How Do We Handle the Level of Hate that Came with Caitlin Clark?

Real question as a non-sports person and truly not a basketball follower. Did the visibility increase because of Caitlin Clark, or were people following the controversy between her and Angel hoping one or other side would not make it? It just doesn't feel like the increase is true fans but more hateful people looking for a downfall or an outlet for their hate.

I've been a season ticket holder for the Minnesota Lynx and Phoenix Mercury for over 10 years and the game has been exciting much longer than this past season. We don't need fans like that in the game.

The irony is many of her “new” fans aren’t truly fans of the WNBA. They are folks that want to own the gays, the blacks, etc. and use Clark to prove their point on superiority. Clark is stellar! The drama and micro aggressions from those folks isn’t cool.

It's sickening how much pressure is put on this young girl all she wants to do is play ball but everybody has to have the racial card thrown in the middle it's sickening why can't we just enjoy the game which I love all the teams and instead of hatred being out there be thankful that somebody noticed the little white girl and now the WNBA is making millions

I love CC but what she brought to the game was maga hate…. I have never seen this type hate.. I've been a fan since 1997 (I even have the Lobo look-alike Barbie)and yes, CC added $$ to merchandise sales; also more TV coverage. However, she has to grow, like rookies must do (shoot even Kobe had to grow). People just need to enjoy the game, learn it & it's history and encourage the players to continue to do their best.

Clark IS the WNBA's version of Larry Bird so don't get it twisted. Clark took her college team to NCAA finals almost singlehandedly like Bird. Clark's skills were questioned just like Bird's skills. Well they both took their non-playoff teams to the playoffs their rookie years, both won Rookie of the Year and both were 4th in MVP voting. To add Clark tied, broke or set 62 WNBA records, please name any WNBA player ever doing that in their rookie year. Clark cannot control knuckleheads and she has been forceful in her repudiation of those knuckleheads takes. In my opinion these players need to stay off social media or don't read the comments. I am not a star of anything and I have gotten my share of threatening emails trying to extort money from me. I remember sitting in Madison Square Garden watching my Celtics play the Knicks and hearing almost the entire Garden calling Bird, "Bird Shit" and "White Trash" (in deference to him being the Hick from French Lick). So these women in the WNBA are for the first time being exposed to the full fandome of sports in the USA and all its warts. Note I am an African/Black man whose politics are more militant than any of those African/Black women in the WNBA.

Clark should speak up for her team members n make a public statement that it’s unacceptable. Let’s be honest she isn’t going to do that it will hurt her fan base. Maga loves her

Caitlin Clark's problem right now is she doesn't fully distinguish herself from what she's supposedly calling out. She says basically to keep positive and focus on the good narratives of the WNBA. She can do that but Angel, DiJonai and others in the league can't. This actually effects them and the fact that it's being done in her name....her response to this highly deficient. She has a lot of spark and attitude on the court. Where are those characteristics when it comes to this?

Racism was there before CC came into the league. CC hasn't even built enough equity in the pros to give credence to anything she could say. I think framing this only through race discounts the other external environmental factors. Honestly I think the large part of attention really started from the fact college players have NIL deals and can be advertised outside of the colleges control. Caitlin, Juju, Angel were bigger than their program. This change is now bringing crossover fans from college to WNBA. But I do recognize when there is an opportunity to racialize something from profit that will occur regardless of the players participating in it or not. Bird/magic is an example. I think eventually this will subside and die but Caitlin is getting lebron level attention with expectations while not being the absolute best player in the league does create an issue.

I had no idea who CC or Angel were until the 2023 college championship game. My husband is a LSU fan. I started following Angel's career after seeing the hate she received after beating Iowa. I noticed the nasty comments from CC fans were bad then but after the 2024 draft her fans took the hate, homophobia and racism to another level by extending their nasty comments to all Black WNBA players. I admit I have seen a few nasty comments directed at CC but they are usually in response to a CC fan's nasty comment. Critiquing a players performance on the court is fair game but attacking a player's personal appearance, hair, nails, makeup, se#ual preference, etc. is going too far. The worst CC fans are men ..which is really a surprise.

Remember, before Paige Bueckers got hurt and injuries, she was promoted and hyped up in women’s basketball 24/7 times more than CC. What is going to be the narrative when she makes her way to the WNBA next year?

We gave our share of hate in the Caitlin Clark saga too. She didn’t deserve it. To her credit, and Tyler pointed it out, Clark respected her place as a star still new to the league while lifting the sport. The public and social media madness went to stupid levels. Reese endured the hate too. It was problematic. Reese and Clark handled it as well as you can expect someone that age to deal. That said, the perceived rivalry will benefit the league. As good as those two are though, they are not yet the best players in the league.

What about Kelsey Plum, Breanna Stewart, and Ticha Penichiro

First love your show! I think the problem I see is there are more new WNBA fans than existing fans. The existing fans talk about the league way different than say NBA existing fans. In the NBA because some new fan love say Anthony Edwards and swear he’s the best thing since sliced bread, you don’t have to pay homage to great players before him. We don’t get riled up because no matter what he has done in 3 years he ain’t no where near the best ever yet. NBA establishment ignores that noise. WNBA doesn’t. Aja Wilson is Tim Duncan. Tim outside the players and coaches never had got the fans love and hype as say Allen Iverson. One is the most fundamental player of his generation I.e Ms Wilson. And Tim has 5 titles.
