There are more permanently empty houses than their are homeless people due to this speculation. England may not be as bad as the US (but it's getting there), but there are 36 permanently empty homes in the US for *every* homeless person, and 25% of all single unit homes are owned by Investment funds. Under investment in low cost housing is a major problem in both the US and in England, especially after almost 2 decades of Tory rule.

While having zero sympathy for the rioters, I am starting to feel a bit uncomfortable at the show trials going on. A fortnight ago there was a consensus among the liberal elite establishment that prisons were overcrowded, not fit for purpose and did not work as a deterrent to crime ... and now we are here where 600 prison places are conjured up and people are being sentenced to 16 months for throwing an egg at a police officer in Hartlepool. The court system was supposedly on the point of breakdown with delays to cases, yet hundreds of rioters are fast tracked through courts and in prison within days. While much of the rioting was definitely hooliganism rather than any political expression, the utterly lazy repetition and labelling of everyone as "right wing" is depressing. Most of the rioters come from an underclass that has absolutely no representation or hope - they may even have voted as urged to do but end up with a government with a massive majority of seats yet 67% of those who bothered to vote did not vote for them, the political establishment have made democracy an irrelevance to many which is why there was the lowest turnout since 1885. The political and judicial response has definitely taken on an element of political revenge against a group of people those in power do not like. The sentences are definitely politically motivated and similar actions by other groups and in different circumstances would not be anything like as severe. The masters are teaching the mob a lesson. Throughout history those in power have feared the mob, from ancient Rome to the present day. But perhaps the saddest thing is the white liberal left wing middle class, often living in wealthy white enclaves, pillorying the white working class underclass. The number of mocking photos and memes selecting protesters who look scruffy or who have few teeth, or who shop at Greggs and Primark, is depressing. And, I am sorry to say it, but the use of the word "gammon" to describe poor working class nationalist white people is out and out racist - you might disagree but that it what it is, a critical generalisation of a group of a people you don't like on the grounds solely of their race. The demonisation of the working class has been ongoing, but is ironically reaching its peak under a Labour government. The actions of a few thousand moronic people, most carried away by the agitation of cowardly online fascists, has provided the government with a brilliant diversion from their odious policies such as taking money off pensioners for heating, building on green belt land, cutting services and infrastructure projects etc. And they have barely started. And, boy, have Starmer and his cadre cohorts exploited that by whipping up fear of the mob. It is also a very convenient excuse to ignore the genuine concerns about immigration and over population which will now be left unchecked because anyone who dares mention it will be labelled a racist. This has baffled me. One of my neighbours challenged my display of a Palestine flag in my car window, saying he was an English Patriot. He wasn't able to to link how the the two were in opposition and appeared to have been indoctrinated somehow. I asked him to look up the activities of the Irgun and the Stern Gang.
