How do unschoolers learn anything?!

There is a misconception that parents who want to unschool their kids need to let their kids decide everything about their daily life themselves.
This is false. Unschooling has nothing to do with your parenting responsibilities.
Unschooling is the exact opposite of the traditional school system model.
As an unschooling parent, you facilitate learning with them. Give them access to good books, have good discussions with them, and give them a variety of experiences.

I have seen the most brilliant unschooled kids, and I have seen children highly neglected whose parents claim to “unschool” it’s actually a problem

@@SunnyOnTheInside I never said I saw neglect or abuse in the unschooling community, the OP did. Are you a part of the unschooling community? Do you witness neglect and abuse? I have never personally witnessed neglect or abuse in my local community. If I did, of course I would report it.

@@BethPavlik if you aren't seeing it you're not looking. Yes I've unschooled for many years. None of the abuse I see falls into categories that have legal avenues to stop it unfortunately.

I’m pretty sure those parents would be neglectful whether they were unschooling, “regular“ homeschooling, or sent their kids to school.

Yes! I love this distinction. So often when I hear people argue against unschooling, what they’re actually debating are issues of parenting. Parenting and schooling are different categories, even though with homeschooling they can be very closely connected. Loving your videos on this ❤

How can I apply to be unschooled?
@woaken
@woaken 6 месяцев назад
@@gamertag5030 are you a minor? You need to have your parents sign up to an Unschooling “School” that’s registered with the state. For example “Florida Unschoolers” has an enrollment form that allows your parents to legally register you under a school that is based in unschooling. There’s nothing more to do after that, your education is up to you and your parents after that point! What I would do is look up “Unschooling Enrollment *insert state*” to get started in your state

Unschooling doesn't mean you don't educate your children. So many people think that. I got bullied out of an "unschool group" because I shared about ways I intentionally taught my kids things that they asked to learn. This is why I dont use the term unschool anymore. It used to mean an education philosophy unlike public school. Now its apparently a fancy word for not being an active parent or guide in your child's education to too many people. So I've given up on these labels and just tell people that my children are educated at home, it looks nothing like public school and their educations speak for themselves.

Seems like everyone has a different definition of unschooling... to some it’s just learn through life, to others it’s letting the kids pick the subjects but still having dedicated time on actively teaching them. It’s hard when the definitions vary so much.
@BethPavlik
@BethPavlik Год назад
The truth is, every family is going to make unschooling work best for their family, so it’s normal that it looks slightly different for each of them. You can still give your kids freedom and also choose some things to present to them based on their interests.

I read a comment on another channel from an 18 year old who was unscheduled. She said it put her at a huge disadvantage to her peers who went to a regular school. She said she found she was completely ignorant about many subjects that her peers had learned at school. Home schooling is fine but you still have to actually teach the kids. You can't just rely on the kids learning through life. The advantage of home schooling is that you can teach each child in a way that they can understand but you still have to teach them proper lessons.

I don’t educate new homeschoolers to have no schedule whatsoever or to not teach their kids anything. You must be new to my channel. I’m curious, do you homeschool?

So you read one bad comment about unschooling on a video that is the broad paintbrush your using for your argument against unschooling? Good thing ive taught my unschooling children how to critically think because that is the most ridiculous thing ive read today

Do you realize there are kids who graduate from a public school system and they still can’t read or do basic math? They aren’t prepared for life despite being ‘educated’? This lack of preparation can happen under any kind of education and it largely falls to the parents. A parent should know where their child is with skills. And work to supplement if they are lacking.
@nope_n0pe

So weird. It’s almost like any kid, no matter how educated, can grown up with no guidance and get to adulthood with no clue. I was one and I attended public school my whole life. Now, as a parent, I’m teaching distinct skills and having the conversations I didn’t get. And none of it was anything taught from curriculum.

