That ice had minimal chance of breaking (to the point of them completely falling in) given how thick it appears. When given the chance, people in Minnesota like to skate on the "wild ice" of frozen lakes. In fact I guess this year was particularly good in conditions to do exactly that.
@@SueChicago Saaaaammmmme. I literally did so alone because I was like 8 at the time and I was a very foolish kid. I could swim, but I couldn’t get a hold of the ice. My parents found like 5 minutes later and I nearly got hypothermia due me having a genetic hot and cold indifference. It basically means that while I can process coldness and heat, I can’t feel it. I can’t warm up using artificial heat or cool off in it either. I need the temperature to change outside or I could get hypothermia or heatstroke.
OMG, this is the coolest video ever! I knew about turtles breaking through their butts, but I didn't know about them being able to survive in anaerobic environments and their ability to break down lactic acid!!!!
Your husband needs to have a discussion with mine so I can get one also. But apparently we "have no room" and yet he constantly discussed a bigger fish tank 😂
@@jordannahgalea9506 lol we live in a small apartment and this man wants ontop of a dog and snake an ant farm fish mice and hamsters like LOL NO WE DONT HAVE ROOM
Emily - the "mom" in me feels the need to remind you: Put on some form of boots with tread, so you don't slip on the freakin' ice! Love you guys and don't want you cracking your head or backside on that hard, cold surface.
I love that Emily gets mad when Ed says "it's through their butts" She really wanted to say that XD Edit: OMG WHAT THE HECK HOW DID I GET THIS MANY LIKES?? if only that was my sub count jk BUT SERIOUSLY THANK YALL WOW!! Edit 2: GUYS OMG WOW how am i getting this many likes on this comment this is the most I've ever had
Thank you Emily and Ed for teaching me how (some types) turtles hibernate! I already did know turtles hibernated(being an animal nerd) but, never know how. Thank you so much or educating 10000's of people learn every-time you post a video! Thank you so much!!!
Love your channel you guys got me interested in exotic reptiles and now I have a red-footed tortoise and I'm planning on breeding lots of different species of geckos
Hiiii I love your vids so muchhh!! You take such good care of your animals! Thank you for teacher people all over about these fascinating animals! Again, love your vids!
I'm so jealous of where you live! That's a perfect site to go ice skating! (I'm Dutch, we haven't had a decent cold winter in years, and I miss ice skating :') )
This looks so dangerous being out on the ice. I was scared for you guys! Our bodies of water don’t freeze like that in southern Oklahoma. Thank you for the amazing video 😍
Now I wanna find a frozen lake in the middle of summer in a tropical country just because that looks beautiful!! Nice shots 😍 Lots of love from Brazil 💜💜
Hi although you might or probably won’t see this I just want to say that you really convinced me how amazing and interesting reptiles can be and that I think what you do is so cool as I am currently trying to convince my mum that not all snakes and reptiles are terrifying
"they breathe through a whole different way" "it's through their butts!" then i suppose you could say it's a *hole* different way..... yes bad pun i am aware
Emily and Ed, I LOVE your channel and for the longest time I thought that there was only things like king cobras bu then I started to watch your channel and it opened the gates to the world of reptiles for me.I was always an animal lover and you told me facts that also made my mom who used to be afraid of snakes not be afraid of them anymore. I hope your channel grows to tell people about awesome reptiles all around the world. Please keep moving and I hope doing this is what you love. I always wished one day that I could be like you. :)
Hearing about turtles intaking and filtering oxygen through their butts just reminded me of the family that survived like a month stranded at sea by doing salt water enemas, since your bowels can filter out the salt while absorbing the fresh water.
I've been watching your chanel for years and years and i am amazed at how you keep suprizing us with new informations all the time!!! I thought i knew plenty on turtle but i realised now that I didnt xD thanks Em and Ed!!
It's incredible that some reptiles seem to not feel the cold. They seem so casual and not bothered by it. I mean sure, their metabolisms slow fown and all, but it's like they don't even feel the cold.
This was a fascinating video, but my dumb SoCal butt kept marveling over the fact that there were FROZEN BUBBLES IN THE LAKE. Also what a GORGEOUS coyote that was!
I didn’t even think about turtles burmating (I’m Aussie so most of the turtles are hecking big sea turtles who don’t rly like to go near ice) this is fascinating thanks Em :)
At 1:49 and 3:32 beside the snapper’s head to the left you can see a red eard slider same at 1:56 but it’s to the right of the head! (Btw I haven watched the rest of the video yet)
So, something that might be nice if you do things where you are having the viewers look for something, when you show where it is you should edit a line/ outline of whst youre showing (like an outline of a turtle through the Ice, or the fully covered seam between two sand-painted pannels)!! It helps alot with actually seeing thing and understanding what we are looking at!
I live in southern wisconsin (one of the suberbs of milwaukee) and there is a lil creek near my house that has all these bugs but there are also turtles. I havent seen fish down there as I just normally visit at night to clear my head. I always wondered how they survived winter
😮 walking... on an ice covered lake... HWAT!! I know it happens all the time but I live in an area where I never even see snow or any form of outside ice, so this is just WOW!! I need to do that one day
I was just wondering how turtles brumate this morning. (box turtles specifically, but learning about water turtles is fun too!) Its like this video was destined to come out today!
Wow that's cool had no idea that's how turtles hibernated I figured they burried themselves in the dirt and then came up in the summer cause I've found several big snappers that had huge clumps of dirt on there back right around spring and summer
I just want you to know Emily and Ed i love your videos so much and they give me so much motivation when doing anything and we even got three Long neck turtles named Kooper (bowser kooper) ugway the kung fu panda) and Martin (doc Martin)
I always thought they pulled out of the water and went into burrows. We have a pond at my school with a bunch of turtles in it and there are huge burrows they have dug around the edges so I always figured they went in there. It never freezes over here in Texas though :D
I'd heard Wickens Wicked Reptile mention turtle's butt breathing xD. It's really cool to be able to witness them brumating under the ice! Must have been quite an experience!
At the start of my school year, we went on a walk on the riverside next to the cemetery. And one time, we saw a huge common snapper! It’s the first time I saw a wild one! And I bet we were lucky! (I live in Quebec Canada) It was huge! I think It was an adult female since the tail was short and stocky. And, I can agree, reptiles in the north can survive. In November we saw two little Garter snakes under the metal grill stairs at our school. I don’t know if it was the same one but I think one was bigger.
I have a red ear slider and when I first got her, during the winter months she didn't eat at all and I was so scared cause she was pretty little but my mom said not to worry and that they hibernate, which was crazy to me cause I never knew that. and oh my god my turtle breaths through her butt!!!
