, it doesn’t pollute the Earth! It should be noted that those 17_500 mph are orbital velocities. That's not to say space junk doesn't fly that fast, but it means that speeds relative to a potential spacecraft can be all over the place. For example: If the craft happens to have the exact orbit of a piece, their relative speed will be 0. On the other hand, if they have opposing orbits, where the directions are inverted, a potebtial collision would logically have a relative velocity of 35_000 mph. TL;DR: Orbital speeds are weird and relative speed to a piece of space junk can vary wildly.

actaully, 17000 isnt as bad as you think, most sattelites with similar orbits will have similar speeds because a certain speed is required for an object to orbit, meaning 2 objects will have a small relative velocity. If an object has a speed of 50 meters a second in X direction and hits an object infront of it going 49 meters a second in that same X direction, the collision would be the same as a 1 meter per second collision

There really needs to be a company that is able to clean up space and recycle all the space junk and be able to resell it for like other goods or something as their main source of income. I would think that would be pretty useful to do.