I watched a video on the research they have done into public school, structured homeschool and unstructured homeschool. The unstructured homeschool children were at an educational disadvantage, the public school were next up and the ones who were excelling by a large margin were structured homeschoolers. The researchers were pro-public school so they weren't even biased toward homeschool. The statistics were hugely in favour of structured homeschool

If unschooling means letting a child learn what they want I totally agree I actually do go to school but I have to stay up all night bc I’m currently teaching myself 2 languages, math, writing, guitar, grammar, literature, social studies, and much more and I don’t mean studying TvT As you can tell grammar class ain’t going well

Would you have these capabilities without a basic education? How do you know how to READ books? How do you know how to WRITE notes? How do you know what is nonsense vs CRITICAL INFORMATION? These are all things we learned in school and people are so busy playing victim of everything so they can complain and have a voice as well they forgot they could not form the sentences needed to protest without a basic education! Victim mentality attracted to this mindset in my opinion.

What makes sense to me is that for centuries children learned at home by just being included in family life and it was natural and it worked. As close as one can resemble that natural process within their means, the better. BUT ALSO, family life looks very different today. Unless you own your own business or run a homestead, you can't involve your child in your work/trade. Gaps must be filled. Homeschooling in any form is better than public school, but if all they're learning is how to rely on the rest of the world to meet their needs without contributing anything, that's a problem.

Yeah I've been stressing about schooling my kids and am I teaching them enough. I "get them" to do some maths and English but more often than not I'll just let them do their own thing, I've taught my girls to Crochet so they'll often be doing that or they'll be drawing, my son loves the piano and the Rubik's cube so he plays with that.... I quizzed him this morning asking who invented it and when, where they were from ECT and was pleasantly surprised at his knowledge base, so it seems I've been semi unschooling them anyway!! 😂❤ thank you for the clarification and ideas for how to encourage the self learning, I now have lots of ideas of how to teach them, so thank you.❤

There’s so much wrong information circulating about unschooling, from in and outside the homeschooling community. Unschooling isn’t about NOT teaching your kids; it’s about teaching them to how to love learning.

I’m homeschool my kids right now, but feel like I need to unschool them? So my bigger fear is they won’t learn math or spelling. I have a 10 year old and 15 year old with dyslexia so how would it work to teach them spelling? How do I tech grade 4 math and high school math through play?

I see that in the home school groups a lot. Some ppl just throw out parenting. 🤦‍♀️ I have 2 rules. Learn something new 3 days a wk and spend about 3hrs on it. That's all I ask. She can decide what she wants to learn, just learn something, then she can play video games or whatever. I'm really lucky, my daughter is really responsible and self-motivated. My son was a fight every day. I wish I had known about unschooling when he was a kid. We were doing online school, and it wasn't any different than traditional school, which he hated. Unschooling could have saved us both a lot of grief.

It should be called “Life University” 🫶🏼 by the way I am a bedridden mom and my son learned to read by himself. I teach him “life university” all day from bed and I make sure at the end of the day he tells me 3 things he learned and 3 that he is grateful. He is my little genius ( that’s what I tell him), he is an editor, learning animation by himself (8 years old) and I refuse to feel weird about our lifestyle. He is compassionate due to my health issues and how my husband treats me❤ this channel is the reassurance I needed to keep going this way. Thank you so much for this channel 😊 it is 💎🙏🏼

There is unschooling, and then there is not schooling. 😂 My kiddo does actually require some of the structure of more formal lessons, but can get done what he needs to in under 30 minutes per day. He's autistic and was having horrible meltdowns at school, he has a bruise from months ago when he was there that still has not gone away. He was getting stress induced tummy upsets and migraines, he's come home and hide in his room in the dark the entire time until morning. So now I'm taking him back out our stuff is going to be really loose. Forest play once a week, library visit once a week, and my middle kiddo still goes to school so we'll be around people then too, other than that we'll be free to do do things within his own time and ability. I hate when people think of homeschooling as just letting the kid do nothing. :(
