How do wind turbines work? - Rebecca J. Barthelmie and Sara C. Pryor

Explore how wind turbines convert wind into electricity, and the challenges of powering the world entirely with wind energy.
--
Every 24 hours, wind generates enough kinetic energy to produce roughly 35 times more electricity than humanity uses each day. And unlike coal or oil, this resource is totally renewed each day. So how can we harness this incredible amount of energy, and is it possible to create a world powered entirely by wind? Rebecca Barthelmie and Sara Pryor dig into the science of wind turbine technology.

Part of it at least is the obsession with temperature control. Most homes in Europe straight up dont have ac's Then the fridges and ovens tend to be smaller. Essentially its alot of small differences that add up to a large difference.

And/or they are half as effectively using electricity as European homes. For example: Low quality American homes with high square footage and volume attempting to regulate temperatures because the homes are not well-insulated, which requires a lot of electricity.

People don’t realize how big a wind turbine is until they see a 200 foot blade pass them on the highway. Canada has a lot of them and they are still being built in southern Ontario but there’s sadly a lot of controversy against them from being a sore sight to people having headaches from them.

Great explanation of the lift force that's generated from different blade designs. From my limited knowledge of these from only two classes in college (24m) covering them, I never made the connection (or professors never made the connection for me well enough) between translational wind movement and rotational rotor movement. This visualization cleared it up pretty well!

This video does little to really cover wind generation, it's practical difficulties in using it to supply a grid and the very real intermittency problem. In the U.K, since the 9th April to date there has hardly been any wind generated power fed into the grid for example. At 4:18 it makes the frequently stated view that it is cheap, it is quite the opposite it is very expensive due to the cost of accomodating it's technically unsuited power and the very large subsidies. Power the world entirely with wind, not a chance, it is completely unfeasible.
